  1. What keeps me going after 2100 finds is the same thing that got me started in the first place. The type of hide, container, puzzle ect changes but what really get's me going is the thrill of the hunt. There are still so many places that I haven't seen or would never see if it weren't for Geocaching that it keeps me going. Yes I occassionally get burnt out on the film container in a lamp post hide but then there is the cache along side a busy major highway where a cacher gets me 25 feet off the road to see a Historic Ruin in the Middle of Daytona Beach that is passed all the time without anyone ever seeing it that makes the hunt worth continuing.

  2. There have been 4 or 5 groups who have contacted us asking preliminary questions about GW4. They have asked about clarification of some of the information we asked about and about GW3 itself. I think everyone who attended GW3 understood the "it's all about the numbers" Woodstock was began as a celebration for cachers by cachers and we hope that tradition continues. One thing that Joe emphasized to us and we feel like we carried through with and we will ask the next group to emphasize is the laid back nature of the event. The "numbers" can be what you want it to be it is simply a choice of what you want caches, friends, food , travel bugs.

I know all the organizations that have contacted us will do a fine job and we know that GW4 will be bigger and better than this year. No decisions have been made and we continue to look forward to hearing from as many groups as possible. As Trippy states it will take a lot of work and planning to put on this event so we will get a decison to the interested groups as soon as we have given everyone an oppurtunity to reply with their desire. We are hoping to have submittals by the end of June so we can have a decision made by mid-July.

  3. I know there will be a numerous amount of comments from numeorus cachers everyone is welcome to submit their proposals to host the event. Everyone will be given due consideration with no preconcieved notions of what the event should look like. PLease try to keep this thread on topic. If you care to support your area and give the reason why your area should host the event we welcome all comments. If someone wants to start another thread on what GeoWoodstock should be that its another topic for discussion altogether.

  4. A selection committee has been formed to accept proposals to host GW4, We have heard from some folks who have expressed a general interest in hosting GW4 next year but the time has come to discuss specifically who is interested and how much they are interested. The primary purpose and discussion involved in this thread is Where and Who should host GW4 next year? The committee has established the following list of questions we would like to have answered in the means of a formal proposal submitted by email to the committee. Our purpose is to be able to make an informed decision and be able to judge all interested groups on the same criteria. We want to see GW4 continue to grow and be as successful as the previous Woodstock events.

Please use the following questions as a guideline for your proposals:

1 The Name and Size of your organization

2 The experience your organization has with putting on events (please specify size of events)

3 The date you think you would want to host GW4

4 A preliminary layout for the event ie a basic schedule of events

5 The cache density of the immediate area.5, 10,20 miles radius

6 Any ideas on how you propose to pay to host the event.

All submittals can be sent to thefederation@joimail.com and I will forward them to the committee there is no deadline for submitting proposals but we would like to get initial proposals within the next 3 to 4 weeks. After that we will follow up with more specific questions and hopefully have a decision made by mid to end July. While we appreciate any comments supporting the groups that submit proposals in this forum we will only consider those groups who have actually submitted a formalized proposal to the committee. I have asked the forum Moderators to help as much as possible in keeping this thread on topic and not letting it become a free for all discussion. Please feel free to support your group or area but please try to keep the thread on topic.

NEFGA would like to offer our services and any assistance we can to the next group who gets GW4. If you have any questions in preparation for your proposals please feel free to email me and I will get you an answer as quickly as possible.

  5. Just as a side note here I have personally cached with Geo Pirate and Team Huskie and they have some experience with this type of caching. They also hold the record for most caches in 24 hrs in Germany. I believe he told me it was 102 or something along those lines in a much less cache dense area.

Having worked with some of the behind the scenes planning for GeoPirate and Team Huskie prior to the run I can say that that the Beaches run that was refered to was also the first 12 hours of the World Record Run. That being said there are hours of planning that goes into a run like this nothing is left to chance.

One other thing that is helpful on a run like that is all the cache maint that goes into preparation for Geowoodstock so the cache logs are dry , caches are in place and usually guarnteed to be there.

This run consisted of one driver and one navigator/ record keeper and GeoPirate and Team Huskie. I also know from taking to the team after the run that they had about a 14% dnf rate on caches so yes they did have dnf's.

  6. I just wanted to say thank you for all the kind words. We will be doing a post event wrapup in the first published issue of Today's Cacher. The biggest and most important number to those of us in NEFGA is this we had over 530 cachers attend and not a one of them went home hungry. We fed all those cachers from a buffet feeding line and served them all in under an hour. Now that is an accomplishemnt.

  7. The Germans may have look rested and refreshed at GW3 but I can tell you I have never seen a team that caches as hard as these guys do. Since they have arrived in Jacksonville they have cached everyday they have been here. There goal after the record run was to hit 55 caches a day average for every day they were here. So far I have seen and talked to them in many different areas of North Florida and had the privelege of caching with them on 1 of those days. The day I was with them we hit 85 caches in about 11 hours with an hour for lunch. these guys have all the bells and whistles when it comes to electronics. If you ever get the privelelge to cache with them they are great people and great friends.

  8. The Happenings leading up to GeoWoodstock III kicked off yesterday and ended today with a New World Record being set in Jacksonville again. The German team of GeoPirate and Team Huskie completed 263 caches in 24 hours in the Jacksonville area. I am sure they are getting some much needed rest and relaxation now but for anyone attending GW3 this coming weekend a new mark has been set.

  9. Just by way of information Jeremy is aware of the problem and is working on it. Just so others are aware each week the web site is hitting a new record number of posts. As the sport continues to grow we all have to work with the system. I can't speak to specifics because it is above my simple mind but I know Jeremy has a number of areas he is working on to try and help with the situation. As Pika said wait until Monday when the site is not so bogged down and log your finds then.

  10. and from that quote your approver is hostile? Many times as approvers we send requests for more information. We sometimes ask for clarifiaction on certain aspects of a cache. We even sometimes outright say no no to a cache but none of those in my opinion makes a reviewer hostile. Was there something else that you didn't share with us or were you simply upset beacuse of that one statement.

  11. I believe the cachers of Florida will gladly step up to the plate and produce a coin which represents our great state at the appropiate time. It is not that we haven't stepped up to do it we have just set up priorties to when we would do it. As me of you may not know we are currently in the process of setting up a statewide geocaching association. as soon as we have some structure in place so we can can a represenative voice from cachers across Florida things like coins and other promotional items for Florida Cachers will follow.

  12. I haven't got to post here for awhile so I thought I would drop by and post a few updates for anyone who is watching this thread. GWIII is coming along great we currently have over 250 people registered for the event and we expect to top 500 or more by the actual event. We have been getting some great exposure for caching as well as GeoWoodstock. Wired Magazine a National Technology magazine will be doing an article in their May Calendar section about Geocaching and Woodstock. We have been contacted by National Geographic Explorer as well about the event and possible coverage.

We have 2 items which may be of interest to the caching community we have GWIII t-shirts and GWIII commerative coins available on our website at GeoWoodstockIII The sale of the tshirts will fund the event in it's entirety. The shirts will have the GWIII logo on the front and the Groundspeak logo on the back. The coins will be trackable through GC.Com for details on cost or to purchase visit the website.

Also we would like to thank Groundspeak for agreeing to set up a store at the event this year. We will have a select set of merchandise from Groundspeak which will be available so please help show your support for Groundspeak and GC.Com by coming by the store and purchasing your merchandise minus the shipping charges.

The caches runs are being posted on our website as well using bookmark lists so you can see the actual caches involved and plan accordingly.

There will be a full scale itenarary in May's issue of Today's Cacher Magazine so please be sure to make a copy so you won't miss out on three days of fun and adventure at GWIII

    Thanks

  13. To answer a few of the Questions about GeoWoodstock 2006 I will try to give you a bit of history. The First Woodstock was held as a way for the Top Cachers to get together and meet. GeoWoodstock was the brainchild of JoGps and a few others as a way to get the top 10 cachers together since that time it has continued to grow. After last years event and subsequent choosing of Jacksonville for this year there have been some discussions between JoGps and others who have particapated in the events in the past and currently and we have tried to come up with a process where GeoWoodstock and it's tradition can be carried on. I was expecting a formal announcement from Joe about this as well but basically the selection process will be done after GWIII this year. One of the stipulations that we have discussed and I think we have agreed upon is for a group to host the next year they have to attend the previous year's event. To be able to see and understand what they are taking on and to get some sense and spirit of the event. I know Joe has received some queries about hosting GW4 as well as I have. Continue to watch this forum for more details.

  14. Hi everyone not a total newbie to GSAK but not an indepth user either I use it mostly for the datbase function in my role as an admin here at GC.Com I just downloaded version5.0.4 and now anytime I try to drag and drop or open the folder option to bring a new GPX file into GSAK it wants to restart itself. It gave me a couple of error messages which I let it dump to Clyde but I just wondered if anyone else experienced this problem and what maybe up. I thought the one database I was using maybe too large but it does this on a new empty databse. Everything else seems to work I just can't import gpx files anymore.

    PLease Help

  15. I saw the header and for that topic and started to take a look at it and then I got off to something else. One thing that continually amazes is the fact these are Geocaching forums and people get upset when the moderators try to apply guidelines established by the web site. First everyone complained they didn't have off topic forums now they have them and people continue to complain because they can't post off topic items here in the general forums. Sorry folks this is a web site about geocaching. Maybe if we stuck to geocaching related topics there might be a little less angst here in the forums.

  16. Lynn and Lucy We are all Praying for you from the FloridaCaching community. We have posts up on both of our sites here in Florida and there are many dedicated praying Christian Cachers here who are lifting you and your family up right now. Just remeber the Lord is with you through these times and the Prayers of a righteous man will be heard.
