  1. Funny thing is, I just put the batteries back in a moment ago, and they seem to work fine. The GPS gave a full bar of health for the battery! Sam
  2. I just bought a Garmin 60CS and bought new batteries for it. After 30min of use, the batteries died. I put new ones in again, and nothing happens. Is the Garmin 60CS just a massive battery drain (despite supposedly being able to last 20hrs on new batteries), or do you guys think the batteries just expired at the store? If the batteries expired, how can I be sure that I'm getting batteries that haven't expired? TXKnight
  3. I'm afraid I pretty much tried all of this. Before even posting this question to the forums I had already used the cut paste code found on 'My Account'. Recently I've tried editing the code and reduced it be nothing more that an IMG tag (just like yours). Heck I even used yours to see if it would work! But at last, no success. The blog site I use keeps transforming the IMG tag to ".." Which is really strange when one considers all the other neat code snippets you can inlcude on this site. Thanks for your help though, TXKnight
  4. Interesting. I can't use it here on the forums. Nor does it seem to work on my blog. Hmmmm.... I like the idea of the stat bar, but where the heck can I use it? Oh well, thanks for the input. TXKnight

    Stat Bar

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but my stat bar never seems to appear. I placed the code directly into my signature on my profile, but all I get is the Gary Player quote I put on there and a white box at the bottom. Am I missing something? TXKnight
  6. Ooopss... Wrong forum. <embarassingly edits and removes post>
  7. I tend to use work gloves when caching. Not only do they help prevent pesky bug bites when sticking my hands in dark holes, but they help when I'm trying to push thorny brush aside (which seems to be everywhere). TXKnight
  8. Cool, I've definately got to try one of these level 5 terrain caches one of these days! TX Knight
  9. Just for curosities sake, if it was fairly inaccessible, how were geocachers supposed to get to it (or is that part of the mystery of finding that cache)? Cool pics by the way. Sorry that the can ended up as target practice! TXKnight
  10. I've checked there website before. Unfortunately this model is so old, the Magellan folks appeared to have archived any useful information about it (I just love how in the tech world stuff is old after being around for over half a decade). Well the batteries are low. Maybe replaceing them entirely would be a good idea. However with my GPS, when the coordinates lock, everything else still seems to work. I can navigate the different menus and turn on/off the reciever. Even the clock still works. In addition, there is a little icon in the lower left hand corner that looks like a padlock. Everytime the GPS freezes, the padlock looks locked. So I'm wondering if this is "feature" of the Magellan 2000. Oh well, thanks for the advise, TX Knight
  11. Hi everyone, I have an old Magellan 2000 GPS. It works fairly well, except sometimes it will get locked ont a set of coordinates and not change no matter how far I move. Is there any way to unfreeze it? Thanks in advance, TXKnight
  12. Elephant Graveyard? Hmmmm.... Definately have to see about checking out that one! Thanks for the tips. Anyone else have any ideas?
  13. Hi everyone, At the end of May I'll be heading West to visit my grandfather in Olympia, WA. Can you guys suggest any caches (or parks) that are must see? Thanks, Sam
  14. Some of the things I've been adding include... I.) Hot Wheels (seems to be a popular item to put in caches as it turns out)... II.) Cast Metal WWII Plane Replicas (easily found under $2)... And my new favorite... III.) Handheld video games that you can buy for a buck! A soon as I found these I stocked up on them! I also think a dollar store is a great idea as well. Good luck finding some good loot! TX Knight
  15. This Stat Bar is a cool idea, I just wish I could add it to my blog! Why can't I? Well because for some strange reason, whenever I submit the code to the site I put my blog on, the code is altered and ends up being a simple link to the geocache website. Even the image doesn't show up. Instead two periods ("..") are what folks are given to click. This is especially strange since I've had no problem submitting other similiar code snippets to the blog in the past. Oh well. I've sent an e-mail asking for help to both blogging site and the Groundspeak folks. Hopefully one of them can come up with an answer. TX Knight
  16. Thanks everyone for the advice. Based on what I'm hearing, I think I might just go ahead and get one of those "pre-payed" minutes plans so I could use the phone for general purpose emergencies. However I think I'm going to resist the temptation to order a pizza with it when I come home victorious from a find... Definately don't need the calories! Thanks again, TXKnight
  17. Hmmm... Didn't realize you could get satellite phones at an affordable price now. Nor did I realize you can rent cell phones. Thanks for the update. TXKnight
  18. A few quick questions... I'm seriously thinking about stopping my cell phone service and saving myself $50 a month. However it also just occured to me that when I start geocache hunting in the woods, it might be useful to have someway to get in contact with civilization (in case of minor gravity induced injury or somehow surviveing a recently well fed mountain lion.) So with that in mind... 1.) From your experience, does a cell phone work in the forest very well? Or am I better off with 2 coffee cans and some string? 2.) Is there a more ideal method for contacting the outside world (ex. maybe a walkie talkie and the local ranger's frequency?) Thanks in advance, TXKnight
  19. Hi everyone, I'm a wannabe geocache hunter who is relatively new to these forums. For the time being I'm probably going to be mostly a lurker due to inexperience, but I look foward to posting more often in the future (once I get my hands on a GPS and learn the tricks of the trade).
  20. This i getting off topic a bit, but I don't know if I'd suggest this maneuver. It might encorauge a hungry bear to keep coming after you! A while back ago I remember seeing a TV show where they discussed how to handle bears under 2 special circumstances: a momma bear with cub, and a hungry bear. 1.) Momma & Cub: Walk backwards very slowly talking very calmly. If you run, she might chase and you ain't out running a bear. You also can't out climb one. So the best idea is to get away from the scene slowly, but don't turn your back on the bear. If the bear attacks, crawl into a fetal position and probably pray. 2.) Hungry Bear: If you find yourself being followed by a bear, especially one that seems to be sniffing around, you could have a hungry bear on you. Try to get away from the bear quickly (though I don't know if I'd recommend running), and get out of the woods if you can. But remember you can't out run a bear. If the bear looks like it's about to attack you, do not get in a fetal position. Afterall, this bear is trying to eat you! So don't make it easy. Instead, spread out your arms wide and make lots of noise. The idea is too make yourself look bigger, meaner, and/or too much trouble to eat. With my crappy memory, I can't promise I am correct about how to handle them, so I encourage anyone who is worried to please look this up (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Afterall, I don't want anyone becomeing snacks for Yogi on my account. Frankly, I hope to one day carry a firearm. I just need to get the funds togther for the firearm, the classes, and the permits.
  21. I've already checked into REI. I looked at there website and called one of their local stores. They didn't indicate that they rented them on the website and the gentleman who I talked to at the store informed me that in the few years he has worked for REI, they've never rented them. Ironically the reason I posted this question was because one of my coworkers told me the same thing, which got me to thinking about the possibility. Thanks anyways.
  22. Thanks. I certainly give that a shot. TXKnight
  23. Hi everyone, Does anyone know where I could rent GPS Units (or if it's possible)? Particulary in the Austin, TX area. Thanks in advance, TXKnight
