  1. 11:30pm, 12" of snow already, more falling, icy roads, subzero without the windchill, and looking for " a white bucket under the only white pine in the area." 1) wrong coordinates 2) no clue the difference between white pine, scotch pine, etc. 3) had brother-in-law with me 4)cant stand brother-in-law Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache.
  2. Very punny Leprechauns. I think you have more than just the pot you keep your gold in. Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache.
  3. Interesting. In this area, you could use gps tracking to recover the sheep when the red-neck pervs try to, uh, never mind. Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache.
  4. In our area, there are a lot of cachers with a signature item they leave. I'm currently trying to come up with one of my own, but was just wondering what others found interesting, worth collecting, or annoying. 5. Yep, tacky. Would not appreciate it if it offended someone in my caching group, and had to listen to them whine about it all day. My kid seeing it? Kids see an Herbal Essence commercial lately? (By the way, if anyone knows someone responsible for those commercials, please smack them with a heavy object for me.) How about a movie ad that made you cringe. Chances are, if they make any deal at all about it, they know too much already. Yep, it would at least have a pair of shorts if I found it. Cant stand being shown up, even if it is a stuffed monkey. 6. Hmm, I was going to suggest nude caching so the answer was obvious, but them thorns hurt ! The thong idea has merit, if the fabric construction is durable enough to resist hostile plant and /or insect attacks. 7. is off the subject, but hey nincehelser, whats with the picture of you and that big wood in your hand? Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache.
  8. after alot of searching I opted to use the clue from the cache page. Somewhat like kissing your sister, but it kept me from going home with my tail tucked! Man, that has to be the funniest log I've read yet. Thanks for the laugh RITTY. But, I agree. I do bring the hint in case I cant find it. My Magellan has put me right on top of caches, and other times I cant get the signal to quit bouncing me around an area 100 yards across. There are many factors which effect your gps accuracy. Battery strenth is one of the worst on my particular unit. Topography, cloud cover, large structures, alien invasions, etc. Be sure to hold the unit pointing straight up, if you allow the antennae to drop horizontal, it REALLY messes up your reading. Someone else mentioned the lag in their Magellan reading location as well, signal strength again comes into play. As you move, you lose one satellite and aquire different ones. If you have a screen for satellite ID, you can watch this happen. Each time satellite signal changes, the unit has to re-align. this can cause drastic, but temporary mis-location. The suggestion of temporarily stopping while unit re-aligns your position is the best advice. When near the cache, approach the general area several times, from several directions. Look for the general "center' of the area your led to. happy caching Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache.
  9. Wow, some really good points made here ! I have recently been doing the TNLN, but it sounds reasonable to "improve" the cache for the next guy. I got really annoyed when I saw someone put out a brand new cache, with a 32meg memory card for a digital cam listed. The 1st folks there took it, and even logged that they left TURKEY TEMP POP_UPS as their trade. Ok, yes I was jealous they got there first, but I had a reasonable trade for it. Then it occurred to me, if they and the cache owner could live with that, what business is it of mine to criticize ? The card was left with no pretense of what had to be traded for it. Someone just got a very nice prize. I guess my thought is, don't loot the cache, other than that, trade nicely sounds like a good personal goal for me. happy caching all. 11. Thank you all for the amusement. I finished reading this entire subject. I started reading with the thoughts of helping, but saw it has been resolved. The amusing jibes back and forth are so reminiscent of those childhood battles in the back seat during a long trip. ( dad, shes looking at me funny, make her stop ! ) I would like to pretend I've grown up enough to be past all that, but since I'm stuck inside on a beautiful day, I'll join in the shenanigans. first off, never had a Garmin, but I love my freedom-toast, freedom fries, and, sacre-bleu mon ami, I love my Magellan. So, I shall venture a totally biased, unsubstantiated, unexplored, uninformed opinion comment that garmin MUST suck. If Garmin wishes to send me a complimentary unit so I may review its functioning, and thereby re-tract my statement ( eat my words ) and instead write a glowing review, please contact me through this column. Also I think since some Canucks are FRENCH speaking, we should boycott all Canadian bacon, known as ham to the rest of the world, and immediately erect an inefficient border system which can be crossed by large amounts of illegal immigrants daily. Happy caching to all. Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the one less traveled, and that is how I found the cache.
  12. Ah Ha ! Straight from the womb ! My son (18 months old) is one of my favorite, even if most cantankerous, caching buddies. We have made number of small cache trips, using a jogging stroller or back carrier as needs dictate. Of course, extra care and attention needs to be paid to temperature, terrain, duration, bugs, etc. We still value our trips when we have time to ourselves, but cacheing with a young one can be quite enjoyable.
  13. So far I've mostly cached, but recently my wife and I have begun finding benchmarks. I cant say I really like one more than the other, but I think I do prefer the relative solitude of caching over the public obviousness of benchmarking. The cool thing about benchmarking is how many of them there are to find, and they are more challenging in most instances.
  14. this was years ago, backpacking minister creek trail ( no pun intended ) in PA. buddies and i were camped out on the high ground, and kept hearing all this noise from the direction of the "established" camp ground near the spring. even tho it was 1.00 am, we went to investigate. besides, we were thirsty. we got near the spring, creeping as silently as we could. the valley was dotted by numerous campfires, and i dont think many pagan rituals were noisier than the commotion there. we were debating what to do, when lights started coming on all around us on this hillside. we ran as fast as we could. next day, the church retreat people came out, approximately 100 strong.we talked to a "counsellor" and asked what the heck they were doing. he simply said, just about anything.
