  1. SORRY my POST was too WORDY & CAPPY, but yes what you guys stated below is the basic question "Do logs from cell phones trigger the watch list notification?" and I know for a fact that they don't in SOME cases, but it could be due to the APP the Cell Phone user has or possibly it being a Android or Apple and/or the Wireless provider???????? Just wanted to know if this is a KNOWN ISSUE like was mentioned about they do not trigger the Last Time Logged into the Geocaching Website.
  2. I am still pretty much Old School (use a GPS, not a CELL Phone) when it comes to Geocaching, but have experienced a few issues lately that has puzzled me. First of all, I would guess that this has been discussed somewhere in these FORUMS, but it has eluded me. To try to state the issue as simply as possible, I will tell you a common practice that I use: When a NEW Geocache appears and it is within 10 miles of my home, I will immediately put it on my WATCH list. I do this for a couple reasons: 1. To see how long before a FTF appears and to decide whether I want to give it a shot. 2. Does it get found at all during the first day or two and if NOT was it a NEWBIE that hid it? 3. To monitor it for a few days to see if there are any issues that finders post such as being on Private Property etc. OK, that being said, I could get many Email notifications stating it has been found and this is typically the case. Some LOG when they get home to their Regular Computer and others LOG their find from their Cell Phone with Logs such as "More Later" which is FINE knowing that it can be a bit difficult trying to type on a small cell phone and if in bright sunlight, even more difficult. NOW, to the issue (least I think it is a issue). I have noticed that some New Geocaches have LOGS appearing that DON'T Trip the Watch-list Tool, but do in fact get posted to the cache page as a Find. I know there are MANY APPS out there for Geocaching on Cell Phones and there are APPLE & ANDROID Phones and who knows what else and Many Network Providers, so it is probably just isolated cases with certain combinations. I am thinking it is ONLY when the Log is made by using the Cell Phone Providers Network and NOT when the Cell Phone user is connected to a WiFi network. I have also heard from others that Logging TB's from some Cell phone Apps can have issues! I know this is a lot to comprehend and NOT a pressing issue, but was wondering if anyone has any COMMENTS/ANSWERS to this???? Thanks, "PAMAP"
  3. Hey Keystone Approver, I see you have time to moderate this area, but what about the 3 emails I've sent you asking about an update/status report on my Virtual Cache Submission for "All Aboard the Timely Geocache" (GCGVOM). Possibly you are not receiving my emails for some unknown reason?!?!
  4. GREAT, I'm thrilled with the NEW Mapping software. Really missed not being able to see Ones Found vs. NEW, Others Etc. and have been waiting anxiously for over 9 months. My occupation as you might have expected is mapping & GIS and I was wondering if you could share any information on your programming? I think you are using MapPoint for your basemaps, but what Programming Language or GIS software do you use to produce the individual queries? Again GREAT JOB!!!!
  5. I've been told that the Statewide Map with caches Found and Not Found by you will return. It has been in the works for several months and they are close to releasing it. It is suppose to be BETTER than the old version, but since it is a heavy load to the server, it probably will only be available to CHARTER Members.
  6. By response do you mean an email to the cache owner or the actual LOG? At this time you cannot send / attach a picture to any emails sent through the geocaching mail network. You need to contact the cache owner for his email address outside of the geocache network or possibly he has it listed in his profile. Then you can send an email with attachment through your email provider. Prime Suspect answered your question if it is for the LOG. Hope this helps.........
  7. I've asked the same question many of times!! I feel this is the High Tech age and not the Pony Express Days. They should repond within 48 hours in my opinion unless they are on vacation, ill, etc. If they don't, it is neglect on their part and if they have any real caches out there, they probably never maintain them. I complained to one geocacher about them taking close to 2 weeks to reply to the Virtual Cache answers I emailed them and they DELETED my LOG. I did finally get it restored after I explained my case and why it is critical to respond in a timely manner. IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO ANSWER EMAIL or MAINTAIN A CACHE - "DON"T PLACE THEM!!!!"
  8. I have also wondered when the New Caches Found State Map will be available. I understand that there is a lot of work and maintenance to run a site of this complexity. With limited funds; it can be almost impossible to satisfy everyone’s whims. If this has already been discussed on previous threads, I apologize – didn’t find it. I offer this suggestion for others(Chartered & Non-Chartered) to comment on: I have been a paying chartered member for one year and have no complaints. My recommendation to help situations like this is to make services like the Caches Found Map available to Chartered members ONLY. Its not like this feature is a NECESSITY to keep track of your caches found, it’s just a VERY NICE graphic depiction that is a luxury. If others want this luxury item, let them join and help pay for it and if they don’t, fine we keep the numbers down and the former map would have been sufficient. An AFTERTHOUGHT: I’m assuming that the Caches Found Map was available to all geocache members whether they paid or not. I don’t remember trying this feature before paying ?????? 9. OK, I've gone through my list and here are a few that I feel you should be able to find with the current snow situation, that is if you can survive the HIKE: FUNNY BUNNY TOO COVERED BRIDGES #1 HALFWAY "AT" HEAVEN MUSKRAT SPRING CACHE QUARTERLY REVIEW OF THE SWINGING MINI_BENCHMARKS BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS PLUS most Virtual caches, but not ALL......... To reiterate, I was looking for caches in SOUTH CENTRAL PA, ie. Carlisle, Harrisburg, York, Chambersburg & Lancaster area, but feel free to list others, just state their general proximity. THANKS, "PAMAP"
  10. I just saw a thread for New Jersey on this subject and thought I would copy it for those of us in S C PA. The recent snowfalls have made things difficult, but not impossible. The last 2 foot dump will make geocaching pretty tough for at least a week or two, so I thought we could start a list of snow friendly caches in the area. By that, I mean caches that wouldn't be real difficult to find in the snow. Maybe they're in trees, under park benches, under rock ledges, whatever. If you know of any that are FRIENDLY please post a reply with them listed. For starters my PICKLETOWN #2 can definitely be found in this amount of snow. I will post a longer list after I have had time to give this more thought....... Marty "PAMAP"
  11. To the best of my knowledge there is no formal group/club that holds meetings etc.in this area, but I would like to see one formed. I did participate in a Geocache Picnic Event last year in the Lancaster area and it was great with a pretty nice turnout. There is a picnic trying to get organized for April - May at Ricketts Glen State Park. See: Red Rock and Rolls! by Dubbsy and Friends [profile] Marty "PAMAP"
  12. Does anyone know if you can purchase a cable converter to take the supplied Magellan Cable and convert it to something other than Com/Serial connection? Some of the newer laptops do not have Com/Serial ports. Any recommendations/Ideas???
  13. I would just like to comment on this subject. I also miss this feature and I am anxiously waiting for its replacement that will appear in late February. The main issue I have is that maybe features like this should be LIMITED to paying CHARTERED Members only and this might entice others to PAY and offset some of the hardware/software issues that are creating this type of problem. Keep up the GOOD WORK, this site is outstanding !!!!!
  14. Last fall I created a virtual cache and about 1 week after I put it online, I was notified by a fellow geocacher that he could not complete the task due rehabilitation of a structure that contained one of the answers. I checked into this and found out that the structure was to be painted etc. and would be Off-Limits for about 2-3 months. This was my first experience with a situation like this and jumped to the conclusion that I should Archive the cache. I guess that was the WRONG decision, apparently I should have temporarily disabled. The dilemma that I’m now in is how to get it back online. I’ve sent an email to Jeremy 5 days ago asking if he is the one to take care of this and if so, please put it back online. I have not received any response as of today. Any comments/recommendations would be appreciated.
  15. I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find the answer. If you have already logged that you found a cache and a few months later a TravelBug appears at that cache, can you re-visit that cache specifically for the purpose of grabbing the TravelBug. In this case it is close to my home and real easy to access and nobody seems to be visiting it very often. TravelBug has been there several weeks. If allowed to do this, how to you handle this. I know you wouldn't log your visit a second time.
  16. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm fairly new to this hobby and couldn't find any information on this topic. When you finally arrive at the cache site and find that the actual cache has been stolen or vandelized and you are 100% postive that you are in fact at the right place, are you permitted to take credit for a FIND? I've taken digital pictures of all these to send to the owners if they need that to authorize a FIND. Had several cases like this in the SLC, UT area just last week. Also I'm finding that the owners know that the cache is missing or removed and just post a note within the description that it will be restored soon, but it doesn't happen for weeks in most cases. Several of us don't always read the FINE print in the description before we start our adventures. Any comments / suggestions?
  17. Is there an email address/contact etc. to report any caches that are not being maintained. Examples: Others have reported that the Cache has been vandelized (It is GONE)and I have emailed the owner that they should restore or remove it from the Geocache website. No response !!! Also, I'm aware of several virtual caches created by the same owner that is very lax (4 or more days) on responding to the answers being submitted in regards to the virtual cache (Answers to questions) I don't know if I'm allowed to claim this as a cache that I've located until they respond - this is annoying to several other members. Any help on cleanig up these areas would be appreciated.
  18. Does anyone know if this software that was originally marketed for the Magellan MAP 330 will also work on the new Magellan Meridian GPS series without any upgrades etc.?
  19. I just purchased a Magellan Meridian last weekend and have figured out how to enter a cache's Lat/Long and use the unit to find the cache. My question is --- what is the advantage to downloading Easy GPS and is it worth while doing? A brief explanation of the benefits would be really helpful. I read the brief explanation on their page, but it didn't convince me that I needed to bother with it ?!?! THANKS
