We use a gecko 301 and really like it. We haven't noticed any reception problem under the trees but then again we aren't doing much bushwacking right now due to poison ivy, ticks, and a broken ankle.
If I had to name one thing I don't like is that the screen is small for my old eyes.
However, we like the size of the GPSr itself because it fits easily in a pocket or a cell phone holder. -
I vote for fall/winter caching. If there is a mosquito within 5 miles it finds me.

2001 Ford Windstar....We don't really do any offroad caching.
However, the correct answer is whichever vehicle is home and has the LEAST gas in the tank. We have 3 kids of driving age.

You can also take a small stick or rock and "sign" by punching your name or initials into the paper.
We once had someone sign our micro by using a stick and leaf to rub their initials onto the paper.

Being a newbie, I kinda like those maps!
We have enough trouble trying to find some caches! Does that mean we have to go back to the 5 gallon bucket caches instead of the cleverly disguised fake logs and rocks? Or no micros? Wait a minute, maybe it isn't such a bad idea after all! I guess you want use old GPSrs with only about 3 satellites, too.

It could even be a fake or hollow rock. They can be incredibly hard to spot if they have a good camo job.
Start with larger caches... ones that specifically say they are large or an ammo can. Best of all, go with an experienced cacher for the first couple. We literally stood on the rock and sticks hiding the ammo can of the first cache we looked for. We were lucky an experienced cacher just happened to come along and helped show us what to look for.

Not a geocacher but a TB story...a travel bug launched in Kansas by my sister prarie cruiser was picked up and then dropped in West Virginia less than an hour from where we were born and grew up.

Yesterday our son and 2 of his friends went after a cache in a nearby park. When they pulled the can out of the stump something hissed at them. They didn't even stop to sign the log!

Right now, since I am nursing a broken ankle, I LOVE those 1 terrain micros.

You keep caching for a month after spraining your ankle before finally going to a doctor and finding it was actually broken.
Granted, I didn't do any difficult caches but I did manage to limp to a few.

Also, spend some time reading the logs of those who have already found it. They often contain hints.

When hubby and I made a night run to try for a FTF, we spotted a light coming towards us. We at first thought it was another cacher but it turned out to be park police. We explained what we were doing which was OK with him. It just happened the cache was placed near where there had been suicide attempts so he was making sure we weren't jumpers.

You can buy button making machines. The PTA at our elementary school has one. You can find ads for them in craft magazines.

If you need to use a box smaller or clearer than an ammo can you can get small notebooks of water resistant paper. We get ours at a military store but I have seen them at hiking stores.

When I was a kid the boys used to pee on it to kill it.
Seriously, the environmentalists think it should be left alone.
People like me want it gone. The itching is miserable!

I haven't actually broken any yet, but... I was feeling for a magnetic cache on a bridge, and accidentally knocked it into the Passaic River. I e-mailed the owner, and apologized profusely.
Well, that sure upped the difficulty on that one! I think I saw scuba caches somewhere else on the forums.

Already had small case of poison ivy. Then I wasn't watching where I was going and stepped on some loose rock. Now I have red elbows and a fat purple ankle.

First case of poison ivy I have had in 40 years. At least it isn't bad but I had forgotten how it itches! And my first sprained ankle ever. My own fault. Was too busy talking and not watching where I walked.
Has slowed me down but not stopped me.
