I have a camera in my cache and I expect it to be developed before long. I could just set up my own website, but it would be nice to do what you did. 5. Camera, of course. You could take a pic of your group with the set in the background. Also, anyone know how to get a satellite photo for the cache? The ones on MapQuest are a little old. I can make out my house, but not the set. Is there a way to get a more current pic? Also, when the show starts, there is a temptation for people to find the area and yell with a bullhorn to the cast, or try to lob a tennis ball over the fence with a note on it etc. Should I discourage this type of behaviour to cachers? Is there a more benevolent activity that would fit with the theme? Also, there are houses very nearby and any unseemly activity in the area would draw undue attention to the cache, so I will make a strict warning about being discreet. Especially when the show gets under weigh, they have people on the lookout for crazy fans trying to get on TV. It makes for a fun experience. Since I live a couple of blocks away, I would ride my bike past there a lot and see what new and exciting activity was going on. Half my life is spent explaining to Christians why I am a deadhead. 8. I can send and receive from my GPSr to my Mapsource software, but it always creates a new file. I have waypoint set A on my GPSr and waypoint set B on a .mps file. I am trying to have a .mps file with both A and B on it and also have both sets on my GPSr. Whenever I upload, or download, it erases the previous set. I cannot send set B into a file that already has set A. Anyone know of a 'merge' function? The import function does not include .mps in the available file types. 9. OK, here is a more specific idea for the Southern California (LA area) cachers to meet. The reward for finding my cache is a night at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. This is a private club for magicians and their guests. Three have found the cache so far, and I can take up to 10 people at a time. If anyone is interested, we could go on a Thursday or Friday night. If there are any of you with kids, like me, we can make a date on a Sunday when they open the doors to those under 21 during the daytime. It is a lot of fun, and would be a great way to meet those of us that live in the area. Go find my cache so you can be in on the fun. Let me know what you think. 11. I am passing from the very new cacher to the been here a bit cacher status. I have found 15 caches to date centered around my home in Studio City. I see several of the same names in the logs and figure for the amount of caches/cachers here in the area, some of us are neighbors. Any thoughts as to a gathering of some kind? I'd love to meet my competition. There is a a group I plan to meet on Thursdays in Disneyland, but that wouldn't work for anyone not an annual passholder, or willing to part with a big chunk of cash for the entrance fee. For the rest of you, are there any meeting spots that you have gathered before? I like the Tree People at Coldwater and Mulholland, where there happen to be a couple of caches placed. Easy parking and a place to have a picnic lunch or something similar. I have a three year old daughter, so some place family friendly and close would be in order. Is this idea appealing to anyone here in the Valley or LA? Let me know, and if enough people are interested, maybe we can set a date. 12. What is the system used in Hertz rental cars. I recently rented a car while mine was being painted and drove with the built in GPS unit for a week. My wife thought it was annoying, because we live in Los Angeles and know the streets by heart. But, I had a lot of fun trying to 'trick' the unit. It recalculated if I missed a turn, or tried to take a better route than it had picked. But, bottom line, I was very impressed with its abilities, both on the major freeways and in the tiny canyon sidestreets. Is this a proprietary software? Or, can you get that particular program to work with your own GPSr? Hertz NeverLost Half my life is spent explaining to Christians why I am a deadhead. 13. Did I get rated a one star for this thread because you don't like the idea for my cache? Or because talking about new caches is boring? Should I just place the cache with the coordinates and not try to spice it up with a theme? Half my life is spent explaining to Christians why I am a deadhead. 14. It is public access along the river. People jog and walk dogs there all the time. It is across the river from the studio's property. In Los Angeles, when you say river you are describing a big cement trough with a trickle of water in the center, if you are lucky. There is a dirt path outside the fence that people walk down. You can access this area with a little trail off the street without jumping or opening or otherwise crossing any private property fences. 15. I have no access in the Survey group, so I'll ask here. I am about to place a cache behind the CBS lot with a great view of the set of Big Brother. They are not currently filming, but when they are, you can see the place where they live for the duration of the show. The set is pretty big and is still set up, so I am assuming that they will go for a third season. I am wondering what type of items would go in a cache with the Big Brother theme. A copy of the novel by George Orwell? Spy equipment/camera? Any other ideas? How about posting the coordinates themselves. Should I just post them? Since this is an easy hike (when you find the best way into the river path) maybe there should be some puzzle relating to the theme to get the coordinates? Help me brainstorm this one out, because I don't want to make another simple urban cache like so many others. Here in Hollywood, you are limited with the wilderness areas available, but with an urban cache, I'd like there to be something unique about any cache I place. Thanks for the input. 17. I can download waypoints and tracks and maps into my unit. If I don't use a map, it says 'no map' and if I use one, it says 'mapsource'. The problem is, I don't see any difference, no matter what the zoom level. Exporting data into the unit adds a whole bunch more waypoints of local features (malls and such) but I don't see any streets, rivers, or topo altitude lines. I am using the Mapsource TOPO cd, so I assume that is why I don't get the streets, but I should at least see some land features, right? This is the Venture model with 1 mb of memory. 20. I got a travel bug, (TB2CB) and passed it on this weekend. It is a journal, that I added to. The instructions inside said that I could either put it in another cache, or pass it on to someone who is not aware of our game. Since the last ten caches were not large enough to fit the journal, I passed it on to a friend who was returning home to San Francisco. I figured this would be the best way to get the journal on its journey. I made sure she was computer literate and promised to log her possession of the book and pass it on quickly to someone else who would do the same. Trouble is, the bug still shows that I have it on the page. I can't "drop" it in a cache online, as I didn't do that. Until she logs in and "takes" it, any suggestions? 23. I am looking for ideas for my second cache. Before you jump in, I know I have only about 4 finds so far. I am not planning to place this one soon. I am just doing some research for good ideas. The first part of this research involves finding as many caches as I can. Living in Los Angeles, I have been able to do one per day without driving more than thirty minutes from my house. The second part involves research on the net. From the puzzle and magic community, I am brainstorming for clever puzzle ideas. I don't want to place the cliche hike through the woods and find a tupperware box cache. I think there are plenty of those in Los Angeles to go around. I am more interested in placing clever multi-caches with puzzles to solve before you can get the next coordinates. In the city, I think I could come up with some really clever puzzles that could involve many local landmarks, doing research about sites and using clues from the research to find the next clue about the next location. I am envisioning a multi-day, multi-part cache that would require a day trip for each leg to get the clues and then maybe a week of research depending on your ability to interpret the clue to find the next coordinates. You might have to look on the internet, or 'gasp' read a book in the library to find the subject matter. All of these clues would follow a common theme to lead you through not only a physical journey, but an educational journey on a particular subject. You would most likely have to team up to find people with varying skills to find the final cache. Of course, there would be a big payoff for the first to find it. Maybe I am a little ambitious, and obviously, this type of cache would take a long time to create properly, but I am looking for ideas and maybe pointers to existing caches that involve this type of detail. Anyone have any good ideas? Anyone want to collaborate on a project like this? Half my life is spent explaining to Christians why I am a deadhead.
