  1. So are you implying there is a prize for who finds the most geocaches? Surely you aren't trying to move this thread into a discussion about numbers.... If it isn't about the numbers, and numbers don't matter, then it shouldn't matter who logs what because in the end there is no giant chocolate bunny.
  2. Sounds like a prime example of Stanley Fish's concept of interpretive communities. In brief, it could be argued that because geocachers generally interprete the rules to mean that logging your own cache is a no-no, that interpretation carries weight even if the rules do not clearly state it. In other words, the collective interpretation of the rules brings truth.
  3. Not at all... The question deals more with what is it that gets us so bent out of shape. It seems like a legitimate conclusion to see logging your own cache as an acceptable practice.
  4. So I was thinking. It seems to be the general concensus here in the forums that logging your own cache as a find is considered a no-no. Of course there is that situation where a cache is adopted where we generally consider logging a cache you own as acceptable. What is the big deal with logging your own cache anyway? When I first started caching, way before I visited the forums (ahh... the days of niavity!), I had no idea it was considered unacceptable. There is nothing on the site that discourages it (the site actually allows it). In my humble opinion, if it weren't for the harsh, clearly defined, legalistic attitude of these forums, I would see no problem with it. In fact, I logged my first hidden cache as a find but have subsequently deleted the log. Why are those of us in the forums so adamently against this? This practice seems much more open to speculation than say something like multiple logs on the same cache, or pocket caches, or fake logs or...
  5. I seem to remember a thread like this several months ago. If I remember correctly there was a cache in Tennessee that set the record. I do know that I know Grand High Pobah's cacherstats.com utilizes logs from the most found caches. That might be a resource to help answer the question.
  6. Call me a cynic (note my sig line), but I can't think of anything else on topic that can be said.
  7. likewise, "found the most" shows up as: Again, this seems very important in light of previous discussions.
  8. A google image search yeilds this as the top image when you search for "most finds" I don't know what it means, but it certainly must be important.
  9. Here is the quick reply in hopes of warding off another closed thread. http://www.cacherstats.com/Rank1-125.html lists the top found logs. There is however debate (rightly or wrongly) on the standard used in those logs. There is always debate on this. Just check out the last page or two of topic. PS. this is a hot topic which always causes debate. you may want to familarize yourself with the forum search option.
  10. Hmm... that is a good question.... I wonder if anyone in the forums has an answer or opinion on the matter.
  11. That means in WI, a person could steal my car and my wife's car and it still be considered a misdemeaner!!
  12. Actually, I would disagree with you Baloo. Student Activities would probably be over all things related to events on campus. I have found the best place to go is the person for whom saying yes is easiest. For instance, when I talked to the KY Department of Transportation, I talked to the Publicity person and not the head engineer or the safety guy. I got a quick yes from an official source. Likewise, the Student Activities person is all about things happening on campus. I am sure it would be very easy for him to say yes and it would come from an official source.
  13. Yeah, I don't care for it either. I think it makes us sound corny when we are talking with non-geocachers (or even amongst ourselves).
  14. I have generally been successful (lucky) in getting permission. I have found if you play to their egos and and offer a good explanation it tends to work. Also, knowing the people to contact is essential. Sometimes the best permission comes from the lowest rung on the totem pole, sometimes from the highest. For instance, I talked to the events coordinator at the Corvette Museum and he was stoked about placing one - I just told him how it could improve traffic. I also talked to the people at the RC airport here and stroked their ego about how it would get them good exposure. Both times it worked out. Also, I have even talked to the KY Horse Park and the KY DOT and all have been super helpful. In most cases email worked best because you can start by asking if they are the right person to talk to - that avoids a premature no. Also, you can fully describe what you want and how it benefits them. Just some thoughts. [edit to clarify]
  15. It is the later, that is how many posted logs.
  16. and here is the post... preserved for all posterity: I agree - to a point. I place my caches to be found and hope that someone who is stumped can would call a previous finder or me for help. That said, there are some people who put a lot of effort into "clever" hides or ingeniously camoflaged containers and intentionally make their caches a challenge. I'm not sure all of them appreciate someone giving out their secrets.
  17. And it came and went without the fanfare
  18. There are 331839 active caches worldwide. In the last 7 days, there have been 176750 new logs written by 28701 account holders. -straight from the front page of geocaching.com
  19. I feel like there are lots of people hiding behind a couch waiting to yell "SURPRISE!!" but maybe the joke is on us...
  20. hey wait a sec biosearch, aren't you an employee of WKU??
  21. Nah, he is reading over every one of his previous posts in order to come up with 1 statement that will sum up his time here at the forums. Let see... at 10 post a minute.... 2,000 minutes.... divided by 60... that's 33 hours, 20 minutes... so some time on Wednesday we should hear from him!!!
  22. yeah, but it is three bucks we are talking about. I am sure he has spent more on gas to get to the caches he stole than the premium membership.
  23. whoops... I didn't mean for this to go in the website forum. Sorry!!
