  1. Thanks for bringing up this Blog post, barefootjeff. The title of 'The Logbook' article caught my attention, but as I read on my reaction became more neutral. In my immediate urbanized area (SW Connecticut, USA) there are no parks that don't have a micro hidden in them already. I have to go 10+ miles (16 km) to find spots where I can plant a new container. Do I secretly wish some of the closer ones would be retired so I can get a new one in? For sure. Do I think the owners of those caches should retire them because they have been out for some time even while they are still getting Found It logs? Absolutely not. In one case there was a historical park that I do volunteer work for (keys to the facility and everything) that had a micro - I messaged the owner asking if he would consider retiring it so I could build a themed replacement container. He politely said no, so that was the end of story. He got there first, is still an active player, so dibs for the .10 mile radius are his. So long as the player is active and it is being logged (regardless of how often), and there are no outstanding NM alerts, players should not be guilted into archiving their active hides. I did, however, set up a Notification I call 'Vulture' to watch for local openings. I ain't proud. 😉
  2. Wishing all players the best for 2022! My resolution is to finally place the containers that have been sitting in my garage for months... 😉
  3. I hope you mend well and quickly. When all is said and done, I suggest putting out a commemorative cache container as a warning to others. Maybe a sneaker (or boot) as camo... 😇
  4. I've always enjoyed building odd containers far more than hunting, and like knowing that each hide I place is unique. It's always nice to get logs beyond 'TFTC' for the effort as well. This one has always been a favorite (cache was topped a rotten head, title was Caution: Geocaching Ahead).
  5. Tis' the Season! Do you have anything you hang on your tree to celebrate Geocaching? I have this - another player used to hand-cast glass FTFs, and I managed to get one. Though if memory serves, I got mine as a trade for a custom walking stick TB. Still, it's on my tree every year. If you're still out there, TheWilkens, Merry Christmas!
  6. My primary stomping grounds have a yearly deer cull (bow only). I've come upon tree stands when placing hides during the season, so I throw on my day-glow orange vest.
  7. Assuming I won't have a lot of time to devote to hunting, what are the best containers/hides in the area? Advice is appreciated.
  8. I saw this thread come up way back when and started reading through it, but stopped because it wasn't a subject that hooked my attention much. I finally scrolled through the contents, and the quote above best summed up my take on it. 👍
  9. I've been at it since 2005, and am barely over 300. Good on you!
  10. I don't do gadget caches (yet), I just enjoy making odd containers. Not gonna lie, I've been playing since 2005 and had to look up what a 'petling' was. I assumed it was some kind of weird furry-like fetish, now I see it's just those preform micro containers. Glad to see I was wrong! Either way, not my style of hide, but to each their own...
  11. That descriptive has always stuck in my craw a bit, to be honest. I'm all for the 'we all are free to play the game our own way' mantra. My mantra happens to be putting a lot of effort into (hopefully) fun container builds. So yes, sometimes my only reason for placing a hide IS for the geocache. I have not had many complaints so far. As for the original subject of the thread; would I prefer it if some of the saturated parks in my area opened up so I could put some new hides in? You bet. At my current stage of the hobby, I'm not much interested in having to maintain anything more than 10 miles from my home coordinates, and the locations are getting thin, especially because I avoid micros in urban areas (that mantra thing again - you be you). I have a stack of 5 series-themed containers that have been sitting in my garage for months because I'm having difficulty finding an area close enough to place them to my liking. Do I fault the other players that got to those locations first with their hides? Nope. That's just the way the satellite bounces.
  12. Thanks to my 'Revuah' , the Mods here, and anyone else that helps to keep the game running!
  13. Not necessarily on topic, but this thread is why I find the forums so interesting. A scenario I never thought of being discussed openly with helpful comments from the community. Thumbs up!
  14. Being a slow-paced finder, I don't download to my device that often. After some tinkering and testing, it seems there are just certain caches that refuse the Send To Garmin command. Very odd. I can easily work around it by downloading the GPX instead, but I just wanted to drop the observation off in case anyone else has noticed this behavior.
  15. I've noticed that when I use the Send To Garmin option when downloading caches that it works the first few times, but then starts failing. Is it just me, or does anyone else have this issue? I'm using a 64sx, and have had the same problem with a 20x. Frustrating.
  16. Please keep us updated! I've got a fiver on the Letterbox option.
  17. Hide unto others as you would find yourself is what I go by. Natch, this can be interpreted differently by everyone that plays the game.
  18. Just to be clear, that was meant to be a light-hearted compliment to the GC maintenance staff. I swear, you can't post anything on the internet without someone getting offended these days.
  19. I'm in IT support, and over the past several years I've become increasingly annoyed with 'cute' error messages from websites. If I'm trying to manage a client's email system and I can't log in to the portal to do so, don't show me a frown emoji and a 'Whoopsie-doodle, something went wrong' error message. It's infuriating. Be professional, fer cripe's sake! Having vented about that, I tried to pop into the forum earlier today and got this gem. I literally laughed out loud. Nice cable management, Signal!
  20. Always a risk, to be sure. This stuff might act more like floss, though.
  21. Please note that I said 'I'm sure there are exceptions', and used the term geotrash multiple times. If I came across a sack of McDonald's wrappers tossed along a trail, my first thought would not be "perhaps this stuff is placed with permission". For every example that can be found of an archived cache still being active on some other platform, I'd be willing to bet there are hundreds that are abandoned plastic, and therefore litter. I would 'steal' those McDonald's wrappers and never lose a wink of sleep over it. Peace!
  22. I used this on one, and it has been doing pretty well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZDFXP3C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 100 lb. test, super thin paracord. String it through some branches and it is very difficult to spot. I attached a small metal plate to the container (Lock&Lock) to give it enough heft to lower easy once you found the spool at ground level.
  23. As others have said, when a cache gets to the point of a NA (or even a non-responded to NM), the odds are that the owner has already bailed on it, and won't reply to any adoption requests. I'm sure there are exceptions, but in general these hides are set to become geotrash. What I'd like to see is an option to view nearby archived hides so I can opt to go clean them up if they look like they have been abandoned. I have created a Notification for myself that sends me an alert when something close gets a "Log type(s): Archive, Needs Archived, Temporarily Disable Listing, Needs Maintenance". Admittedly, this is more opportunistic than altruistic; yes, I'd happily clean up some geotrash, but I also want to know where a new hide spot opens up!
  24. I started posting photos of my rebuild here, but decided to remove them as they were kind of redundant in this thread. I may repost them under a category more dedicated to container construction.
  25. I leave fake pirate 'gold' coins when I have them, just for the kids.
