  1. OMG...I have a map!!!! It’s not exactly a “nice” street map but, at least I have a map with some detail!! Thank you so much for all of your help!! You are truly a Christmas Angel. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year!! Thank you soooo much!!
  2. ??? Is the file in the handheld unit now? Should I disconnect the unit from the PC? I’m sorry to be so pathetic. You are sooo wonderful to be helping me like this.
  3. Okay. I’m not doing anything without your guidance. I am sooo afraid that I will mess things up. So...it has downloaded and I see it (on the PC) in the Garmin. Now what do I do?
  4. Okay, I am doing that...again. It says it will take about 4 minutes...it’s an old PC.
  5. At rChive, it says to extract the *.exe map installer.....what the heck???!! All I get when I open it is the .img file!! Am I doing something wrong?
  6. Okay I’m back. A cookie and some egg nog helped. Are you still there Atlas? Following directions from rChive, I went to GPSFIleDepot and successfully downloaded a map called “CA-CentralProv Topo.img” onto my PC. It is currently stored in “My Documents”. I’m not even sure if this is a street map but I thought I would use it as a test to see if I could get it to download. I failed the test miserably.
  7. Okay, I’m back and I’m in tears of frustration and feeling VERY OLD. I did as suggested and downloaded BaseCamp onto my PC. Then I went to GPSrChive and downloaded a map. I unzipped it. Then I followed the instructions and went back to BaseCamp. It recognizes the device but in the “box” below, it says “No unlocked maps were found for this device”. So...how do I get BaseCamp to look through my PC to find the map I just downloaded? I am soooo confused.
  8. Thank you soooo much to everyone who replied. I can see that I have some learning to do! LOL Luckily it’s Christmas and, here in Ontario, Canada, we’re in lockdown so I have plenty of free time!! I actually went out this afternoon and, despite not really knowing what I was doing, I managed to find 6 caches. VERY EXCITING. Can’t imagine what it will be like once I have a better understanding of how everything works...together and alone. Thanks for your support. It means a lot to someone with limited techno capabilities.
  9. I finally gave up my Magellan Explorist GC and just bought a Garmin GPSMAP 66s. I THINK I did all the set-up steps. The geocaches are appearing on the screen but, there is no map with them...just the caches located on a blank background. How do I get the map to show the streets, etc? I have an OLD PC, an iPad and the Garmin. Please respond in simple language that my non-techie, senior citizen brain can understand! Thanks!
  10. I have used my Magellan eXplorist GC with VantagePoint on my PC for years. When I got an iPad, I realized that I can't figure out how to use it with my Magellan. I tried using the Groundspeak intro app on my iPad but, it does not seem to lead me anywhere but in circles!! I can't find a thing using just the iPad app. Does this mean I have to pre-load my Mag from the PC whenever I travel? Please reply in non-tech language. Thanks!

    Oshawa group?

I am fairly new to GCing and am hoping to find other GCers in Oshawa, Ontario who would be interested in letting me join them to search locally. It is no fun on my own and my husband worries about me traipsing through the woods on my alone. Are there any established groups or clubs in the area?
  12. Thank you soooooo much!! I downloaded Vantage Point into my PC. I have no idea what it is but, it seems fairly "user friendly" so, I just checked out what I thought sounded like what I needed. After a couple of false starts, I was able to get it to retrieve my PQ and then send it all to my Explorist! I'm sure I will have more questions as I start to do more caching so, we will probably be in touch again sometime! Again, many thanks!!
  13. I am new to geocaching AND I am NOT a computer person. Having said that, I am nervously trying a pocket query because I am now ready to explore beyond my neighbourhood! So, can someone tell me IN PLAIN ENGLISH how to get the PQ into my Magellan ExploristGC? I have created the PQ and I pushed "download" but, nothing was sent to my Explorist!? I have checked the forum but, many of you speak Computereez and that is not a language I understand and I am too old to learn it now. Am hopoing someone out there is like me and has already done it and can explain how. Thanks for your help!
  14. My husband and I are very enthusiastic "newbies" to geocaching. We will be in Barbados over New Years. This will be our first attempt at geocaching outside of our local area (Toronto, Canada). Do I need to download a map? If so, where/how do I do this? I am using a Magellan eXplorist GC. Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.
