  1. Because we are a Gecaching Team...that and she has more finds than I do. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  2. I am still getting a WAAS signal. Although lately, I am having trouble receiving a strong sat. signal on occasion. Could be because I have dropped my unit one or two times too many... or maybe I am not holding my mouth right. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  3. My enjoyment is the journey to the cache site, not spending an hour walking in circles trying to find the hidden box (and yes, trampling the grass around it). As long as the cache coordinates were listed accurately, any cache should be easy to find (well hidden or not). It is the people who are sloppy in their readings that irk me. If I am looking for a level 1 or a level 4 cache...I still expect accuracy in the directions. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  4. On the other hand... Magellan has great warranty service. Watch it closely and don't hesitate to call them and return it. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  5. I like the idea of an area search also. Example; caches with 5 miles wide of a highway on a 100 mile stretch. Makes for travelling more bearable. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  6. You should try to be as accurate as possible, especially when placing a cache (including elevation). Take several readings... walk out/into your cache from the four directions...pause...and then take the average reading. Sloppily placed caches really bite. Accuracy is part of the "game." I enjoy it when people comment on my caches (placed or found)and how accurate I was. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  7. Go to RS and get a $ 20 charger with two 'free' batteries and buy a spare set at $ 10. More if you like to stock up. No matter how little you spend on a rechargeable set, it will save you money in the long run. As in a few days of caching... Quality... I am not an engineer, but it stands to reason more is better. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  8. For me the cache hike and hunt is the reward. I don't care to sign the paper log book (but I do) as the web site is my official "log book". Caches with crap become clutter over time. I suspect that most people, except for those who bring their kids along, don't care for any trinkets. Travel Bugs being my exception to the rule, I like to find and rehide T Bugs. The best trinket to leave behind in a quality cache is a coin or two to reward the guy who placed the cache. These puppies get expensive after you start making a few of them (containers, note books, trinkets, and travel bugs, etc.). Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  9. The more information the better. This is a mental game (as in mentally challenging). Part of the game is to see (as the cache creator) how accurate you can be in placing the cache. It really sucks when people just 'ball park' their coordinates. I live in the flat lands of Minnesota, but we have a few 'hills' of 100' -- 600' or better in elevation change. It is especially important near a cliff to post elevation. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  10. I had to send my Platinum in for warranty service twice and both times it was returned to me within 8 days fixed plus a few goodies. Yes, their email response is on the slow side, but when you mail it to them for repair or replacement they are great. Problems I had were the blue sea on the display for which I got a new unit and the broken battery springs that they soldered. Scott Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  11. My unit stopped working out of the blue last week also. It is only 4 months old. It starts to power up, and then it shuts down. I sent it back under warranty. Have to see what happens. Scott Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  12. Yes. You need to register the bug as left at the cache, and then do a second step of "finding the bug" to take it back. The bug then keeps a record of where it has been and how far it has traveled. I am just over 8,000 miles of geocaching this year (according to my bug log). quote:Originally posted by the jackal1:scott johnson, could you elaborate on how you use a travel bug to keep track of your cache finds? the method sounds interesting and i would like to use it but i'm not sure what you mean by: "Just remember to log it in, and then pick it up again, when you do so. Otherwise someone will go there trying to find the bug." log it in, then pick it up? how does this keep track of your geocache finds. also, do you have to go back to the cache again, a second time to pick it up? i would appreciate some help understanding this. thanks. 13. I have a complaint about updates in general: I lose my custom screens and have to recreate them each time I upgrade. The instructions say to delete the software and then update. Am I doing something wrong? Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  14. I am also getting the backwards compass readings. None of your suggestions below worked to fix it. Any more ideas? I like the upgrades made in the software. Provided my compass will come back online. Thanks quote:Originally posted by mtnsteve:I had a problem with my compass pointing South instead of North and a sluggish needle (same thing happened when I first got it) and had to go in to "Compass Orient" and change it to GPS Course, then back out to the main screen, then go back and switch it back to Magnetic North again....after that it worked great. I had to the same thing once with v3.12, once, as well. So far I have had no other problems with v4.02...my computer room is at the exact same coord's as before, and the cache down the street still reads 4' away while I'm standing above it.... it's actually about 4'/5' feet down the hill. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it. 15. My first thought was "why are you caching in a place where you are worried about your safety?". My second thought was -- well, I won't share that one with you. Try getting a dog. They not only protect you from whatever... but they also help you to meet new "friendly" people. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  16. http://www.magellangps.com/en/news/releases/viewRelease.asp?id=227 The winner is listed here. I should say thanks to Magellan for the contest. Wish I had won. ;-) Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  17. I have version 3.00A purchased this summer. Map Send Streets is just streets. Map Send Topo (as in topography) includes streets. That could be the price confusion you are seeing. I have no major complaints with my software or Platinum. I bought mine from www.thegpsstore.com and they have been good to work with when I had a warranty problem. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  18. I like everyone's wish list. To those I add: Temperature & air pressure on a Nav Screen and not the hidden screens. Gee, my list is pretty short if I don't repeat the others. Thanks Scott Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  19. Maggellan had a contest on their web site to enter the Jaos rally in Las Vegas. http://www.magellangps.com/en/contests/JAR/index.asp Did anyone here enter this contest? I contacted the judge amelia@delyon-hunt.com and was told all winners had been notified. When I asked for a winners list and a copy of the winning entry so that I could improve my chances next time... I got the brush off. My scam radar is starting to go off and I am curious what anyone else knows. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  20. I usually post my coordinates if they are more than 10 feet off of the owner's. Not to be mean, but rather to help the next person. The more I have to stumble around looking, the more likely I am post mine if they end up being differant. I will also post mine when they are exactly the same as a compliment to the cache placer. Finding caches is part physical and part mental, being accurate on your coordinates is part of the challenge. I feel guilty when a cache I placed is not accurate to the WAAS minimums. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  21. I have never been 'big' on leaving toys in my caches. But not being a parent, I can see now where kids would like to find treasures. My idea of fun is simply the walk to the cache, finding it, and signing the log book. I do leave things like individual kleenex packs, batteries, occasional books, and other usefull stuff. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  22. Heck no her leash did not slip off. I didn't put it on. That is my whole point. People are worrying more about dogs than criminals and making responsible dog owners the criminal. My dog is better trained and listens to my commands (verbal and hand signals) quicker than most people's children. A leash does not make someone a more responsible owner than a free dog. And yes, I clean up after her in the woods too. Furthermore, we were the only people in park. The trails were empty. The ranger got us as we were loading into our SUV (had to throw that in too... I bet you are one of those SUV haters too). It is that attitude that is what is wrong with this country today. Small personal freedoms have been taken away and now the big ones are next. I will gladly pay the $ 10 fine if it means my dog can run free in the woods. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.

  24. Millie the Wonder Dog and I got a ticket for being off leash after dark in the local park this week. Hat's off to our County Park Rangers for the fine job they are doing protecting the citizeny of Minnesota from terrorists lurking in the woods with their dogs. I feel so much safer knowing they are protecting us. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
  25. Spend the extra few dollars and get the unit with the most memory. In the long run, you don't want to be running the equivelent of Windows 95 when the new software that comes out is Windows XP. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
