  1. I'm curious, if a cacher is going through a cemetary to a historic grave and takes information off a tombstone that leads to a physical cache that is off the cemetary property. What is the differance from a regular history buff going to a cemetary to visit the tomb of some historic figure from history? What is the purpose of a cemetary? I'm sure one is not entombed with the intention of never be visited. The law targets "geocaching" by name, but there are internet sites that list gravesites of famous departed. Am I guilty of breaking the law if I get the location of a famous SC historic figure off the internet and go visit his grave? As stated earlier, there are laws preventing the desecration of these sites. Why write a law targetting one activity, when it's not the activity they want to prevent, but the possible damage that could be caused by any of a hundred activities. Frank
  2. Sorry to hear that Travis, Believe it or not, this was a cache that thwarted me on many occasions, it's amazing what can happen when you look on the right side of the tree! Will be looking forward to SLBC II Frank
  3. You are so right when mentioning Urban Caches... It's not always a harden piece of gum under the table! I've taken to sneaking a visual scan before reaching around. Unless you have a current tetnis(I'm sure I spelled it wrong) shot, cutting your finger on rusted metal hurts and could cause problems later! See you out Caching! Frank
  4. Have been a participant in the forums, but mostly a lurker now. I'm in it for the caching, I just need to get out more. Frank
  5. I spent 20 years IN the Air Force, but 17 years WITH the Army. We had to run the two miles plus push-ups and sit-ups. I've been caching before it really took off as a hobby/sport/pasttime Now that Uncle Sugar isn't going to send me to some foreign land, I can get serious about caching!!!
  6. I don't have the time or desire to read all the comments made on this thread. Maybe Tiger88 should just be happy he/she resides in America and doesn't have to worry that the secret police aren't planning a visit because of the initial post. Any everyone else can rest at ease and go caching. That's where you'll find me. I LOVE my filthy Geohabit! Frank
  7. I have finally retired from the Air Force. 20+ years so I have a house payment, beer money and some left over for batteries. I found 5 yesterday and will find my 100th before the end of the month. Now it's time to start hiding too!

And to make sure I'm not shot down... Generally I like Geocaching

Well writing speeding tickets to colonels was a nice thing to do I thought such perks were among the primary reasons people volunteered for the armed forces during the past couple of decades. Back on topic ... every club has its perks, including the admins "Good Ol' Boys" club. As several of the admins have stated, they undoubtedly are more familiar with the rules and guidelines than are we proletariats, and would never, ever flaunt them. So I see no problem with admins approving their own or their associates caches. But the issue of "is there a conflict of interest" does bring a favorite scene from a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta to mind: _Geocaching community: What? Never? Admins: No! Never! Geocaching community: What! Never? Admins: Welllll .... Hardly Ever! _ As far as approving your own caches, In the air force I conducted evaluations on people, it was my primary job for several years, I know the regs better than a vast majority of the people doing the job, BUT, I got evaluated by others every year. No matter how well you know the rules, you can get complacent when evaluating yourself. People are never as thorough or critical on themselves. Disclaimer... This is not an attack on the outstanding job done by the admins/approvers at GC.com. I think that if someone else approves your cache, the APPEARANCE of an impropriety is removed!
  11. Dang this has been a long one to catch up with. I tried reading it a couple hours ago and it kep hanging up. All these comments have been overloading the internet all by itself When it was first brought up, I was concidering asking to be in the group, but after some thought, I'll be happy to just see how it turns out in the end. Thanks for your time with this matter Jeremy, I have a buddy that runs a board and he seemed able to run down offenders pretty easy, I was wondering when you'd do something. (ppsssst... Woodster, send me the pumpkins too, that discount on a walking staff sounds like a good deal! Frank
  12. What ever happened to the big bad wolf, the boggie-man, or any other string of evil doers that this kid should be afraid of? I mean really, what kind of dad doesn't put a bit of fear into thier children? Not for the sake of scaring them but a dose of reality... There are some bad hombre's out there! PS.. Cybo, they gave up the van years ago, they watch you right thru your monitor now, come on, why do you think it's called a "Monitor"?
  13. quote:Originally posted by Bill-W5WAF:I recently had someone find one of my caches and left the note something to the effect that "This cache receives my vote as one most likely to cause a bomb scare". Made me think: 1. Has any cache ever been mistaken for a bomb? 2. What does an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) look like? How can we make sure that our caches don't look like an IED? Remember: The bomb that brought down the Pan AM flight over Lockerbie, Scotland was in a transistor radio. The unibomber sent his devices in finely crafted wooden cases. Couldn't you put a device in a Tupperware Container? You've posed some good questions Bill, Let me post my 2 cents. Answer #1: You bet! and the reason why is directly related to Answer #2. Answer #2: an IED can be made out of any ordinary container, it might be made with something one doesn't equate as a container. In Viet Nam, IED's were made out of C-ration boxes/ Radios/ teddy Bears or any object that an American would notice and pick up. The main difference with the situation of a booby-trapped cache would be that if a terrorist was to set a trap, The current flavor of bad guy wants to cause numerous casualties. It might not be worth thier time and effort to make a device that might hurt 1-3 people, so a rural cache is probably less likely a problem. Plus they would be showing their hand so to speak. I think it is much more likely that if a IED was made from a container that is usually used for caches, it would be placed in a place with a high concentraion of potential targets, not out in the woods or a park where you find most caches.
  14. Allow me to respond. My post had several questions. But Woodster is right, the title is the main question. If several "Geocachers" are in a discussion on this web site and being civiltoward each other, "Why would an Admin tell us that we have to take our discussion to another web site?" There were tendancies to tell people to go somewhere else. I understand that Jeremy is running a non-commercial site (THANKS JEREMY, this is a major reason I like GC.com) and hits are not his major reason for the board, it's Geocaching. But if your attracting geocachers, "Why would you tell them to go away? I am not looking for some response from Jeremy or the Admins, I've goten a response already. It is mostly a retorical question.
  15. IF pirating becomes a larger problem, I think people may start posting the parking location of thier cache and have to write to the owner for the Lat/Long or a hint. I duuno how to solve this issue.
  16. I have my radio unless I'm at work, and I make perfuctory (<--spell wrong I'm sure)calls out to anyone caching
  17. I posted the url on the Cache Gear forum. I was kinda excited to get cache info through Avantgo, looking forward to it. Frank
  18. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat: quote:Welcome to the Groundspeak forums, the location to discuss topics on Geocaching and GPS usage. ...and ham radio. I never figured out that connection I've eaten a Ham sandwich while caching, but after reading Jeremy's post I don't think that's what he means!
