  1. Does the smilie get taken away from your cache count?
  2. Since the cache is still in the correct location/position and no log has been made then maybe the cache owner took it?
  3. Off Topic (kind of) - did anyone else get an e-mail today congratulating them on completing Mission GC? I thought there was 1 more mission next weekend?
  4. Thank you, glad I'm not the only one missing this feature, I would like to know if this will be added at a later date?
  5. Wow, that would be really hard to find! The one I found was about 6" in diameter and it was laying next to a fallen tree with another limb laid over it. This was a multi-cache, at the first stage was a lock-n-lock box with clues as to what you were looking for at the final.
  6. +2 When I think about the number of hours I spent watching DVDs on weekends back in those days (before kids consumed my spare time) it makes me sad..... +3 If only I was reading the correct newsgroups at that time. I spent most of my time in "alt" newsgroups, not "sci" newsgroups. Would've loved to have known about this hobby in 2002. +4 I *was* reading a newsgroup (rec.backcountry) that had lots of discussions about using a GPS when selective availability was turned off in 2000 (I was a usenet site administrator as far back as 1984) but I guess it just didn't take that I should get one. +5 I've heard about this for a while, but don't know why we didn't try it out years ago. We could've done this with our kid when he was smaller..not now when he's an adult and working full time (we're only off on Sundays together), and my dad said he and my step mom use to do this years ago....wish I could of done it with him. His age has caught up to him now...and his going out for hikes days are behind him now it sounds like. I've done a fair amount of hiking. (I've done half the AT.) It gets me out of the house. I got a yellow Garmin eTrex from Marlboro (2003?) The techie columnist in my paper (The Star-Ledger) did an article on Geocaching in 2004. "Hmm..." said I. "There's a BrianSnat cache not far off the trail (that I was maintaining at that time.)" So I went for it! (So, it's all BrianSnat's fault!) Eleven years later, it still gets me out of the house for exercise. I have a brother who started caching in 2002, but he never told the rest of us about it! +7 I actually signed up on the GC site back in 2011 but didn't have a GPS or smartphone at the time. I didn't actually start caching until 2015, I wish I would have started in 2011 when I signed up.
  7. Besides the bolt caches, fake bug caches and birdhouse caches, the coolest cache I've found so far is a real piece of wood about 1.5 foot long cut in half length wise and the two pieces fit together with dowel rods and there is a place inside hollowed out that a film canister sits inside that holds the log. This particular cache is one that someone actually made, not one of the premade that you can buy. Anyone would very easily walk right past it if they didn't know what to look for. I will upload a pic tonight when I get home.
  8. I always stock mine with a FTF path tag along with other FTF related items like keychains that I make. I also stock my caches with a variety of swag related to Geocaching. I make GC key chains, magnets, tokens, GC stickers, GC pencils and sharpeners, marbles, smiley face bouncy balls, other fun trinkets, etc.
  9. I would like to find unique containers, even if they aren't big enough to hold swag.
  10. I personally would prefer: 6 traditional caches which are large enough to hold swag and trackables
  11. It's on the trackable page (check it for a trackable in your cache): Actions Mark missing - click go. It's not among the log types. Ahh, gotcha! Thank you so much!
  12. Ok I am currently in the situation where I am a CO and one of my caches lists it has 2 TB and a Geocoin in it. I have left notes on each of their pages saying that they were no longer in my cache. I didn't know what else to do until I found this post and you all are saying that I as the CO have the ability to log somewhere that the trackables are not in my cache. Can someone please tell me how to do that? I have went to the pages for each trackable to log a note but there was not an option in the drop down that said "Not in Cache". Is it on MY cache page somewhere? Thanks for any help!
  13. Can you supply the ultra fine point pen, the board to lean against and the clamps to hold the log then, not many people can actually write that small and you need to consider then when thinking about maintenance. Not speaking of my caches, I don't place nanos b/c they are a pain. As a cacher, in my opinion, you need to try to be prepared for as many scenarios as possible. Knowing I will be out looking for nanos, I do carry a fine tipped pen with me and I usually do have a hard surface to write on such as my phone/GPS which I believe most of us have with us. So NO I don't think this is an unusual or difficult request. If you have a long cache name, you can always shorten/abbreviate it. For example: mine I could shorten to L180, Lucke180, etc. It is not an impossible feat to write small.
  14. Those are 2 great caches, what's the problem? The bottom of the PVC pipe is partially buried and it is attached to a utility pole, which is against the rules.
  15. When cachers write larger than they should taking up several places on a nano log.
  16. Ditto! What is worse is you have seen that CO active almost daily but they still won't fix their cache. LOL, Why would that DNF or just one cache be a problem? I fail to see why one would like to "clear the map" anyway. Clearing an area would mean to find all caches there and I've never been to an area where I'd consider ALL caches to be interesting enough to go find them all. I would never go for an (for me) uninteresting cache just to clear the map. I still have 36 unfound caches within 2 Km from home and see only 2 I just might do. 7 are T4 and higher so we're not doing those anyway. To each their own on how you want to play the game. I myself would like to be able to claim all the caches in my surrounding area, I don't see where or why that would be a problem, that is my personal goal.

  18. This one is a plastic box of sorts that is buried in the ground, the ammo box is inside. There is a green plastic lid that covers the container that is flush with the ground.
  19. Here lately I have found a couple of caches that are a PVC pipe attached to the side of a utility pole by a bracket.
  20. Kind of like this one that I found. Its actually a piece of a real tree branch that had been cut off, a hole drilled out in the end of it, a screw placed in the hole and then screwed back onto the tree. The bison tube fits in the hole of the fake cut off limb and if I remember correctly there was a piece of wood or something that covered the hole but it wasn't in place when we found it.
  21. Never mind, I didn't read all comments before I posted this. My suggestion was filling the tube with water but others have mentioned before. Regarding the string you found, maybe the CO isn't the one that attached the cache to a string, might have been a previous cacher that did it without the CO knowing in order to make the retrieving easier. They might have thought it originally had a string and thought they were "fixing" it for said CO. That might be why the CO isn't "fixing" it b/c it wasn't set up that way in the first place. Just a thought.
  22. When you set up your notification, one of the parameters was search radius. Default is 10 miles. You can change this to 50 miles. It's interesting that we can get notifications for new caches up to 50 miles away but the "New" search sets a maximum radius for a proximity search to 30 miles. I noticed that too.
  23. Is there a way to set the parameters for how far away you can get new cache notifications for? I seem to only get them for the ones within a 10 mile radius.
  24. Yes, and the ownerless caches. I came across a neglected cache a few days ago and was going to leave a note to the cache owner and the send message feature is disabled because the account is inactive. Why not archive caches that belong to inactive accounts? This one irks me, there is a cache like this in my area that has a few recent DNF, the CO is inactive and has been since early 2011 and doesn't respond to e-mails. I messages the publishing reviewer some months back asking that it be archived but they haven't done it yet. Maybe you should post that NA on the cache page, but I have found out that doesn't always get a response from the volunteer reviewer either. If that did not work and I were interested in placing a cache where a ownerless one was holding me up, I would contact GS and explain to them directly. I would post an NA log in a heartbeat on any caches with disabled CO accounts. I just logged a NA note so we'll see what happens.
