  1. So, by that logic, I should be able to post an event in Yosemite requiring participants to climb El Capitan? Perhaps an event requiring a 120 mile bike ride would be more in order? Innumerable possibilities. All equally redonkulous. 112 mile ride would be enough as long as it was sandwiched between a 2.4 mile swim and 26.2 mile run. (although in all seriousness I believe that this year there were several events around the RAGBRAI start and towns it went through(450 + mile bike ride across Iowa)) I think just coming to the even should be enough. More and more events are being held at coffee shops, restaurants etc and if I don't choose to patronize that business I may come in, spend some time talking to attendees and than move on allowing the space for a paying customer. I can think of a recent event our family attended at restaurant. Three other geocachers who we had never met or found any caches they hid were present. We had eaten at the hotel that morning and didn't feel the need to eat again and 10 am on Sunday was a little early to imbibe. So we said hi, spent a few awkward moments making small talk and than excused ourselves so we weren't taking up space that a paying customer might occupy. I had not issues logging the event. We attended, signed the "log"/sign in sheet and that should be all that was required.
  2. An I-touch works fine for geocaching. If you have the latest Ios you could load multiple caches into different windows. (Kind of pain but easily done.) IE go to gc.com, pick the cache you want and go to that page. Than open a new browser window and load another cache and so on. Would get cumbersome but allow to view a dozen or so cache pages like you were online. If you don't want to go that route you will probably have to buy an app to store your cache info. I like Geosphere and use that on a regular basis. ($8.99 I think) You can load PQ or gpx files to itouch either directly or via a file service like drop box. I just download via the PQ tab on the app and it works fine. I think my main database has over 10K in caches (only shows 4k at a time) so I always have caches in my i-touch if I am out and around. You can also use the i-touch as a stand alone gpsr by pairing with a BT or cradle gps. I like the dual electronics bluetooth gps but also have a dual xps gps cradle. The thing I like about the bluetooth gps is I can put my i-touch in a otterbox defender case which really protects it for from falls and some water exposure (dropping in a lake would probably not work. ) My typical paperless layout 4th generation I-pod touch with otterbox defender. Running geosphere and I also like to have Navigon (navigation software that will route you to the cache location.) Dual Gps Blueooth.
  3. Here is a log for you OP TFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCT FTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCT FTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTC TFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCT FTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCT FTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTCTFTC Does 500 letters really mean anything. A good cache in an interesting location deserves a longer log. A film container tossed at the base of a sign, under a lamp post or under some rotting logs in the woods doesn't inspire people to write thought full logs.
  4. They will look like donuts. little chocolate donuts. Don't forget they will also have sprinkles.
  5. What GPSr Make and Model do you use? IPod Touch 4th generation (64gb) running dual xps150 bluetooth gps with geosphere for caching and Navigon for routing (housed in an otterbox hard case which it never has to leave.) On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr? 8 What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best? All the info at my fingertips, good accuracy, finds satellites from a cold start as fast as my garmin 60csx. Able to keep caching tools with me like calculators, decoders etc, also multitask, listen to music, surf net etc. What is the worst thing about your GPSr? Total cost. Arm band to carry bluetooth gps has a breakaway strap so I had to rig up my own system to make sure I could wear on my arm and not worry about it falling off. Otterbox case is nearly waterproof but bottom can allow in some water if submerged.
  6. To this. Did you not consider a compromise between an overabundance of road side micros and caches with the highest possible terrain rating? When you place caches that are at both ends of the spectrum, easy P&Gs and one end and caches which require special equipment at the other, it's not that unexpected that those that enjoy very easy or very difficult caches are going to be less than thrilled. That said, I don't think you'll find anyone that will condone stealing caches, no matter what kind of cache it is. Now I understand that these are not 1 star keyholder on guardrail hides, most of them would be what some would call "evil micros". But NYPaddleCacher brings up a good point, this is one extreme to another. Drop about 10 ammo cans in the hundreds of square miles of State Forests in that area, and I'm sure "they'll" be happy. Sure but will you be happy when someone steals the ammo cans. 10x $10-$15 adds up and it seems like ammo cans that are not part of puzzle caches have a short life span.
  7. I just recently came across a cache that had 5 dead coyotes under the bridge where the cache was hidden. Since ground zero was around the animals I choose not hunt for the cache but in no way did I feel that the cache owner was responsible for that. Now if they hid the cache with the animals there that would be a different story.
  8. I never got a chance to look for any in Prague. I had loaded them on my gps but never got a chance to get away and look even though they were a few hundred feet away . I did my caching in Brno. I also remember areas over names . I went back and found a couple of runs I took while wearing my Garmin Forerunner and had uploaded to a workout site that I track my workouts on. I remember the exact area and route I took while caching now and think I was able to id some of the caches. I will contact the owners and see if they kept the old logs (per listing they replaced the logs in 2010) I also loaded up gsak on an old netbook I took with me and some of caches are listed as ground zero waypoint. So at the least I can log one or two caches assuming the owner is ok with it. I my still contact GS and see what they can tell me. Thanks for everyones help. I wonder if I logged them now. Thought I did, and I did upload my run logs but maybe too much Pivo and Slivovitz made my brain idle.
  9. Not a bad idea but 1st I need to figure out the caches I found.
  10. This was during the time that Groundspeak was having issues with people not receiving emails about deleted logs (Sept 09). http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=249924&st=0&p=4339816&hl=finding%20deleted%20cache%20logs&fromsearch=1entry4339816 I believe I logged them. Starting to wonder since there would be no reason to delete them (they were in English but I can't imagine that would be an issue) Nope same account. Only have the one I have gone back through my PQ's from that time and I just don't recognize the caches. I'll keep looking. I was just hoping that maybe a cache stat site stored finds/logs etc.
  11. Kind of answering my own question but it did dawn on me to google my user name and choose the cached results. This brings up some of my finds and also finds that mention my user name. Still not able to find the caches in questions yet.
  12. I have not been actively logging caches for the past few years and starting caching just for the fun of it. I am fine with this but I noticed that some of the previous caches I did log are not in my totals. The only reason I care about these are because they are caches I found while visiting the Czech Republic with my father and mother. It was a special trip and I valued some of those caches. This would have been the summer of 2009. Is there a site that archives cache logs or a cached page where I might find old versions of the cache pages? I tried looking at a cache map but none of names are ringing a bell and my czech is poor. Any thoughs on how to find old cache logs that my have been deleted? (I don't why they would have been deleted and there were multiple cache owners if I remember) I was sure I completed the logs while I was in CR. Thanks in advance for the help.
  13. I use the otterbox defender. Hard case, rubber shell, hard screen protector. Link to http://www.otterbox.com/iPhone-4-Defender-Series-Case/APL2-I4XXX,default,pd.html I think I paid $16.xx at Amazon. The only down side is when I want to use it with gps hardware I have to remove it from the case to be able to fit the item in ie Tom Tom touch GPS, Dual XGPS251. But I recently bought a Itouch compatible blue tooth Gps and hope that will work with the item in the case but I haven't tried it yet.
  14. Were the physical caches at the event? If so I guess they can log the cache. In the end they lose out on the experience of finding it the way it was intended. I can remember years ago there used to be traveling caches that would go to events and get signed. Same thing with TB's. If the actual caches were not present than I don't understand how anyone could claim to have found it? Than again I guess I don't care about the numbers.
  15. Great pun! Seriously, you know you're sitting on their guns, and the one on your belt (you DO carry, right?) is just added insurance. The look on their faces would be priceless! You know it wouldn't be right to take the guns and leave the happy meal toys, right? Everyone knows you have to Trade Up, Trade Even, or Don't Trade! Loch Cache Yeah the happy meal toys are worth much more than the guns.
  16. Curious the finder that night that triggered this never logged his find
  17. Stop for a second and think about all the opinions expressed in this thread. It seems that the consensus is that a cache should bring you to a place of interest. Did it occur to anyone that maybe some of the people hiding these micros find these places to be of interest? It is very possible that they work in that area, live in that area, shop in that area etc. It is a place they are comfortable with and know. To them that crappy area is home. Than the argument that people should have no problem affording to $6 or $10 or $20 to hide a "quality cache" Well maybe some people do. What about when the finders don't take the time to return the hide properly or are not discrete and it gets muggled. Another $10 down the drain to replace it. It is essentially free to hide a film canister micro. If all you care about is "the hide and the location you take me to" than why do you need a special container, or trade items? Is it about the area or the swag? Does an ammo can make the hide any more special? People harp on about being in trashy, homeless areas but don't other threads discuss people hunting a certain "psycho" urban cache in a park teeming with homeless folks etc. (No I am not complaining about this one but my point is that this hide is ok but others ones aren't? It doesn't sound like this is any more redeeming location wise than the local homeless shelter but people still seek it out) As far as granting permission. In my area there are a couple of prolific micro hiders and they post that permission was obtained on every one. I won't go out of my way looking for most of there hides since I have gotten used to their style (Although after 50 or so micros they are starting to get a little better) When one is particurally good or bad I will note that in my log as well. For instance, as part of the Hermits Quest game I needed a cache that I hadn't found that was related to a food establishment (not exactly but I forget the exact verbage) One of these caches fit the bill perfectly so I sought it out. It was placed on a temporary storage container in rocks, gravel, broken glass etc. In my log I voiced my displeasure at such a cache, heck there was even a metal stairway that would have been better. Last month I had found a cache and noticed that in the same area was another one I hadn't seen before so I followed the arrow and lo and behold it brought me to part of the city I hadn't known existed (an rc car track) which seemed really neat and something I will maybe do with the kids in the future. That log reflected the fun I had at finding the area. Bottom line is if you don't like a cache let the owner know why and offer an alternative. Better yet quit crabbing and hid one of your own as an example. Lastly, I think it is sad that some people are so presumptuous as to log a SBA just because they don't like a type of cache.
  18. Vegas sounds like fun. But central to the US would be nice as well. How about Kansas City, KS? Large city in the middle of the country, tons of good caches, the airport has good fares for those flying (served by Southwest Air so that helps) etc. If course I would like for it to be in Nebraska since I live there but Kansas City would be easy for folk to get to, stay etc. Alternately St Louis is farther south but in the middle from the east and west.
  19. I love using pocket pcs to gps hunt. I will have to look into GPSdash as I am more familar with beeline GPS. I have dell axim x05v. This unit has both a CF and SD slot so it super flexible. I have beat the living crap out of my unit and it works fine. A screen protector and a padded case is all that less clumsy people need. You can buy a bluetooth SIRF III gps unit for around $90 or less on sale. They also sell CF or SD slot GPS units but I prefer the bluetooth so I can put in a belt pouch and not have to worry about carrying it. It is super sensitive so I don't have to worry about dropping signals. The battery can be a small issue but with a 2nd battery or an extended battery it is less of a worry or you can buy on EBay a battery powered recharger that will run and at the same time recharge the unit. I think they are like $8 plus shippping. I can dl all my pocket queries right to my PDA and have all the info at my fingertips without having to input any data. In addition to caching I use my PDA to navigate roads, listen to podcasts and music, take pictures including while caching by using a sd slot camera. When in civilization I can surf the net with the built in wireless features. I can watch movies on it's sharp VGA screen to keep the kiddies occupied or I can transfer shows from my tivo to it and watch them on the go. In comparison I also have a Palm based PDA the garmin Ique 3600 and the battery life on this is awful, the operating system frequently crashes etc.
  20. Just trying to think how to do it in a more organized fashion and I was planning maybe a couple of caches that I was sure was filled with good party swag. Also hadn't decided to go gps route (trying to get enough gpsr could be a challenge) or just directions or something else. The more ideas I hear the better I can plan this. (not until July) Plus my kids are pretty darn good at caching and most if not all of his friends have never done any. The two oldest boys (6 and 5 currently) can carry a gps and follow it to the area once we get to about 1000 ft, the oldest can read a compass (better than daddy sometimes) and they all try to find the cache before it gets pulled out of hiding. Whereas the other kids might get frustrated or not get the concept. (just want to make it fun for all involved and do something different)
  21. Never fails when I am looking for an urban micro I have to pee. It gets worse when I can't find the cache quickly because than you start doing the pee dance and people really think you are strange. Staring at a park bench and dancing around When I am in the woods, it is rare that nature calls. Like a second pee sense
  22. Our family geocaches together and my oldest son will be 7. We have been talking about having a birthday party and incorporating geocaching into his party. Any suggestions on how to do this with probably about 10 to 12 children? A search of the forums didn't bring up anything on this topic. (at least for 5 pages)
