  1. I've tried it with all of my different maps enabled (one at a time of course), which all work in my other GPSrs without issue or crashes. Usually the 24k or 100k Garmin, or OSM topo, or BBike.
  2. It's pretty important to me too. I also navigate for everyone and rely on this to route me while in the truck. Mine is fully updated. I disagree with the routing sometimes because of trafffic, accident, construction, etc. so I knowingly don't follow its directions, but it usually freezes hard. Spending my caching day desperately trying to get the caches to show up again, especially while handling that tiny SD card in the moving vehicle, really stinks. I do love being able to wirelessly grab a cache or two... of course I can't sit at a wifi place for hours reloading my PQs, but I like being able to download just one new cache sometimes. There's a lot I like about it and I am sure they can get these issues fixed. I sure would like them to be more helpful and responsive, though.
  3. One thing I can do that will almost always crash the 66 hard is go off course when navigating on road (automotive). It freezes and the batteries have to be removed, and usually, the caches are all gone from the device after that. Worse, a few times, I have not been able to get it to read the SD card after that. I put the .gpx files on it so that I could reindex files on the road (after I had to cancel a trip due to having no way to reload caches... no phone), but I can remove the card, restart the unit, put it back in, restart the unit (of course it's properly placed and locked like always) and still see no caches. Many reboots later, and the caches show up... but it's an hour of miserable work on the road when I need the unit to work. Garmin hasn't answered, but this isn't my only issue. Does anyone else have this bug? "search near" almost never works, whether using Geocaching Live or just the caches on the unit, for another thing. Overall I really like the device, but it has some major issues that need to be fixed.
  4. I always need this for trip planning. I want to view my to do list, solved puzzles, etc. in one place. I use the CacheEye website although it's very clunky and requires Silverlight. I like that it gives me a numbered map and list of target caches. It's worthwhile to me!
  5. My "search near" doesn't work at all, using geocaching live (I get "no results found" ) or just the list of downloaded caches (I get a list centered on my current location no matter how far away I told it to search) .... this has been consistent on my second 66s(Garmin exchanged the first one). I love the idea, but it has totally failed for me. I sure hope they'll use the one I returned for research...
  6. I did apply "show all" to see if my luck changed (at least I know where that setting is now). Nope. I'm pretty good with technology but I do have lousy luck! I doubt they'll replace this again... I guess I can live with this failure, but it's hard to stomach with a splurge on a new device. My only real hope is that when they get my old one back, they actually test it and figure out what the problem is, then release an update to fix it. I haven't gotten to try all of the other features to see whether the other bugs have persisted, but I sure hope not. Overall, I really like it! That said, my old eTrex 20 works beautifully-it's just that the skin is loose and the plastic is cracked. My Oregon 400 works very well but sometimes has erroneous location data, to the tune of 0.25 miles off when it claims to have great signal! I've never figured that one out.
  7. I had thoroughly read the rChive but will look it over again to de how to access Show All. You'd think it be self explanatory as it isn't with my other devices... but resetting it would definitely remove filters, and I had this same behavior right after a reset. Plus, search near should work in my list of downloaded caches when I have my SD card in. I am throughly sure there are caches where I'm searching-the map point I am picking is a large city, for instance.
  8. Yes, it's a custom filter. And yes it's very clear to me that the caches are centered on my current location-I own most of them and are very familiar with them
  9. Yep, the "requesting geocaching information " page is up (before I get the useless list of my closest caches). For a while. This all works when I use my friend's device. I'm connected with strong signal with wifi AND Bluetooth. I have no filter set (this device doesn't seem to have "show all", you ave to manually make sure everything is ticked). In fact, the only filter I really use is non-traditional and all of the nearby caches (showing when I search) are traditional, so that's out. Here's what I'm doing now: geocaching/menu click/GC live download/download near/map point 50 miles away. Every single time I get "no results found". I understand it's not supposed to work this way, but this is what i get.
  10. I removed the PQs from the device and tried "search near" using a map point and geocaching live. Each time I got "no results found". This is a big issue. I was absolutely planning to use this feature-to see what caches are near some place, and grab them on the fly.
  11. I understand very well how to use it and what it's for... I've never primarily used the feature to load caches mostly because it hasn't worked properly. I can try to seek caches near a map point with no PQs loaded, that's a good idea... until I do, or unless I load using a GC code, I won't be able to test "search near" using a cache... nor will I be able to test "search near" without geocaching live, inside a list of downloaded caches. It's just as much an issue to me that I can't search for downloaded caches using "search near" while not using geocaching live. I believe my etrex is the device that doesn't display a tile for geocaching if there are none loaded... I could be misremembering.
  12. I know these work for most people. If I take the PQs out, I won't have a Geocaching tile on the device and can't test. Plus, what would I be searching for if there were no caches?
  13. I'm quite frustrated. I received the replacement 66s and upgraded to the latest software. I added some PQs (on the SD card!). Still, "search near" continues not to work with geocaching live or simply "search near" in the list of caches. I just get the same incorrect list of caches that is closest to me. I wrote back to Garmin but am not hopeful that they'll fix this... they should have better info when they receive my old one back, but who knows if they'll implement a fix when most people don't seem to have this issue. I searched near a cache that's 50 miles away, or a map point 40 miles away , and I consistently got caches centered on where I am now. I hard reset the device (causing me to have to redo all of my settings for at least the 10th time total) but I'm otherwise at a loss here. I had a friend's 66s in my hands a while back and successfully used "search near", so it's not me
  14. Actually, I have found that I can get online directly at the Big Chain Coffee shop. My iPad would have to load the login screen before being allowed online, but the 66s gets right on. There are other options like search near or search by GC code, or my personal favorite, loading a pocket query using geocaching live! I don't usually use these methods, but if I'm on the road and want to load, say, my unfound caches query, it's nice. Garmin Connect required entry of a code displayed on the 66s, I believe, in the Connect app.
  15. It can't be the settings contributing because I reset it a few times and still had all the same problems. Still, I'd hesitate to clone the whole thing. I'm going to exchange mine... sort of surprised that I have to put a deposit down on the new one before they'll ship it (I am not going to ship mine first... I use it all the time) . What are the problems you are still experiencing?
  16. I did that and I find it helpful. I also added profile change to the ribbon. Now it's quick to switch between map, navigating, and the cache. Garmin wrote back and said they'd cover the screen protector I'll lose... and apparently they won't troubleshoot anymore because they think it needs to be exchanged. So, I guess i will. I sure hope the new one doesn't have the same issues! I'll lose hours of fine tuning setup... is there a folder or something I can copy to at least save my page sequence, profiles, etc? I don't want to clone the whole device in case there's an error somewhere with my current one.
  17. I'm a little disappointed with Garmin: it seems that if I don't allow them to exchange my unit, they aren't going to interact with me anymore. I have two long unanswered emails about seemingly fixable software issues. The last message they sent, in response to my submitting a new bug, was that "they had already offered to exchange the unit", and they ignored my new bug in their response. I still plan on keeping it for now... I can get around the issues, it just seems like the bugs should be fixed and the unit should work as advertised.
  18. I don't use Cachly on my Mac-I thought that was just a phone app and I don't have a phone. Maybe it's a Mac app too? if 2.80 makes the hints go away, I need to make sure I don't update!
  19. I tried loading Birdseye once and it crashed the device so hard I had to do a hard reset. I'd love to use that feature but I don't want to have to reset again. I know I found out there was a limit to the size of the card and I got the largest. My camera works the same way, it can only handle a card up to a certain size. I don't want to lose any maps, so I hope there's room for my PQs... or I'll mess around with iCaching if can get it. Oddly, I had a disappearing PQs issue on the eTrex 20 twice this week: suddenly only 1 out of 3 was showing up, and I can't use GGZ on that... so the GPX files would need to fit on the card.
  20. I am a Mac person. I haven't used iCaching-I'll give it a try if it's available for my not so current OS. I'm sure the GGZ file would hold a lot more caches in a smaller amount of space! I have only two issues with this plan-I don't know if there's room for the files (I believe I got the largest SD card supported for both devices) and I load the eTrex 20 and 66s at the same time, so if I start using GGZ files, I have to load them differently. Not a big deal, I'm hoping I can pull this off. One friend confirmed that he was using a GGZ file when I was with him and this happened to him, though.
  21. I've never had this issue come up after successfully accessing those geocaches, on another device ... I do have occasional episodes of having to reload PQs after deleting, emptying trash, and restarting the empty GPSr, because the caches aren't showing up from the start, but none of the other Garmins have "lost" their PQs. I can see if my SD card has room for the GPX files (I have a lot of maps)... but this really stinks. When this comes up, a computer won't be available. It's when we are using devices out somewhere-I've never had a crash in my house. I don't have Geocaching Live when out, either, as I have no phone. The caches were loaded the old fashioned way, with a cable and GPX files.
  22. Okay, so today I developed a Very Bad problem that I've seen my friends experience. The device crashed (I was looking at POIs) and when it came back up, it had NO geocaches. Four PQs, about 3800 caches, were on it, and all were showing up before the crash. This one really needs to be addressed-I'll send it to Garmin too. My friend was out of state and had a crash, cutting his caching trip short when he realized he had zero caches on his device after restarting.
  23. I was afraid that would be a problem at Dunkin' Donuts which does the same thing (you have to hit "agree" before they let you onto the wifi) but it hasn't-the 66s hops right on. It's great. But yes, I'd love to know which ones won't allow it online...
  24. I've downloaded by GC code since "search near" hasn't worked. It makes me feel a lot better to hear that others have had this problem. Garmin led me to believe I was the only one, and not naving it on GPSrChive cemented that thought.
  25. Okay-I think I have bugs vs. questions but here goes. "search near" doesn't work at all. When I download a cache using Geocaching Live, I often find that once I'm offline, the cache only shows up in "recent finds". It's no time on the map or list of caches. I can navigate to it and view its stats, but can't view more than that one cache on the map. For example, I downloaded 5 caches that weren't in my PQ, and they didn't show up on the map together. I could only see one on the map at a time and had to go through Recent Finds to do so. If not navigating, none were on the map-only caches in the PQ. "Search near" using geocaching live doesn't display caches I don't have downloaded already. I tried to use this to download caches just past my PQ coverage, before updating to 2.50, and I guess "near" did work then because I saw caches in the area that were in my PQ, but not outside it. I was online successfully and able to download those "edge" caches via GC code. I feel like there was another problem, but I can't find my notes on it. Everyone I know who uses this device wants an option to remove the fourth digit after the decimal (go back to xx.xxx), but I can see that's well known. I do love using this device, it's really a treat. I've tweaked a few things to make it work more smoothly, which have made it even better (for instance, adding a Geocaching page to save clicks when seeking a hint). I'd have a hard time giving it up.
