  1. That's just caching. If you put it out there people are free to take it. You could wait til the last minute before you go caching with nephew then run out and put something in cache just before you both go. Don't log it til after.
  2. I glued something to a plastic lid. First I used gorilla glue, but after getting banged around a few times it came off. Then I tried silicone calking but that too came off. Then I drove in a couple of screws and that worked. I wonder how well screws would hold in that modeling clay, especially if it gets knocked around..--Cute container, hope you are able to find something that works.
  3. I might look into this. Thanks for the suggestion. Considered it. Thought cutouts from aluminum pie tins might be good. Haven't figured out how to burnish the edges so they aren't sharp. It was suggested to me a while back to go to a plant nursery and get some "plant tags" to mark waypoints/turns and such. They're just copper (I think) tags about 3-4" long with a wire at one end. You can engrave coords into them and hang them in a tree or whatever inconspicuous spot you can find. They're very thin and can be engraved VERY easily.
  4. Ah, at last, a use for those things. I'll keep an eye out at yard sales- don't think you can still buy them.
  5. Since postal/zip codes are ambiguous, perhaps the search form should auto suggest candidates when only a zipcode is entered as it does with city names. If I enter Rome into the search box, it shows a select list with "Rome, Lazio", "Rome, New York", "Rome, Pennsylvania"...so that I can select which "Rome" I want. If I enter my zipcode, followed by "United States" it returns a list of caches in my area. If I only enter my zipcode it shows caches in France. If I enter my zipcode followed by France I get a list of caches from Argentina. I typed in United States after my zip code and it worked- I'm back in New York- Thanks.
  6. I use the old one too and I still end up in France.
  7. Just trying to write out coordinates to a multi. Some don't come with a container. Why paper? Why not something etched in a aluminum, copper, or even tin tag? Considered it. Thought cutouts from aluminum pie tins might be good. Haven't figured out how to burnish the edges so they aren't sharp.
  8. Just trying to write out coordinates to a multi. Some don't come with a container.
  9. Does anyone know of a pen whose writing will not fade in the elements? I tried regular pens and permanent markers, but they faded away after a few months- even when I laminated them.
  10. When I type in my zip code at geocaching.com I get a list of geocaches in France. I'm in New York. What gives? Anybody else having this problem?
  11. A trackable can be anything. Some trackables have a dog tag attached, some just have a number on it. Any swag/anything you pick up from a cache that has any kind of number on it should be checked out here at geocaching.com to see if it is a trackable. If you are in doubt you can always check back here in the forums for feedback to see if they can tell you anything about where it may have come from. Trackables aren't meant to be kept. Trackables go missing, coins especially. There are those who collect the coins even though they shouldn't. Trackables also go missing by people who stumble on a cache and don't know what it is, but take what's inside. Trackables go missing due to forgetfulness or they were taken then lost. They also go missing by cachers who took them and don't bother to find another cache to place them in. It's sad when they go missing because someone here is waiting to see a report about its travels. Hopefully your coins stay in circulation, but I've also had them disappear rather quickly. My first trackable went overseas and I received logs in foreign languages which was cool(before it went missing). I always try to send out really fun trackables that people might enjoy finding in a cache and that hopefully they will move along to another cache so that other cachers can find and enjoy them. It seems the cute trackables are more apt to disappear, but I send them out anyway because I like finding them and I hope others will do their best to see they are placed in a safe cache that is not easily stumbled upon or in an area where things don't seem to go missing . Some of the most memorable trackables I've found were a golf ball with a face carved into it by a professional carver (reported as missing), a life size plastic echidna that started it's journey from Australia (reported as missing), a Blues Brother bear (reported as missing), a purple shirt worn by one of the local mega cachers (her number of cache finds is crazy and the shirt is not going missing because she is wearing it), a tiny Coleman lantern that actually lit up, an avatar duckie that glowed in the dark....
  12. This seems like asking more from a cache owner than they should. I can understand asking the CO nicely if they might look at the log in the cache to see if someone visited the cache itself, but did not log online. To expect the cache owner to stop everything and go visit the cache is a little much. That cache could be way out of the owner's way. I also don't believe it is the cache owner's job to contact everyone who has visited the cache to see if they have the missing trackable. That is the trackable owners job as far as I'm concerned. It's a shame, but people take trackables and people who own trackables need to be aware of that. I like to send out fun trackables that I know people will enjoy finding in the cache. Makes finding a cache more fun and interesting if there is a cool trackable to find in the cache, but they go missing. Too bad people don't respect them and spoil the enjoyment for others. I've had some go missing before they even made it to another cache.
  13. A person can do whatever they want to with a cache. This game is played on the honor system and hopefully by being a member they will abide by the rules. I'll usually take out what I don't like and try to leave a cache in better condition than when I found it. I'll wipe out the dirt and moisture, remove anything I consider trash and put things in ziplock bags if it looks like the cache leaks. To me, how the next cacher finds the cache is important. I want them to have fun and finding a cache in good shape is fun. As for agenda literature, I'll ignore it if it is in good shape, not offensive, or something someone put in there because they mistook the cache for a garbage can.
  14. Well just slightly off topic, occasionally in the woods I have to go to the bathroom and being in the woods there is no bathroom so I have to go primitive. On occasion I'll wonder if there are trail cams around (especially the one time when there was string stretched out like it might have been attached to something so that the string would act as a trip wire). Those would be some interesting pictures.
  15. Sometimes it's a good location, sometimes it isn't, but it doesn't sound like you have a location problem. If my cache is near an area where a lot of people congregate, play or what ever and the cache disappears I don't usually rehide it in the same area. Having it stolen, go missing, or get destroyed is enough to tell me that I need to find a better more secluded place. The fact that this isn't the first time a cache has been taken could mean that instead of a muggle taking a cache he has stumbled upon, you might have a cache thief.
  16. One of the reviewers was kind enough to send me an unpublished cache page to which I am adding my data to use for my cache. So for now that is working. I don't know why the new method wouldn't accept my cache. It only showed one box (not 2 like some people mention above) to check to indicate that I read Groundspeak's disclaimers. There were no red notices. It moved on to the next page and there were no red notices when I clicked that either, it just didn't do anything, but as I said I am able to use the unpublished cache page so all seems to be good. There really was nothing to indicate I had a problem other than it just stopped working and wouldn't make a webpage. Perhaps if I had removed all the data I had entered (aka the saved draft)from the new method and started over fresh it would have made a difference. I don't know. I'll find out next time when I try to make another cache using that method. One feature that I do like with the new method is the map with the red circles showing all the areas not to place a cache and also the fact that you can list waypoints as virtuals or physicals.
  17. I just tried to save it with internet explorer and that didn't make any difference. I still can't seem to save anything to my profile. I guess I'm going to have to stop hiding caches.
  18. I know that. It doesn't do anything when I press save and preview. It does save it as a draft that I'm working on so I don't lose anything, but it won't save it as a webpage. I wonder about using firefox as my web browser- I cut and pasted some of the information into the cache description. When I did that it said something about security and that my web browser wouldn't allow me to do that. Then it opened a small window for me to paste the information into ( it also said to use the keyboard ctrl-x- but I didn't need to do that). I know on other webpages I've been to I sometimes have to switch to internet explorer because certain functions don't work with firefox.
  19. I put the information I had for my cache through the new system. I haven't quite got all the info I need. I will have to edit it. What I don't see that I used to see on the old form is that little box that you check to say whether or not your cache is in place. My caches are not in place. How does the reviewer know I'm not ready to have it published? I got through the form and came to the part about the reviewer notes and after that there is a button that you click that says save and preview. I click it and nothing happens. Aren't I supposed to be able to see my cache page so I can preview it? The directions also say my unpublished cache will be in my profile. There is nothing there. Before the change in methods for posting I used to be able to see a listing for my unpublished caches in my profile. Could the fact that I am using firefox instead of internet explorer be causing problems? This new method seems to save my cache as a draft. How the heck do I get it to where I can eventually publish it?
  20. It is normal. Most people don't want to work that hard or they lack the time to do it. Puzzle caches seem to appeal to certain group. Give it time, but don't expect everyone to come looking.
  21. I clicked save and preview- nothing to preview because nothing happened. I have nothing in my profile. Supposedly it is saved as a draft.
  22. OK I got past the "list stages page" without problems and up to where I write the description for the cache. After jumping through some hoops I was able to paste the instructions I had previously typed up into the box. (Could the fact that I'm using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer be causing problems. I've found some things don't work 100 percent with Firefox.) I pushed the symbol for a bar to be inserted in my text thinking it was for line spacing. I couldn't get rid of the bar. Then I did...when everything disappeared. I was discouraged so I typed in some nonsense that I figured I'd edit later. I just wanted to get to the part where I created a cache page and edit it from there. I got through the size and ratings and came to the reviewer message page. I pushed save and preview and... nothing. I typed in "where do I edit this page", pushed save and preview and...still nothing. Everything I did seems to be there when I go back to the hide a cache page, but it's not listed as a cache in progress in my profile like they used to be with the old system. I suspect if I turn off the computer everything will disappear or I won't know how to find it.
  23. Thanks, that worked. I typed in the coordinates and it said that area was unavailable. I can see that I am too close to another cache. Figured it out.
  24. Where they wanted me to list the coordinates for the first stage I typed in N42.27.296 W075.03.899 (not real-just an example). It said it didn't understand this and didn't give any example of how to do it.
