  1. This is wonderful news. Thanks for posting. We have been hearing this for many years now. Since 2007? It is true, they are trying to help us improve our sport. Chris Gruppenhoff ODNR helped with my earthcaches in Hocking Hills. He expressed great interest in helping to promote placement of physical caches in the forests. They really are working to find a solution. It's just not a priority. Patience! If you have a wonderful spot for geaocaching on state or national forest make it an earthcache. They are quite fun. If you want to spend $50 a year, you can buy a permit to place a physical container. RobJons
  2. [ I received your email and promptly forwarded to 30 people in my area asking them to pass the message on. Two weeks is not much time. Good luck. Athens is only 45 minutes away...I will try to attend! RobJons quote name=Smokey'sBuddy' date='May 21 2010, 05:32 AM' post='4339566]
  3. I would like to see the Virtual Caches come back too. But I agree, its not likely. I think the problem most people find when placing a cache in an awesome spot is that it is usually owned by a State Park or State Forest, or Historical Society etc. , which we all know is not allowed without permission. The best solution is to contact your department of natural resources or historical society and work with them to place a cache. It is time consuming. It took me several months of correspondence to get permission for one. States have different guideline and fees. Yep, the alternative is Waymarking! Try it! It is as addicting as Geocaching!
  4. I've got one better. A guy picked up my TB by stumbling across a cache 2 months ago. He read the insert and decided to take the TB home and join geocaching - that's great, but, he still has the travel bug. I waited patiently and after over 2 months I went to his profile and sent a friendly email. He sent SPAM to my return email and his website on his personals is an advertisement and hype about buying into some stuff. I have no way to get in touch. I have emailed twice and get folder of SPAM. ERRRRRR!!!! That TB is history. Gee, I realy liked that one.
  5. I have searched for help in the forums and had no luck. I am trying to create a listing using Frontpage. I have no trouble with the html. I am having no luck with adding small icons or animated gifs. I tried uploading the icon to "Upload images" from the page listing. Then I linked that address to the icon in Frontpage - it doesn't work. My background pages work this way. Is there an easier program or trick to this. I tried some things on older threads-no luck. THANKS
  6. Hello, I am a small women too. About 115 lbs. I usually don't take a backpack unless I plan on a very long hike. I hate the hydration system - I never feel like its clean water. I always carry water bottles. Usually I carry a waist pack for most caches. I have an army issue Alice pack for the long hikes. They come in womens sizes and you can add or take away pouches as needed. Some days I carry lots of gear some not. Unless your planning on all day hikes - a basic department store childs pack should be fine. If you plan to hike on a regular basis I would say yes go to the professoinal sports shop and be fitted. Your going to pay a great deal more. Make sure you try it on before you buy. I find I walk better with my pack on. My husband will offer to carry but I like the way it feels. My cell phone rarely picks up in hiking trails. Things I may carry: Snacks water Compass Bug spray in season Individually wrapped moist wipes Camera Flashlight - if cache requires Duct- tape (some caches require bushwacking - wrap it around my pants up to my knees- make cheap gaitors.) Rain poncho - as needed Trade items and pen That's about it.
  7. Thanks to all your help. Yes I have emailed to reviewer trying to find spots before I post as it takes much effort to go out and place the cache and post the site rather than post it and be denied and have to go back out and move it. I think this is simpler in a sensitive questionable area. I have a different coord. 38.6672N 82.6418.w Pedro OHIO (glasses required) Borders the road and the forest. Really I'm not asking for verification to submit- merely a process I can use to see my spot is okay BEFORE I submit. This is pretty much the process I went through - submit the coords and ask - I just want to be able to do this myself. I will take all your advise. Your help is greatly appreciated. Yes the reviewers are great people. So helpful in all aspects Robjons
  8. I can't get the map to load. 38' 40' 05 .31"N 82" 38'37.82"W Dean State forest near riders pond. Thank you very much.
  9. Lake Alma is a State Park. As yet I have not obtained permission. Ohio state parks are not as difficult as the state or national forests and preserves. It is possible to buy a usage permit in our state to place caches in the forests and this is what I refer to. Emails of maps to the foresty service and review have not corrolated. the forestry service has been so very nice and the reviewers but would like to pinpoint an area everyone can be happy with - without so much research. I just feel like I am wasting the reviewers time if I just say oh well, lets just try this spot and see if it gets posted or denied. I would feel like a real nuisance. Thanks for your input.
  10. Sounds like the cache is really bringing you to this scenic spot (the lake) Placing this in a higher dryer area would be sure to give you more peace of mind that your visitors were not disappointed. Also consider if this is a family type cache. Best not to be muddy for some folks.
  11. Pull your clothing taunt and scrape with a sharp knife or razor.
  12. CheaperThanDirt.Com http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ammocans_bdhf.htm 50 cal USED $7.97 BEAT THAT!!!! Okay $7.17 if your a member.
  13. I like cool polished rocks, geodes and fossils. I also found an antique postcard which had the name of the cache it originated in and details about the card. It was a snapshot of the same area nearly 80 years before- very interesting! OH and Subway coupons are GOOD! Rubber snakes are not funny!!!!!
  14. RobJons = Robin and John (sounds like RonJons my favorite surf shop in Cocoa Beach FLA.)
  15. What maps are the reviewers using? I used topozone to pace a cache just outside state forest boundary. Reviewer denied it. Maps they use showed it was inside the boundary of the state forest. Would save both reviewer and my self alot of time if I knew which service they used to review. I'm not trying to squeek by with a cache near the forest. I just want a quality cache with an interesting park nearby as a perk. We all now the rules with State/ National Forests. I want to be sure to abide these rules without being rejected time after time.
  16. Hello Maggiezoo! I have been waiting for someone nearby to start up a club. Count me in. I love your caches. I really wanted to go to your Hogwarts Weekend but couldn't get off work. You really put some hard work into our sport. I have the same ideas. Alot of cachers in our area have some outstanding caches. Myself being fairly new to geocaching, I could learn alot from the seasoned members. I have also been given a wonderful option from the parks department for clubs. I will email you that information privately. Robjons
  17. When I try to link to Mapsend with GPS it searches COM ports 1-4. I read in forums there is a way to hack registry but no one was specific. MapSend website has been no help. There servers are down today. I would apprciate help. Thank you.
  18. I use an army issue alice pack. Go to cheaperthandirt.com and look. (I get my ammo cans here too) Alice packs have lots of little compartments you can add or subtract from the base bag. You can get a frame also. Much nicer than your everyday school backpack. I find it very functional and things don't shift. Cost is around 35$ for base pack without the frame. Worth the money as they are very durable. Check local Army Navy store if you have one close.
  19. I recently ran across a bookmark that had caches posted all along an interstate in Indiana. The caches were at rest stops or very near the freeway. Where are these found and shared on the website? I've looked through forums and can't find them. I hope there is a link to these. This is great.
  20. Eastern Plains Garter Snake (Thamnophis radix radix). Otherwise a common Garter snake. Harmless and benificial snake. Fun to play with.
  21. I think it would be helpful if everyone had information on poisonous snakes. Living in Ohio we have only 3 poisonous snakes. Just being able to recognize these three will keep you safe and prevent other harmless snakes from being killed. I work in a hospital and patients always bring in snakes they have been bitten by, killed them in panic and hurry in the ER. Please don't kill harmless snakes! It's our responsibility to know the wildlife around us and help preserve it while we are out there having fun! Lets know these rules that apply for all US states. Recognizing Venomous Snakes NONVENOMOUS SNAKES 1. Head usually oval, but may be somewhat triangular. 2. Pupils round. 3. No pits-only nostrils present. 4. Divided scales on underside of tail 5. Although many snakes vibrate their tail when upset, nonvenomous snakes never have rattles VENOMOUS SNAKES 1. Head distinctly triangular. 2. Pupils elliptical. 3. Pits as well as nostrils present. 4. Undivided scales on underside of tail. 5. Except for the copperhead, tail ends in a rattle. Copy this and laminate for your travelpack. In Ohio the 3 venomous snakes are the Copperhead, TimberRattleSnake and the Eastern Massauga. The rattle snake and Massauga are very rare in Ohio and both have rattles which easily identify. Copperheads are everywhere and prolific. Just recognizing this ONE poisonous snake can keep you SAFE! People think we have Cottonmouth/Water Moccasins in Ohio - we do not. Know what to do when you have been bitten! Check the website. BE SAFE! Check out Ohio DNR wildlife Use above like to find and identify wildlife in your area of Ohio. Make your Geocaching an educational adventure as well. Lastly a note on TimberRattlers in Ohio. If you find one, don't kill it. Take coord and notify Ohio Dept Natl. Resources through web site above. Thanks! I hope others post the venomous snakes in there area. Florida and other southern states have lots of venomous snakes.
