  1. Trudy & I wish each and every one of you the seasons best and a cache prosperous New Year! tb
  2. quote:Originally posted by rfriel1:in my first cache i plan on hiding after christmas, why not put some MRE food packets in the cache? the MRE food, Meal ready to eat, used my military and a myriad of other uses, hiking, camping, survival food etc,..... is nuclear, chemical, and biological warefare proof for 10 years. as long as there are not holes in the covering, i'd eat some MRE food found in a cache, but then again, someone would find some way to poison it so i'd better not. As a US Army Veteran of 27 years, I can unequivocably state that MREs are not food. If you would eat that stuff you must have been in the quartermaster corps trying to make corpses of the rest of us. I would rather be eating C-Rations, K-Rations or even Kennelration. Who ever listed a geocache as a dining establishment? No thanks, I'll find a diner out on the highway. Yuck! tb
  3. Nope, it just won't go away
  4. Can we delete a message be clicking "Back" a bunch of times?
  5. I just caught this thread.. Let me go borrow a digital camera...
  6. Trudy & I have gone to a few GeoEvents during the past year and had the opportunity to meet bunches of geocachers there. We have also met a few on the trails. Meeting cachers on the trails is a particular treat for me.. I don't get out much. I think Trudy would agree with me that we have never met a cacher we didn't like. We have enjoyed the opportunity to talk with every one of them. I especially like newbies [with a little salt and pepper].
  7. Slow down. The birds cycle through their signals every thiry seconds. At a good clip, you can easily cover 10-20 yards in that time. It's been said above, in a couple of different ways, when you start to get close to the cache you will need to slow down and change your technique. Give the birds the opportunity to take you to the cache. When you hit 50-100 feet, put your brakes on. Keep on caching. tb
  8. I believe the idea has merit. tb
  9. Well, we have done a lot of thinking about this since we discussed it here last July. Now we are of the opinion that you only need to pack a compass, a pen, the GPSr and the cache sheets. Everything else is just nice to have along. For those who are packing for a safari, don't forget a jar of Tucks. They are a great astringent for bites, stings and poison ivy.
  10. but it is no contest. Trudy & I will be drilling... this is something we have never done before. Try geocaching naked lately?
  11. While many of the restrictions are appropriate, others are much too restrictive. My personal gut reaction is to take our business elseware. Do not take geocaching user fees to Arkansas State Parks. Do not play by their rules, take the game elsewhere. Snub the jerks!
  12. quote:Originally posted by trippy1976:So would "trippyism" be a trudyism? http://www.mi-geocaching.org/ That would make "trudyism" another trippyism. and you would be one up.
  13. quote:Originally posted by ACME geocachers: quote:Originally posted by Cheesehead Dave:While I'm happy that Team Cachebarr was OK, and that a plunderer was caught with container in hand, I've got to wonder... how dumb can some people be? I agree; you don't get it. You should be directing a large dose of that anger at yourself for not hiding the cache better, especially since you knew the area was open to hunters. ACME If you had been there, your remarks might not be as critical. As a finder, I can say that the cache placement was not inappropriate. The hunter had actually seen cachers retrieve the cache on the previous day and then decided he would go back. Knowing Cheesehead Dave, I think that his response is mild compared to what mine would have been.
  14. quote:Originally posted by MAntunes:Well.... these last ones aren't exactly the kind of replies I expected to get to my post in this section of the Forum... I was surprised by these responses as well. These readers lost the point of your story. A story, I might add that is worthy of sharing. I am sure that you will have many more to share. We are looking forward to reading them. T&tb
  15. quote:Originally posted by trippy1976: ...un-recently I like that word! I think I even know what you mean by it. we need to call this a trippyism.
  16. quote:Originally posted by umc:Did you just call me a newbie? I think Trippy was calling me a newbie.
  17. quote:Originally posted by Pantalaimon:Thanks for the Markwellian Markwellish Markwell, Planet. For some reason I couldn't find that thread. I'm surprised actually that the topic had been disussed earlier. Now, can someone tell me what to put in my Geocaching backpack? I KNOW that hasn't been discussed. Pan Cachito ergo sum. I Geocache, therefore I am. Actually it has. Here is your markwell. 18. quote:Originally posted by umc:[Re: Trolling] .... Someone sets posts out there hopping to catch someone just to get a rise out of them. Trolling for negative attention. UMC, I like your definition better although it is in conflict with mine. Perhaps we can agree to use the term in either context. Or, would that just muddy the waters? tb
  19. There you have it. I believe we have a consensus. The verb markwell needs to be capitalized, Markwell the name must be while markwell the noun as in reference would not be. My first encounter with the term "troll" was many years ago when AOL was new and I believed AOL was the communications panacea. Troll on those forums meant a lurker; someone who soakes up all the wonderful input to a thread and contributes nothing in return.

  22. I have mixed emotions here. Offsets are great and may even be good for newbies to place. 5 or more WP in a multi cache if done right can be quite an adventure but frequently become boring. And, if you miss one WP you wind up in neverland. We recently attempted a 5 WP multi and invested nearly a dozen hours on three different days [about 4Hr/day] trying to locate a cache that no longer exists. Bummer! Virts, Multi, Micro, Normal, locationless, events... we do them all. Every one of them has its' own merits. Keep on caching. tb
  23. Higgins did respond off forum to my charges of him being a troll/sock puppet. He should have posted that reply here. Higgins appears to be a newbie that is just having trouble getting started. The local [Madison, WI] NBC affiliate was appearantly creating news intended to appear as a public service and found a source for negative comment [from Minnesota, home of the zip-lock cache container] to balance the views on the feature. I can't go into any detail since this is just hearsay at this point. I don't believe the feature will have great impact other than ruffling my feathers. And, perhaps Higgins hasn't been with us long enough to know the depth of our respect for the environment and property rights. Higgins, Dive in. Do a few caches, place a few too. There is more than enough room here for you. We will try not to be as abrasive in the future. tb
