Are The Rules That Important
Captain Gore-tex replied to Captain Gore-tex's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Okay, consider it job done, not worried about banter from the owner, he/she is entitled to their opinion, am happy to ignore it. The matter is now closed. -
How do you do this bit please?

Improved Export From Gsak To Memory Map
Captain Gore-tex replied to roolku's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
This is one of those gidgies that you know you want to use but also know with unering confidence that you will fail due to a lack of technical knowledge (edit the script? oh yeah). Before embarking on the trial and more error approach is there an idiots guide to condense the considerable advice in the thread inot a single step by step to this? (whilst I think I know the answer coming I live in hope) Thanks -
A quick note to gauge opinion.... After a couple of unsuccessful attempts I reverted to 'previous finder' help to locate a cache that has proved quite elusive for many, despite being a one *. I did find it but it was located within an area of collapsed dry stone walling, which is why I hadn't found it previously as I believed this type of site wasn't acceptable so hadn't searched it. I duly logged the cache and emailed the owner a polite message regarding its site to receive a less than complimentary reply indicating that I need to go forth and purchase a new life. On reflection I can understand that as the cache is quite remote, and the wall is in a state of disrepair, there may be some merit in not complaining, I had found it and searching for a cache isn't compulsory. I personally believe that this view is outweighed by the possibility of damage being caused to someone else's property by poor positioning of a cache, especially as there are a thousand and one other possible sites in the near vicinity. Should I report it to the moderators for their decision, or should I wind my neck in?

Unusual Geocoins, A Dilemma?
Captain Gore-tex replied to freespirit1402's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
This is a non-issue, those that nick them should receive more focus than those that move them on, belatedly or not. -
Tweedledum And Tweedledee
Captain Gore-tex replied to The Ghostbusters's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I know that there are a couple of cachers attempting both of these two as we speak. There might be a slight problem with the hint in Tweedledum, as the co-ords are taking them well away from where I was sent when I did it. I'm sure they will get there in the end though..... I have just done the two today and I think the first clue may have been muddled by the owner with something else he is in possession of. Found with a good googling and not a perve in sight, although I looked a little strange to the rock climbers poking round the bottom of the cliff. (stone cliff not male Cliff before any clever posts are made) -
Tweedledum And Tweedledee
Captain Gore-tex replied to The Ghostbusters's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Just noticed the cache has been reactivated...yipee Completed the first part this morning and am waiting to complete the second. Woe betide any misbehaviour in the area otherwise keep your eye out for a man with a Leki pole partially visible from a nether region (his region, my pole) Its a great area and I wont be put off by those committing criminal acts. Thanks for replacing this series. -

Poi Loader For New Garmin "x" Series
Captain Gore-tex replied to GeoBobC's topic in GPS technology and devices
I must be missing something simple, why have thousands of custom POIs if you can't see them on the map unless zoomed right in? Why not just stick to the 1000 caches and update it frequently. I can't quite see the point? -
Autorouting And Car Navigation With A 60cx
Captain Gore-tex replied to ninjakyle's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've been using it to navigate round some really complicated country lanes and have found it excellent. I usually use a tomtom on the PDA but have found the 60CSx fast and accurate and easy to follow. -
Garmin X Series 2.62 Beta Released
Captain Gore-tex replied to robertlipe's topic in GPS technology and devices
Is anyone else having an issue of the map or compass screen freezing between caches or waypoints? The only way I am able to unfreeze it is to recalibrate the compass each cache! Will try it tomorrow with the new beta software but am not hopeful. Garmin say they have reported the bug to USA. -
60csx..is The Reception Worth The $?
Captain Gore-tex replied to crazycoyote's topic in GPS technology and devices
Just be aware I think there is a bug that freezes the compass and the map on the transition between caches. I have posted a report to Garmin but with no reply yet. There are other posts on this forum with the same symptoms. I have all the latest software downloads and it still does it requiring a recalibration after every cache! I would wait until this is clarified by Garmin. -

Fred, just out of interest what was their reply to your problem, mine does the same? -
Garmin 60csx Electric Compass
Captain Gore-tex replied to vaetanone's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hmm, just browsing to see if my problem is listed and this seems to be the closest thread. After finding a cache and noting it as found in the compass screen the compass itself freezes and declines to turn with a change in route. The distance counts down as you get closer to the next cache but the bearing shown bears no relationship to where it should be. The only way to tempt it back is to recalibrate it. I therefore have to recalibrate after every cache, how about that for inconvenience? Could it be anything to do with the settings for the compass turning on or off? I have installed 2.60 with no change in effect. Any thoughts gratefully received! -
Software Bug With Garmin Etrex Vista Cx
Captain Gore-tex replied to Merlin4610's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have a similar issue with a new 60CSx. When moving from cache to cache and using the compass screen it freezes on confiming found on the current cache. The compass pointer freezes but the distance changes and is only rectified by calibrating the compass after every cache! Upgraded the software but no joy and Garmin seem unable to respond to my mail so far. Anything familiar or do I have a Friday late shift model? -
What`s The Best Pda To Buy
Captain Gore-tex replied to CANTOR CLAN's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I just got issued a jasjar from iMate for work. It is a little chunky but has a 1gig memory card that means there is loads of room for maps, runs gps with a little gigy in the rucksack, can email in the field and has a decent phone and camera. Still won't find the cache for you but it aint far off! -
This may sound anally retentive but can you collect icons for your own coins you set loose if you log them?

Thought about that Mr Remote, however it was bought through Taunton Leisure and had the European mapping on it, and nothing else so I am happy it is a Uk model. -
Wanted...garmin Mapping Software
Captain Gore-tex replied to Captain Gore-tex's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Okay, I give up on a basemap. The post from gekocacher includes a link that shows the TOPO to be compatible with the vista series and states in the blurb that it must be unlocked before loading on a card or into a compatible receiver, hence I am assuming it is also ready to go on the vista c (fingers crossed) -
Wanted...garmin Mapping Software
Captain Gore-tex replied to Captain Gore-tex's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Thanks for the replies. In Map setup there is no longer any map name, there used to be but now it has gone. Additionally on the navigation screen, under the scale in the dreaded 'no map' wording. Despite what Garmin say there is definately no map remaining on my vista. I can't find any basemap to download anywhere, hence I need something to load and guessed the metroguide model would be the cheapest and easiest to source second hand as it doesn't need an unlock code. Moote, as I see from the Garmin site the TOPO map for the UK is ready and should work on the non x models (it is shown as a Cd, not a memory card). Unfortunately, no dealer I have found has it in stock. Anyone out there can help it would be appreciated. -
Wanted...garmin Mapping Software
Captain Gore-tex replied to Captain Gore-tex's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Thanks dave, it's not the contours I need but the metroguide mapping. Incidentally I have loaded these contours on previously from this site and foud that they slow everything down greatly on the receiver.
