Garmin GPSMAP 66 series announced on 2018-08-06
RecipeForDisaster replied to Mineral2's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks, I will check that out. Great idea-usually I use trial and error if I don't see a known chain offering wifi nearby. Some of my issues aren't addressed in GPSrchive... I'd really like it to work correctly, but it seems everything that's not working right relates to software... so shouldn't require a replacement. But, I bought it new, the most I've ever spent on a device, and it's solely an upgrade because of some of the new features... that are not all working. -

No, that sounds amazing, though! I'd love to know where to get that... I don't use GSAK as I'm a Machead. I did just hear back from Garmin and they want to exchange my device. I'm very torn.... I have some money into the device in the form of a quality screen protector, and hours of effort setting up profiles, maps, etc. I know I can back some of that up, but am also hesitant to move a problem to the new device. Who knows if the new one would have the same, or different issues... -

Nope, no phone. Because of that, I really like that I can pull into the garage, or visit a coffee shop when I'm on the road, and download a new cache... it's so quick to load, grab satellites, and pan/redraw the map, and super accurate without much bounce. I like the buttons although I'm good with a touchscreen too. -

I sure hope so. I would imagine it's hard for them to fix what they can't duplicate. I really like the unit overall, but many of the reasons I splurged on it aren't working correctly.... not that "search near" is an advanced feature, my eTrex 20 and Oregon 400 do that well. The live features used with wifi (I have no phone) were quite important to me. -

Yes, it's been hard reset more than once, and it fails the same way in several profiles. I've been in contact with Garmin about the various bugs (mostly Geocaching Live, plus this one) and they requested my Garmin folder which I sent... last I knew, they just said they couldn't duplicate my issues. I had the same problems before 2.50 so they requested I update, which I did... no change. -

Is anyone else experiencing the total failure of "search near"? I'm running 2.50 and it doesn't work searching for a cache in Geocaching Live, in simply searching near a recent find or map point, etc. I only get results centered on my current location. This is quite frustrating. Garmin seemingly cannot duplicate or help with my issues. I tried a friend's 66s also running 2.50 and "search near" worked fine. -
Ditto here. I haven't had good luck with "search near" working, for instance... I select a spot 50 miles away and the Geocache search stilll centers on my current location. Geocaching live is not always trustworthy. I'll download select caches using it while at home online, and they show up in "recent finds" but not in the list of caches nor on the map once I'm offline and in the field (I can navigate to one at a time using recent find but not see them in relation to each other-when navigating, only the one I'm heading to shows on the map). "Search near" using geocaching live while online hasn't worked, only showing caches I have already downloaded and not any just outside my PQ range. I have other problems but these are the ones I am seeking most help with, and Garmin says they can't duplicate these.

Garmin Oregon 700 - strange problem...
RecipeForDisaster replied to chilihouse's topic in General geocaching topics
I do this (on eTrex 20 and GPSMAP 66s) plus, once I've deleted the files and emptied trash with the GPS connected, then ejected the GPSr, I start the GPSr up with no PQs/GPX files in it. Once I see that there are no geocaches on the device, I reconnect to my computer and add the new files. I usually have success this way. -

That's one of the filters.... something like "files 5/5" and you can toggle which ones are in use. I love it. I can see what's on my to do list. In other news, I had to write to Garmin about how to apply a custom filter. I thought I was just dense. No, it took them a while to come back with the realization that they are not working-no way to apply them. It's supposed to be fixed in the next update. -
An eTrex 20 displays a completely blank title if the cache name is an emoji. Worse, weird stuff happens... for instance, if you are able to figure out which cache it really is, once logged as found on the eTrex, you can't see any evidence of it ever having been there. There's no open treasure chest and the cache isn't in the found list even as a blank title. That's the newest device I have... until later today! We have many caches with emojis for titles.

coincidences while geocaching
RecipeForDisaster replied to Aer72's topic in General geocaching topics
We were heading to a group kayak trip an hour from home and stopped to grab a field puzzle about 20 minutes into the drive. Literally AT the first stage, there was a car with a kayak on it, both of which we recognized as belonging to another paddle club member who would also attend the paddle, although we had no idea where he lived. There's an apartment house right there. We did join him on the river an hour later. What are the chances that we'd pick that cache and his distinctive car and boat would be in plain sight at the time? If the boat wasn't loaded we would not have noticed. -
Buying Tick Free CLothing
RecipeForDisaster replied to Ramblin_Man's topic in General geocaching topics
What I normally buy isn't that brand (simpler gallon container, no spray bottle attachment), and there is not much in it other than permethrin and water (none of that stuff to keep it on an animal's coat for a while). I feel quite comfortable wearing clothes that have the dried solution on them... it's a lot better than Lyme disease. -

I've seen my old tip about this make its way around a lot, so I'm surprised it didn't come up here. I have been buying concentrated permethrin at Tractor Supply usually labeled "goat and sheep spray". I was in that department to actually buy stuff for horses and discovered it. It lasts forever and works nicely... I dilute it and soak a bunch of clothes in a bucket, let dry, and I'm good for a while. It's dirt cheap (I get a gallon!) compared to the kind labeled for clothing, and you don't have to use a trigger spray 3035 times to cover a garment. -
Unusual Reason For Archiving Caches?
RecipeForDisaster replied to MysteryGuy1's topic in General geocaching topics
I believe these are the caches I have seen in the poster's state where the web hosting for a local caching group seems to have expired, so there's now a button going to what looks like a fraudulent/malware type site on the cache pages instead. It affects an awful lot of caches, and many of the owners are not responding and editing the pages to remove the bad links. -
Geocache in book (free little library)
RecipeForDisaster replied to ssis's topic in General geocaching topics
The sticker is large and on the spine of the book. The idea of a dictionary being for reference only, not to be borrowed, just works. And who would want to take home a dictionary? Your LFL is so cute and I love the color! We added a Letterbox to our LFL as well. I wish we had been into boxing when we put the cache out, because it would be a hybrid (too many favorite points to justify archiving and republishing) ... that container is wooden book painted as a landscape and also labeled not to remove it. -

We have had good luck with our LFL and its large "book safe" which is tethered in with wire. The book can be locked, but we have not done so... it's actually not obvious how to open it anyway. It looks identical to a dictionary and I labeled it "for reference only-do not remove" on the book itself and on the shelf below. -
This happened to us yesterday, too, but I figured it was because the last time you could put a new Virtual out was 2005. I left it because it was kind of neat. Definitely seems to be a bug, but this particular one hasn't hurt us.

Free Libraries are not always free
RecipeForDisaster replied to jellis's topic in General geocaching topics
Many LFLs have a guest book, but I don't feel like the LFL itself is a good "container'... YMMV. There's not usually much finding involved for the actual LFL, but I have had people take a minute to find our cache in the library... it does blend in! -
Free Libraries are not always free
RecipeForDisaster replied to jellis's topic in General geocaching topics
Both sides of the coin... whenever we travel, we seek these out, and trade the book we were reading for a new one. I think we hit about six in CA and about eight in NH on our last visits. Sometimes we carry boxes of books to add to those which have depleted stock. They almost always seem to receive plenty of attention even without a cache. That said, there is one in a bad part of the city that is perpetually empty. We found another in NH that was cleaned out, too. Our library probably has 15% turnover on its own, without our help, every week or so. We often see people using it, both cachers and non-cachers. -

Wow. We enjoy finding these, but I had no appreciation for the cost involved until now. As cool as they are, I am glad we opted for a big ammo can in the woods for our book exchange cache, as it was cheap as free. Our library is 3 wide shelves and the books are sorted into kids, nonfiction, and fiction. It's kind of cool that the whole community uses it as well as just cachers. It sits outside the senior center/town offices/community center. We like walking up (half a mile from our house) to see what's found its way into the LFL. I have enjoyed caches with trade themes, but our library functions differently than a standalone cache could. -

RecipeForDisaster replied to jellis's topic in General geocaching topics
We own a Little Free Library and the point is that it's free for people using the library... not the ones who put it there. There are fees for the "charter" and sign, plus of course materials and labor or a ready made library, books, etc. I can imagine that you would need local permits in some places, too. Ours is on public property at a town building... it required multiple presentations at several town council meetings over months to get permission for the LFL and cache. We couldn't have put it at our house because there's no place to pull over in our rural area. If someone put an "unauthorized" cache or Letterbox in our library (really anything that was meant to stay in the library permanently... we rotate the entire stock of books regularly to avoid a stale selection), we wouldn't be happy. We seek these caches out and I do think we have found one or two without clearly stated permission and the cache owner is not the LFL owner. I don't know the usual maintenance plan of an LFL owner, but I would expect that they would find a cache they didn't authorize within a month or two. That said, we love owning the LFL even though it was costly and lots of work. We have associated book swap events right there. Having the Letterbox and cache in there (both fake books) has been rewarding and well received. We didn't know we would want to add the Letterbox or we would have made it a hybrid from the beginning. I believe ours was the first one hosting a cache in our state. -

My guess is 190,573 steps. -
I use a normal email address and a "texting" email address ( @textnow.com) that gets notifications as well. That second one has not received a single notification for days. I thought it was a personal fluke. Emails are coming in but not the "texts" for the same cache and notifications are set up in an identical fashion.

I agree, Sweetlife, hopefully these performances are not forgotten. In much better news, the mission leader was extremely gracious and surprised us with a lovely, glittery coin, a PathTag, and a card! Thank you so much for coming through, it was worth the wait and we never thought we would receive anything. We appreciate it and will enjoy the coin!
