  1. The Charleston Clean City commision was extremely responsive and helped me find a great area. They are providing additonal bags, gloves, even a dump truck for us! The event page is here and should be up soon. Hope to see you there. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  2. Ok I finally got a spot. The cache page should be up soon. Check out Charleston CITO. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  3. We were unable to meet with Catherine today due to some schedule conflicts. We should be meeting Monday or Tuesday to finalize a location. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  4. I am meeting with Kathleen from the City of Charleston Cleen sweep organization on Friday morning to scout out some possible areas. They will provide us with trash bags, scoop nets, pick up sticks, etc. Basically whatever we need. The city will pick up everything we bag or collect so we won't have to haul it. All we need are some warm bodies! I am also thinking of hiding a cache with a decent first finders prize in it for those who particpate. This will probably be at James Is county park to coincide with the event they have planned for that day. I will post back on The 11th as to the location and time and also set up the event cache. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  5. I screwed up...I sent several people an email listing the event date as the 22nd when in fact it should have been the 26th. I apologize. I have ordered 10 additional shirts and trash bags for the event. I'm also talking with Cathleen from Palmetto Pride to get things organized. I need a role call. Thanks! Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  6. update- I emailed Palmetto Pride after the park dept failed to respond. In case you don't know, they are part of the Govenors council on litter. I'll post back when I know more. Team Wolf Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  7. Has anyone using this also used the MrSid viewer fromLizardtech? I have been experimenting with the MrSid program and LOVE it. If this other is better I am in BIG trouble. I'm glad I just ordered that 80g HD! But seriously, I'm curious before I download another program over this blasted dial up what the differences are. I can tell you the Lizard Tech software is completely free, and I got local pictures from my Dept of Nat Resources site! Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  8. I have sent a basic request for contact info to SC Parks & Rec to see who we need to coordinate thru. As soon as I hear from them, I will post back here. Any quesations, contact me @ cwtompkins@msn.com Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  9. If you can give me the coord of the spot, it may turn out to be our centrl location once some more have responded. Lets see what pops up. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  10. Anyone from Coastal SC interested, I started a roll call here:SC Coastal Earth Day Gathering Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus

  12. I would like to propose a lowcountry get together for April 26th like Jeremy Irish suggested here.: Cache in trash out for Earth Day. Can I get a roll call for volunteers? We'll decide where to do this after a head count to find a central spot for all involved Thanks in advance. Team Wolf Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  13. When I was in the Air Force, we learned to march and make our heels "thump" with each step. When using this technique in the woods, most wildlife will vacate the area. This is really true for snakes and such that "feel" vibrations. For those animals that don't move, DO NOT make direct eye contact unless you are really up to the challenge. The best thing to do is go around, without exposing your backside. I often carry a firm walking stick with me and always have my pocket knife. Preparedness is the key, and I was not a Boy Scout! 14. What's the longest distance for a multicache? I am currently working on one that will be 95 miles along a trail here in SC. We plan on biking the entire thing. This trail is not complete yet, when done it will be 450 miles. I hope to cache the whole thing. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  15. Wow!this has got to be the longest time for a reply...or at least darn close. I didn't have anything specifically planned out. I think the coastal area of SC is small enough for all of us to travel. Any ideas would be apprieciated. I would love to do some of the things we read about here. Perhaps we should plan a spring get totgether to see what kind of support we have. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  16. We are currently in the planning stages of a massive multi cache along the Palmetto Trail. The section we are looking at is 95 miles long and runs from Poinsett state park in Sumter to Awendaw. We are planning on mountain biking over a couple or three days and placing caches along the way. If anyone is interested in joining us or has any advice, feel free to email me @ cwtompkins@msn.com as well as posting here. Ultimately we want to do the whole trail.Once it is complete, it should be over 400 miles long! . Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  17. Sound reasonable to me. We had a gathering last year in Charleston. Since then I have been a little inactive. Its time to change that. Lets see how many are interested and then choose a central spot based on everyone's location. Keep me posted or email me @ cwtompkins@msn.com Talk to you soon! 20. Frank, you can do a couple of things to find caches along your route. You can look up zip codes on the hide-n-see a cache pg. You can also just chose a state and plot you route from there. There is an identify button at the top of the state map pg that will link you to the cache of choice. Just click the button and then one of the flags on the page. From there, chooses a cache and then you can link to nearest caches from that one. Kinda of long and confusing I know, but once you do it a time or two its pretty easy. Good Luck Team Wolf Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  21. Would it be possible to get Benchmarks added to the type of cache list on the pocket query page? I just printed out 50 pgs of Benchmark info and would much rather just send it to may Palm and GPSr. BTW... I really like the pocket query feature and have had no problems using it. 22. Greetings from a fellow SC cacher! Look at the Meridian Marine edition from Magellan. It might be closer to $300 but it has the features you are looking for. Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus

  24. I have a Magellan Meridian (the basic brown one) and love it. I have a hunting buddy with a Etrex. I found the Magellan to be easier to use. I was toying with his and spent about half the day learning how to use it. The Magellan just kind of makes sense. Of course reading the instructions on the Etrex would have made it easier. I also have found that the reception is excellent. I very seldom loose sat lock, even when down in the swamps. The platinum should be even better. My only gripe is the way it chews up batteries. Good luck Si quando audius mihi infremus, tum videlicet quoque tardus
  25. First of all, I am both a hunter and a geocacher. I think most hunters are pretty safe about looking before they shoot. Nonetheless, mistakes happen every year. I refuse to call them accidents, because they can be avoided. I think the bigger issue is the hunters getting frustrated and feeling like their time is being encroached upon. SO the question becomes how to keep everybody happy. The only answer is common sense. Don't go in if it is obvious a hunter is present. If you do, wear orange and DONT be sneeky. We don't want anyone getting hurt and we certainly don't want to start a turf war and lose a valuable spot to cache. The hunters do fund most of the bill on public management land and their voice could certainly be loud. If you are unsure if an area is open for hunting, check out your state DNR page. Here in South Carolina, the season runs from Aug 15 to Jan 1. However, deifferent sections open and close at different times during the season and Sunday hunting on public land is illegal.
