  1. My boss expects me to work sometime. Slave-driver. 3 more years and it will be full time geocaching.
  2. Unsolicited testimonial.... A few years ago before I retired as the SF Squadron Cmdr I bought the MULE for everyone in the squadron. One of the best items I'd ever gotten the guys. It's just the right size as a day pack or also carry with a ruck. IIRC the price offerred now is about what military contract was a couple of years ago.
  3. How far has anyone gone for the specific purpose of logging a cache? I don't mean going to Grandma's 1500 miles away and to get away from your funny uncle you sneak out of the house to log a cache. I mean you left your base and went to a distant location for the exclusive and specific purpose of logging a find.
  4. Maybe we should write on all caches "This is not a bomb". That ought to clear up any confusion.
  5. Even more remarkable - this topic is 6 hours old and UMC hasn't posted anything to this thread. Can't be because he doesn't have anything to say. That's never stopped him before.
  6. Many years ago security found an "abandoned" briefcase in the state capitol building. Cause for great concern and immediate action. Try to find who it belongs to? Nay so. Security can't wait for that. Bomb squad? Takes too long. Security chief, having watched all the episodes of Police Squad and not quite as smart as Frank Drebin, proceeds to drag the briefcase in front of the state capitol and fire at it with a shotgun. After several rounds the briefcase was opened to reveal someone's now well ventilated BVDs and formerly neatly typed legislative position papers. D'oh!
  7. This one is the oldest, still in existance, cache in IL. Predates Mountain Marsh by almost a year. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=1542
  8. Sorry I missed your return to LofL. 14 things to do this weekend. Just got home and saw you were here and about. Hope you had a good trip.

I guess we've got it better than I thought in Ol' Tejas. I'll cross IL off my job search. I don't even wanna think about what would happen if we tried to bring our toys. .] Being an out-of-stater you'd be OK possessing the ammo and guns, altho no CCW for anyone and as long as you complied with transporting them properly. An IL resident tho would be in hot water without a FOID card for simply possessing the ammo. And yup, IL is messed up. Thank you Chakagaland politicians.

  11. quote:Originally posted by Team Sand Dollar:I put live ammo in the same class as used golf balls. Would any intelligent gun owner really use ammo that they found in a cache. I've come across a couple of caches that had some rounds in them and if I do in the future I will just remove them like I do with lighters (another well thought out cache item). Team Sand Dollar I leave my signature item in every cache, a fired, empty .38 case. I don't expect anyone to take it. It's not meant as a trade item. It's my silver bullet ("who was that masked man?" for those of you old enough to know where that line is from) as I mount my horse and in a cloud of dust and Hi-Oh Silver, I'm away. I would not put a live round in any cache. 1) I don't see a need to leave a live round. 2) If someone would trade for a live round as a "novelty" it could get them jammed up with the law. In IL possession of ammo without a Firearms Owners ID Card (FOID) is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 1 yr and $1000 fine. And if the cacher happens to have a prior felony conviction they'd be in a heap of more trouble. Even if a person wasn't charged it could sure ruin a good caching weekend.
  12. quote:Originally posted by CYBret: I'd love to meet up there, but my wife insists on having our 3rd child sometime that week and I guess I have to be there for it (you'd think I'd have credit for being there for the first two!). When my wife went into labor with my 2nd I asked her if I needed to be there for the birth. I thought I was going to be out of town on work. She replied "You don't have to be there for the birth. You weren't there for the conception." Women in labor can be mean!
  13. quote:The Barrelhead would be a good choice. And that IS on Wabash and they serve horseshoes. The Wooden Nickel was the littl bar on the southwest corner of 6th and Monroe, across from Jimmy's Sub Shoppe. (Is Jimmy's still there? It used to be Allen's Cigar Store back in the day.) I've driven down North Street oh so many times. I'll be on it again, I guess, when I go to do that cache on the rails to trails trail. Apparently it starts at MacArthur and Wabash. Speaking of MacArthur Blvd, is Penny Lane still there? Gee, I could do this all night... - ! Jimmy's is still there. Another bar where the Wooden Nickle use to be. Cafe Brio or something similar. Only been in it once. Barrelhead still there but now different owners. Still draws a pretty good crowd. Penny Lane still there. Go to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=18348 for my 05/27/02 entry. There's the pix of their wall.
  14. Not only do I know N Grand Ave East and West and South Grand East and West I also know that North St is on the south side of town. The get-together won't be at the Red Coach. Closed one night and never opened again. There's a few GC in the area altho I haven't run into any of them yet. BTW, where was the Wooden Nickle located? On Wabash?
  15. Maybe us real Springfield cachers (IL) could have our own get together. Land of Lincoln cachers? Home of Homer cachers?
  16. For those in the central IL area. Class is being held at the State Museum, 1st and Edwards, Springfield, IL. 1 day class, same class repeated each day. Class size limited to the 1st 10 people each day. Cost is $25 each which includes lunch. Garmin Vistas are provided so everyone uses the same GPS. To reserve a place in class call 217-557-6093 and ask for Brian. I have no interest in this class other than I'm registered for 1 of the days. I've heard some of the other classes on other topics put on at the museum have been excellent. -------------------- G P S and Museum Mapping : Oct 8 - 12, 2002 9:00 am -4:00 pm The workshop teaches the basic use of the Global positioning system for navigation and determining location, and explores how museums use this technology to document the cultural heritage of Illinois. The workshop will cover the following topics: a brief refresher course on latitude and longitude, using topographic maps for navigation, operating a personal G P S receiver, locating and recording positions with G P S, and applications of G P S in archaeology. This workshop is conducted partially outdoors and requires some mild hiking.
  17. Nearly all our squad cars (about 1000) are equipped with GPS and map software with their in-car computers. Eventually all our squads will have it. Give someone lat/long, street address, whatever, and they'll be able to find their way directly to that location. We're ahead of most depts with our technology but I understand why a lot of depts don't have it. Money. Only so many dollars that have to be spent for other things just to keep operating. To pay for the equipment means increase in taxes.
  18. Actually the Good Book supports Geocaching. There are several places where Geocaching is discussed and it tells us to go forth and Geocache..... Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:" While Matthew 7:7 may be directed to most of you I believe the following verse, particularly the last 1/2, applies more to me.... Ecclesiastes 8:17 "Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it."
  19. The local Wally World has their last display model Garmin EMap for $100. They've lost everything with it so it's just the EMap. No book, no strap, just the EMap. My lil bro is looking to get into GPS. What think on the EMap? Wally World says if it doesn't work, bring it back for a full refund.
  20. I've used my GPS around several military installations when I was on active duty. Some of the places had rather sensitive missions. I never had a problem with my GPS getting false readings.
  21. I work in law enforcement. I got a notice at work that if we found people wandering around aimlessly in the woods or other places hiding cans or other containers not to be too quick to blow up the container as a possible bomb. The notice advised the people weren't terrorists, nuts, or wackos, just people playing the geocaching game. Sounded fun so I gave it a try. The notice was right about geocachers not being terrorists but was wrong about not being nuts or wackos.

  23. About 3 years ago I worked a crash of 2 F-16 fighters. We used the GPS to plot the debris patterns of both aircraft, then uploaded the waypoints to plot the debris for each F-16.
