  1. biggest problem with cheap chargers is that thety charge too fast. This heats the batteries and heat is the ultimate enemy of rechargables. I have 2 La Crosses. I set them to the lowest setting. I use 2nd gen batteries with low leakage, that way i can charge them and they retain most of their charge for a couple of months.
  2. Black Friday is starting to take hold here in Canada as well, I guess having the dollar close to par makes it a good deal to go south of the border for the deals. As always Canadian retailers respond when it hurts their bottom line.
  3. There are a few Android tablets that have host USB. Craig makes 2, a 7" and a 10" both with a host USB. The problem is that Garmin teamed up with Asus to market the Garmin phone. I suspect that is part of why you don't see an android app to talk to a Garmin GPS. Just guessin though!
  4. If you mean, copying GPX files to your GPS from an Android device, the only method that would work that I can think of is to copy the GPSX file to a external memory card while the card is inserted in the Android device. In order to work the GPS unit would have to support GPX files on an external memory card and the Android would have to also support an external memory card.
  5. I use mine for geocaching, car nav and ATVing. I went with a rugged mount for both the car and quad. It comes with a 3 pack of Garmin screen protectors. It's easy to slip the GPS in and out of but lacks the built in speaker of the auto mount. It does have an audio output jack on the cord you you can add an amplified speaker if you wanted for the same functionality as the auto mount. I have a size medium tall nite(ize case. I use the standard GC.com lanyard. I added an 8 gig card for maps and other data. Maps, I have topo, city nav and some other custom maps that i have built from personal tracks.
  6. Is there moose in that area? Moose when viewed straight on at a distance, especially young moose can look like a person when standing still. the tell tale sign is the wide brim hat appearance from their ears that gives them away.
  7. for hunting and hiking, I'd opt for the Oregon simply because it's smaller and lighter. I upgraded from the Oregon to the Montana a few month's ago. For ATVing and geocaching, it rocks. during hunting season, i reverted to my 60Cx for size and weight savings.
  8. When this happens, how long since it was last used? It is common for a GPS receiver to take longer to locate itself if it hasn't been used in a while. This happens when the GPS has to match the pattern if you will of the satellite signals/timing to it's reference almanac. From this it then can tell exactly where it is.
  9. Ahhh, a fellow geocacher and ATVer. I own a Nuvi 550, bought it when it was like $400. At the time it was the best all around unit if you could only have one unit. was disappointed in it's inability to accept tracks. Routes were a PITA. That left custom maps which actually worked well but required extra work ever time trails were added or removed. Once the Montana was announced, I was pretty sure I had found THE ultimate GPS. I have not been disappointed. Plus I got a great deal on it. Yes it's large but I gladly accept that rather then have to squint at a smaller hi res screen.
  10. Oregon is much more geocaching friendly, I feel saddled with the Montana, which is really just a Nuvi made into a handheld and a poor geocaching implmentation. I think most that praise it do so because the have not experienced the 60, CO or OR series. The only real upgrade is the amount of caches it holds, which is something like 14K. It's true, everyone has different opinions of what qualifies as "the best". If owned and used for geocaching the 60C, 60Cx, Legend Cx, Legend HCx, colorado, oregon and now the Montana 600. IMHO, best button operated GPS... 60Cx best touch screen, Montana Oregon Montana dim display bright display fits well in hand or pocket lil large for hand or pocket hi res screen, small letters/icons low res screen, larger letters/icons 5000 geocaches 12000 geocaches supports Wherigo does not support Wherigo
  11. I was a unsuspecting Colorado tester(ie early adopter paying customer) and it had that issue to. They eventually fixed it with a new firmware.
  12. Garmin Nuvi 500/550 all around unit, native geocaching ability including Wherigo, on road, offroad and marine. Not in production anymore though. next best, Montana but you need maps unlike a car unit.
  13. did you check off both YES and NO on the attribute list? I checked of both for all attibutes so i get a complete list of attributes on my GPS. You can contact the macro author and ask him or here about that behavior. I recently upgraded to version 8 and it is well worth it for the direct access to geocaching.com.

  15. GSAK can via a macro, filter based on attributes and list the attributes as a log entry when exported to the GPS.
  16. LOL, well one advantage to having your unit breakdown and require replacement, no worries about profiles getting messed up.
  17. tried mine, map selection sticks properly, no change in enabled/disabled when switching profiles.
  18. The eTrex display is a bit smaller but also brighter then the Oregon but if your a touch screen kinda person, the Oregon is the way to go. The Oregon has a few extra features compared to the eTrex 20 too; 5000 caches instead of 2000 wireless transfer, good to share tracks and waypoints with other wireless transfer capable units and also usable with Chirp modules custom maps 3D compass Altimeter supports Wherigo caches and one big advantage, the Oregon has been around a couple of years so the firmware bugs are mostly worked out where the new eTrex is still in the debugging phase.
  19. WOW, impressive, 3 weeks and that included being shipped via Canada Post rugular parcel service over a long weekend. The last 4 digits of the serial number is 88xx, 6000 more then the one I sent. Was hoping it would be a brand spanking newly built unit but it came with software version 2.6. Hmmmm. well, might as well load up the latest and see what happens.
  20. I sent my 600 in due to the calibration issue 3 weeks ago. I called last week to see what was up and was told my replacement was on back order. I just got an email today saying it will shipping tomorrow. Canada Post, long weekend, might see it in a week.
  21. I believe they were talking about a gpx file containing only geocaching data such as a pocket query.
  22. If you really like the touch screen of the iPhone, I would recommend the Montana because it is touch also. As far as accuraccy, I haven't looked at any comparisons for accuracy under cover. The Montana I think (guessing here) but teh Montana uses a patch antenna where as the 62 uses the tried and true quad helix antenna,. I have used the 60 Cx for years and under cover it was great but they have made great strides with the patch antenna accuracy over the past couple of years. On the down side, the Montana is a handful. Great for my aging eyes and ATVing and mountain biking. plus it can double as a car GPS when used in conjunction with Garmins auto mount with built in speaker. On a positive note, the Montana is highly configurable. As far as geocaching with it, I have used many GPS's over the years and hands down, the Montana is the best I've used.
