  1. Found it... thanks. I have two! 1 for 10 finds, and one for becoming a premium member! Yah! I'll prob. b terribly stingy with these those. I prob. would be if I had a thousand to give away. It's gonna take a LOT more than I've seen already to earn one of them suckers from me! LOL
  2. That's a good idea... posting a note instead of DNF. Thanks!
  3. Maybe I don't have any yet and that's why I don't see them listed anywhere???
  4. Wow. OK. Feeling guilty and bummed. I am not what one would consider a techie and clueless when it comes to a lot of computer/programming lingo. Sometime during signing up with geocaching.com I came across the knowledge of being able to download an app. to my Android to aide me in my geocaching adventure. I'm so confused... I thought it was from this site or one of the other sites affiliated with it, otherwise I wouldn't even have known about it. It's important to me to play a sport/game in the utmost sportsmanlike manner, so now I'm feeling kind of guilty and bummed that I've been using this app. since the day I signed up. I'm glad I'm only so far into the game, so I can from this point on start playing the game right. I'm wondering if I shouldn't go as far as deleting all of my caches I've found so far and start over??? :0) I have another GPS device, but will have to familiarize myself with it better to start using it. And I just paid $9.99 for the Geocaching Groundspeak Inc. app., so I think I'm good to go. Thanks everyone for your help.
  5. Newbie wondering if this is true. If so, why was the app. even created and made accessible then?
  6. Was out today and tried to find a cache with my four year old and realized a ways into poison ivy invested ground coverage that one would have to be saved for another day and with one of my teenagers instead :0) Anyway, I kind of wanted to share the experience and was going to log it as not found, but had a thought that maybe logging something as "Not Found" is more for the purpose of notifying the cache owner that it may have gone missing. So... just wondering... "To share or to inform"? Thanks
  7. Thank you niraD. I did think I read and reread the guidelines, but that was a more detailed version of them.... I think. Not sure, I've saturated my brain in the last couple days reading as much as I can on geocaching. :0) After reading that, I'm pretty sure it WOULD be considered defacing property... so back to the drawing board! LOL Thanks again. :0)
  8. Thanks so much for your response. I have read and re-read guidelines, yet still I question. :0) I'm wondering if I were given the parks permission, if I screwed a ceramic plate and chain to the side of a fallen tree across a creek would be considered defacing public property. I didn't think it would be at first, but maybe it is. I just didn't see how doing that would be defacing public property anymore than digging a hole to put a wood post and some concrete in to serve as a post for cache box, which I've seen done. Thanks, and as far as coordinates, I think I'll just have the coordinates on cache page take cachers directly to the box that will have a combo lock, which the cache page will have the info to figure code out. Then in the compartment that opens will have the treasure map that will lead them to the submerged box. In the submerged box, will be a code to open the lock on the other compartment to the original cache by the parking lot. I figure if you visit this place, you should take a stroll down the creek to fully appreciate this parks beauty :0) and you'd have to return to the parking lot eventually anyway???
  9. OK, I'm a little confused here....you say they will find an X on the ground but the cache will be submerged in the water? First, how is there an "X" on the ground? Is it something that already exists at the location or are you planning to paint a big "X" out there? Because I think that would be rejected by the reviewers. Second, if the "X" is on the ground then where does the water come into play? Seems mighty complicated for a first cache. I'd suggest you read the guidelines for placing a cache carefully. Then read them again. The rest of the the idea with the keys and everything seems pretty cool but where is the "X", on the ground or in the water? LOL... I know it wasn't all that detailed how I described it. Sorry :0) I actually wrote a whole message explaining it in complete detail, but decided to start over and leave certain "clues" out, just in case someone in my area ends up reading this post so when they visit my cache it would then be spoiled for them. LOL Over thinker sometimes. But, I'll explain... there is a really great park nearby that not even many locals know about. The map was going to take them down the creek a ways where a large tree has fallen over the creek and I was going to ask the park if I could screw a ceramic plate on the side of it in the center of the creek that has an x on it. On the map was going to be a clue about a chain. I was going to bolt a chain under the ceramic plate and have a waterproof container attached to the chain. :0) I decided to alleviate the key idea and have the coordinates on the cache page take them directly to the cache by the parking lot. I'm still thinking about the submerged container. I do not want the entry log to be located there, because it would be to difficult for the cacher and the log could end up ruined. But I really liked the idea, so I think I'm going to have the code to the combination lock in it, so they have to return to the original cache by the parking lot to open the other compartment where the log will be located.
  10. Thanks for the advice. I can see the stress level go up when it comes to a newbie hiding a cache, which I totally understand that it's with good reason. I didn't plan on hiding one until I have more experience under my belt, but I did want to start building the box and getting permission from the park, etc. so I was trying to do as much homework as possible along the way. The advice on keys helps. If I alleviate the key, then I will also alleviate there being a need for so many steps which I feared cachers wouldn't like. As experienced cachers, I have another question for you. When I think about placing a cache it get's my wheels turning on how to be creative in challenging the cacher mentally and/or physically... but also with the understanding that it should be hidden in a location that offers more than a shrub in some field; a place they will appreciate having visited. But as far as wanting to challenge the cacher, is that not really the primary joy in geocaching for SOME cachers, where my thinking maybe "off" and maybe I should just stick to finding them? Because, honestly, that's just how my mind works. I wouldn't enjoy just placing a cache somewhere, even if it were a place I would like to share with others. It would have to be creative. It's just... me. :0) Hopefully that inquiry makes since.
  11. It helps to understand the reasons for the rules. The "never buried" rule is really a "no digging" rule. Land managers don't want people digging up their parks and other open spaces. The last I checked, no one needs to dig up a lake to pull a cache out of it. That makes since... except I'd let someone dig up my yard to find one!! LOL
  12. Absolutely no offense taken. I completely understand and def. planned on doing all the research needed before hiding a cache, including going out and finding similar listed caches. In all honesty, I can already foresee that the caches around here won't be like what I'll be listing to compare it to, which is why I wanted to post here for suggestions. As far as concern of starting out all gung-ho (sp?) and fizzing out... totally understand the concern and aggravation this must bring on to the sport. Funny thing is... if you just knew me you wouldn't have the same concerns. I am totally shocked that no one has told me about geocaching until last week. It's soooo my thing. I have been making treasure hunts for friends, family, neighbors since I was like 12 yrs. old. Not just treasure hunts... outlandish treasure hunts! LOL The hints to each step being written in calligraphy, on paper with burnt edges and sealed with wax, and written in riddle form, that lead to a treasure map most often painted on a tea stained, burnt and torn piece of canvas. LOL My mind just... works that way. I can't explain... honestly can't explain how much this means to me to be a part of this. I have five children (15,14, 13, 10, and 4) and have been wanting to find a way to stay connected to my teenagers, keep them off the dang video games, and just GET THEM OUTSIDE! LOL Anyway, I took my 14 yr. old son, who is just like me, for the first hunt and he loved... loved... loved it! Now my other kids can't wait to go with me next time. I believe this will be a part of me for a life time... cuz hopefully I have lots of grandbabies one day to share this with. Thanks again for your reply. Greatly appreciated. I've listed a new topic with a better description of how the cache I want to do will be set up if you'd like to look it over and help me figure out the best way to list it in the future.
  13. Thanks everyone for your suggestions/help. I thought about how I want the cache to be set up and have started a new topic with better details on how the cache will be set up. If anyone would like to read it and help me figure out what would be the best way to list it, I would really appreciate it. Thanks
  14. This will be my first cache to list and I really wanted to be creative.... so I'm not sure if it falls under all the guidelines, if it's too "outlandish", and how to classify it (as separate caches- one traditional, one unknown; as a multi-cache ???) The coordinates will lead you to a parking lot of a park where the cache is hidden nearby. On the cache page will be a hint to find the caches location. The cache will be a two compartment box. The top of the box will have a lock on it. On the cache page will be a riddle on how to solve the combination to the lock. Inside will be a key and copies of a treasure map. The treasure map will be drawn out with a legend that will explain that they'll need to walk in approx. one foot steps in whatever direction the map tells them. When they get to an x on the map they'll need to look for an x on the ground. Here they will find a submerged, waterproof compartment with a treasure chest that opens using the key. In the treasure chest will have a riddle to figure out the code to the original caches third compartment lock, which will contain the entry log and a very nice prize for the FTF. I realize it's a lot of steps, but because the cache contains a key, which I will have copies of in the box (just in case), but still it is a bit more expensive to replace, so I needed the cacher to have to return to the original cache with the key in hopes they would more likely return it. What do you guys think? Again, I'm a newbie. Will cachers not really like so many steps? How would this be listed?
  15. Yes... I'm a newbie... but honestly I've tried to do my homework! I'd like to hide a cache and I have read all that I can find throughout the site and still have a few questions. My hopes are to get permission from this really nice park around here that not too many people know about and have the first part of the cache be in the parking lot where they should park. In this cache I would like to have instructions that will have riddles and a map on how to get to the final cache. Question 1: does a log book go into both caches? Question 2: I'm assuming this falls into the category of multi-cache, but should it be classified as anything else? Question 3: When finding a multi-cache, should you really not log the cache as being "found" until both stages/parts are found? If that's the case, I've already screwed up on logging my finds into the site :0( Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
  16. That's great they can be submerged. Wonder why they can't be buried??? Thanks for info. I looked at Blondiiiii's photos; I only saw one with water, so are you talking about walking across the wood posts in the water to find a key? Either way that photo was great! I hope to come across a cache like that! I'm just... that type a girl. :0) Tried out for Fear Factor a few times... never made it on the show. LOL 'Member that show? Thanks again! Trendy Treasurers
  17. Thanks so much BlueDeuce for the "Markwell" :0) It answered a lot.... just what I was looking for.
  18. During the process of registering to the site and downloading the geocaching app. to my Android I came across where it gave me a code to register my device. How do you do this and why? Thanks.
  19. Man... I was just starting to get used to all the "bff", and "idk" from the kiddos...LOL and now I'm in the dark again! Anyone feel like shedding some light on what all the acronyms used on this site and in log books are? Any help so greatly appreciated! Trendy Treasurers
  20. Hello to all. New to geocaching and I am so enthralled in the whole concept. I have been making treasure hunts for other people since I was a kid and just couldn't believe it when I came across geocaching only days ago. I'm wanting to create a site and anyone that knows me knows... I'd do it up right! I'm carefully reading as much material as I can to educate myself before placing a cache somewhere, but everyone who knows me also knows... it HAS to be outrageously creative. :0) So, I want to know if the cache can be submerged in a lake and retrieved by pulling a chain? So far, all I've read is that they can't be buried. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Smiles, Trendy Treasurers
