What do you leave as a first to find prize?
Lostboy1966 replied to black_cat1's topic in General geocaching topics
I used to leave a FTF prize like a lottery ticket or a fiver, but nowadays, as others have said before me, the blank logbook seems enough. If I happen to have an interesting doodad laying about (an arrowhead or metal pirate coin for example) I'll throw it in, but no longer advertise it as an official FTF prize. I load my new hides with kid-friendly swag when I place them, and consider that enough. -

Cache Build: Another Thing In The Woods

Container base is roughed up with sandpaper, then spray painted in flat brown. Green base coat for the sculpt, then start adding details. After painting, the lid gets several coats of matte spray sealer... -

Cache Build: Another Thing In The Woods

The base sculpt is foam insulation board. It is anchored with 2" screws through the wood, and the threads of the screws were coated in Gorilla Glue, as well as coating the bottom of the foam in the stuff... -
Some pics of my latest cache construction - 6 photos in all. Once again, my discipline taking photos through the process is spotty at best. (See some of my earlier posts regarding my ongoing attempts to attach things to a Lock & Lock without causing leaks.) In this photo I have already screwed the base of the cache into a block of 3/4" pressure-treated wood. That in turn was screwed though the L&L lid that has been scuffed with rough sandpaper, then spread with a coat of foaming Gorilla Glue. Dollops of glue are also put on the interior screw heads, then the whole thing is clamped and left to dry...

Thank you for that!

I've read about the 'Clipboard and Vest' urban camouflage approach, though I've never tried it myself. I do wear a neon trail vest during hunting season. That being said, I have some fond memories of hiking ridiculous oversized containers out into the woods. When I'd pass someone on the trails I just keep a straight face, give a 'wassup' nod and continue walking like I belonged there, no disguise needed!

Not too long ago I found a cache that had apparently been abandoned by the CO. I logged a NM, and after a few months of inaction the cache was Archived by the mods. I was in the area later, and stopped by to clean up the broken plastic and paperwork. That got me to thinking; there are probably many other abandoned geocaches out there that are effectively litter now, and unsearchable from the GC website as far as I can determine. Does anyone know of a way to list these abandoned hides for volunteer cleanup? I'd happily hike to get rid of GeoTrash if I could search for them, smileys be damned!

Confirming the same issue. Weirder still, in Chrome the Lists category is completely gone. See screenshot: on the left is Firefox, where if I click on the Favorites option I get the error posted above. On the right is Chrome, where the lists option is not even visible.

That's what I'm thinking, NYPC. If the move is big enough, it's not fair to carry over the GC number because it's basically a new hide. If I move it , I'll re-submit. Thanks, everyone!
-
Ha! I'm not looking to do anything shady! Still laying out new hides in the park - nothing is official yet. If I move the one I'm thinking of, I'll resubmit it. Traffic is slow enough around here that I'm sure the few that have logged would be happy with an additional Found It chance!

I have a cache that I placed in a preserve a few months ago. I'm now planning some more hides in the area that will be themed to match this one. The problem is, my new hides are on the opposite side of the park, well over a tenth-mile away. My question is, can I relocate a cache a long distance and still keep the GC number (and logs), or do I have to Archive it and Re-Submit it as a new hide? I'm not sure what option I would prefer yet; I'm just asking here because I'm too lazy to look up the rules.

Looks like it has been resolved. Thank you, engineers!

Home location coordinate contains unwanted characters

My home coordinates are being displayed oddly; I have tested this with multiple browsers. If I go to Edit Account Settings > Home Location my coordinates display fine (Pic 1). But if I go to Newest Caches, my Home Coordinates are not displayed properly (Pic 2). As a result, if I try to filter my Newest Caches (ignoring Micros for example), the Filtered Search result is this, with half of my Home coords missing (Pic 3): Anyone else seeing this?

Yeah, like me he is another cacher that has come out of 'retirement' during Covid. It's just not the same game anymore from what I see. I suppose I have to get used to a few logs per year if I'm lucky. Not to be cynical (as I'm being cynical), but I may as well start tossing micros in the woods instead. It's far less effort for apparently the same result. (Again, fire up that world's smallest violin.)
