  1. I have a Nokia 5800. So you really can navigate without using an internet connection? I use my home wifi but rarely pay Vodafone the 50p per day to access WAP. This is wonderful news if I can use my phone as sat nav when I don't have access to the nuvi, or for caches.
  2. After finding and moving on innumerable TBs you'd think I'd know better..... I placed one in a cache today but when I came to log the cache I forgot to drop it off. I went back to edit my log but the list of TBs weren't there below the log screen. I tried the TB's page but there is no drop off option. What can I do or am I missing the obvious?
  3. I definitely give the 5800 a big I love it! Today I took some excellent photos when out caching, almost as good as my camera. I have recently discovered podcasting so I have set it to automatically download the ones I want every day or week. The organiser is invaluable so I generally know what i am doing. There is a great keyboard so texting is so quick. The wifi was so useful when on holiday in Spain recently. And it also makes phone calls! I really think it has something to suit everyone regardless of age or lifestyle. I still haven't used it for caching as I already have an Oregon and a PDA.
  4. It wasn't the same gps - I checked the serial number. But it looks as new as my other one. I must say I hoped for a new one from reading other people's experiences! If that was me and got it back with a refurbished sticker I would be wanting to know if it was the same GPS that I sent them. Otherwise they have replaced what could have been a new GPS with a used GPS.
  5. I got a replacement Oregon in the post yesterday only 6 days after posting the faulty one . It had a refurbished sticker on it so I guess it's not brand new. But it loaded gpx files first time. I am so glad I contacted Garmin.
  6. What a great job to have! What are their caching names? I'm curious...
  7. No, I never do now, not since Vista. XP always nagged me. Must look for the icon - good point!
  8. Thanks. I have downloaded geocaching live. Now to learn how to use it! I found a useful google group. If its symbian based I would recomend: Would recomend: SmartGPX: Free View Ranger: Pay bt OS Maps Geocaching Live: Free Geocache Navigator: No longer free Google Maps: Free (using Smart GOX you can get your caches to appear on the maps/ sat views). Maybe a compas app so you know where north is from the sun... Any more suggestions I would be intrested in! Hope it helps....
  9. I am temporarily without a gps until I get a replacement Oregon. However I do have a Nokia 5800 which I know can be used for caching. Pleaase can anyone point me in the direction of easy to follow instructions for using it? Do I have to download a caching application?
  10. I phoned the nice man at Garmin today. He came up with suggestions that I had already tried. Oddly enough when I gave him the serial number he told me to send it back. I think maybe there was a duff batch of them.
  11. Thank you Chris. I have just tried copying and pasting my latest local PQ of 500 caches. I also deleted everything else that was in the gpx file. On powering it up I can only see a file for Bucks which I had 3 weeks ago and deleted days later and an old one for my area - again one that had been deleted. The one I have just copied and pasted is not there. I also have problems turning it on sometimes - I have to disconnect the batteries then try again.
  12. I am seriously wondering whether i have a rogue Oregon... I have mentioned on the forum before that it sometimes doesn't load gpx files first time round. A few days ago we were off caching and i have a new PQ. I duly put it into GSAK then exported the gpx file. It then took me 6 attempts to transfer into my Oregon! Before anyone asks I have got the latest firmware, know which folder to use etc etc. Each time it showed on my computer that the file was present. On doing a search on the Oregon for specific caches they were missing. I did a reset by holding the top left corner down when turning on. I erased user data but that didn't help either. I was surprised to see however that a previous file which I had deleted was still there. I tried different usb sockets on the laptop then eventually the file was loaded. Do you think i should complain to Garmin? Does any other Oregon owner have this problem and if so what is the solution? Please.... before I jump on it!
  13. I ended up getting a replacement Mio from Handtech I got a P350 as I no longer need wifi. At present they are selling reconditioned ones for £97.64 with a year's guarantee. I am very happy with mine, especially as I only had to slot in my memory card and do little else to get going again!
  14. Mine came today via my neighbour. who had taken delivery. I ordered it Monday and it was delivered by DHL on Tuesday. Excellent service, product and price!
  15. I have just learned that from reading these posts. I couldn't understand why my waypoint memory was full when I have been careful to delete any gpx files I no longer needed. I now now I had months' worth of waypoints still there. Surely Garmin could associate child waypoints with their parent caches to make it a more user friendly geocaching unit?
  16. You are correct, that is my understanding too. The GPX files have to be in the \GARMIN\GPX directory in the internal storage or on the MicroSD card in the same named directory. Either way the 200, 300, etc can only handle a maximum of 2000 caches. You can get round that limitation by exporting caches as POIs instead. I do this with all caches I have found and placed. Works very well. To do this I use GSAK. Furthermore, make sure you've upgraded the firmware to the latest release (3.20) as this solves a number of issues and adds lots of new functionality. Regards, Martin Yes I am putting them in the Garmin / GPX folder on the internal storage and they show there while I have the unit connected to the PC. Yesterday I had my East Anglia file in the same location. When I arrived in Bucks the EA file was still there but the Bucks file wasn't, yet they both showed to be in the same folder on the Oregon. It's impossible to check until you get near to a place whether they are there. Or is it? I also find that the waypoint memory shows to be full. I don't see how as it has only a very small gpx file loaded. Or don't the child waypoints get deleted when you delete the gpx file? I do find this unit to be frustrating. I have upgraded the firmware by the way. Maybe I have a rogue unit?
  17. That is just what I needed to know but now I know I have a problem with my Oregon 300. Several times I have loaded a gpx file containing caches for an area I was off to visit and on arrival found the caches weren't there - despite showing on my computer that they were. Yesterday was such a day. We travelled 100 miles to Bucks to do a series and no caches on the gps. Luckily I had a backup as I had also loaded them in cachemate on my Mio. I thought maybe the memory was full - but apparently not. Today I emptied all the caches from the Oregon then dragged across a local gpx file. Again nothing though the file showed up that it was there on my PC. So I tried again this time copying and pasting - with success. I also have problems turning it on sometimes. It hangs up so I have to disconnect the batteries then try again. Should I contact Garmin?
  18. I've ordered one too - many thanks for the link!
  19. I've just tried that - I downloaded a cache, right clicked then selected open containing folder. The gpx file then appeared in my geocaching folder in Documents. Thanks!
  20. YES!! I didn't know about Garmin Communicator but it has made all the difference! I used send to gps straight from the cache page and hey presto, it's there. I can't use gpx exchange as whatever I download when I click on the exe file it will only open in GSAK. This has made such a difference. I had even started printing out cache pages again for one off caches. Thank you, lovely people.
  21. When I had my old Legend I found it really easy to download individual waypoints from GSAK. With the Oregon you can't do that, but have to download a gpx file instead. That's all very well but if I come across a few caches I want to do in a different area and don't want to bother doing a PQ I am a bit stuck! I've tried downloading the gpx file from the cache page but can only open it in GSAK. I would prefer to download it to my desktop for a quick transfer but can't manage to do that. I'm using Vista. Can anyone help? reading this again it sounds really muddled but I hope someone understands what I am trying to do!
  22. There is a wonderful cache in our local area which was set by former cachers who moved out of the area. Having looked at their profile they no longer visit gc.com and don't reply to emails which makes me think their address linked to gc.com may no longer be valid. In that case how could the cache be adopted by someone who has a keen interest in its welfare? Thanks in advance for any help.
  23. Where did you send it to? Mitac UK? That may be MUCH cheaper! I do have a power monkey.
  24. Which Ipaq model please? Does it have a loop thing so it can be hung around the neck with a neck strap?
