  1. Just hoping that I can remain mobile enough to get out into the countryside and carry on caching, I have total body CRPS, ruptured muscles, bulging discs and a painkiller dependency. But everything disappears when I cache, brilliant feeling.
  2. Thanks for clearing that up Chief, I tend to load up my gps infrequently by PQ and then just add caches singly or a few at a time by hooking up to the pc. I also use a Blackberry Z10 to receive notifications and paperless caching and use the above method to enter cache locations to my gps if I am away from home. The Z10 and cachesense is brilliant but I prefer using a proper gps to find with. Sorry for going off the op's questions.
  3. You cannot manually put coordinates into the Oregon 450T and have them be recognized as geocaches. They would be waypoints. The Oregon only recognizes geocaches that are loaded as .gpx files. Off topic for this thread but is msrubble's statement true? If so then I am staying with my vista hcx as I can enter a waypoint manually or by using the unit to get a mark and by changing the icon in the waypoint screen it saves the waypoint as a geocache and shows as such on the map. Very useful for entering final locations for a multi or puzzle cache.
  4. Whether you use alkaline or rechargeable batteries make sure that you select the correct settings on the gps. Maps are easily found on the Web for free, pop it onto an sd card and off you go. Mine shows footpaths, gates, stiles etc. Enjoy your new obsession.
  5. Smart phones are capable of awarding favourite points, I use Cachesense on a blackberry z10. I award points to caches that interest me personally, it may be in a nice location or the journey to get there was enjoyable or it may have been a hard puzzle to do first. I have given a point to a cache that had numerous finds but no points just because it was wet and muddy getting to GZ And once there it was so quiet I just sat down and did nothing for a few minutes, it was great. Later maybe months later, I look back at my favourites list and can recall the moment, that's why they matter.
  6. No, this model does not do paperless caching. I use a vista hcx a slightly higher specification model and that does not support paperless either. What I do is use my BlackBerry with Cachesense app, this is fully paperless and I use a combination of both when out in the field.
  7. It's very easy to log Trackables from a blackberry running cachesense all you need do is select the cache and then select field notes and then select log Trackables. There is a field to enter the code, press check which brings up the Trackables information. It can then be logged as retrieved or dropped, visited etc whilst in the field immediately. So any trackable logged through the application shows up on the cache description without any delay. Simple.
  8. I have cachesense on my BlackBerry curve and the blackberry playbook. They are both different in the way they work but I think that the bb10 version is better. It is a bit of a learning curve on the bb10 but once you get the hang of it it is possible to do more with it. I wouldn't use anything else on my phone.
  9. You can load topology maps, eg from Talkytoaster, which shows footpaths, stiles, gates etc. Much easier to see where to walk away from the roads on the basemap.
  10. Try this If a Garmin mode device will not power on or communicate with Garmin applications (i.e. WebUpdater, MapSource or BaseCamp) then it's possible the software has been erased from the device's memory or there is corrupted data in the device. The Garmin Mode device has a boot block function, which forces communication between the device and WebUpdater and permits updating a device with no software. A Garmin Mode device will have a USB interface in the following series/devices: GPSMAP 60-series GPSMAP 76-series GPS 60 GPS 72H eTrex Rino 100-series Rino 500-series Astro 220 To perform the boot block: Turn device off, if powered on Plug device into computer Open WebUpdater Proceed through WebUpdater instructions until Find Device page is found Press and hold rocker pad/joystick in Up position* Important: The upper portion of rocker pad/joystick must be held down until software has completed. If released, update will fail and instructions will need to be repeated. Press Power button as if turning on device Click Find Device If device is found, proceed through update process Disconnect device once update is finished The device should power on as normal and properly communicate with Garmin applications. *If the device does not have a rocker pad/joystick, hold the Up button. ,
  11. There are several posts on the forum about this problem, if you search you will find some information that may be able to help you.It seems that the driver has to be installed manually by pointing to the driver location when prompted by the install new hardware wizard instead of letting it install automatically. Below is copied from one of the posts I found. Yes it is kind of tricky getting it to work on an XP computer. You have to download the driver from the garmin website and you have to install it manually. Run the program you download, note where the program sticks the driver (should be C://garmin/. Plug in your Garmin. Found new hardware wizard should pop up. When it asks you if you want to search for the driver automatically choose no. It will now give you the opportunity to browse for the driver. Go to the folder where the driver is located and select it. The driver should then install and your computer should recognize the gps. I have had to redo this only once when I downloaded the firmware upgrade. Hope this helps .
  12. On the etrex 20 the map name does not have to be named gmapsupp.img.
  13. Ok from this Page pressing the blackberry key brings up a menu, scroll down until you see compass. Select this and you will see a compass, simply follow the arrow. Other compass Page it will tell you how far away you are, eta and more. There are more context menus on different pages, play with the application and see. I use cachesense a lot, on my BlackBerry and playbook to supplement my gps, brilliant application.
  14. Talkytoaster. That's all you need, put the file onto an sd card and off you go. Full instructions on site. Google him.
  15. Not sure if this is any help but on talkytoasters Web pages it says that the file does not need to be renamed. I take it you have tried rebooting the unit?
  16. What is the name of the file? On my garmin it has to be named gmapsupp.img.
  17. Depending on the ops sat nav it may be possible to use talkytoasters maps on an sd card. Works with garmins. I use a garmin vista hcx with talkytoasters maps and find it more than adequate, these can be found on ebay at reasonable prices.
  18. I received an email telling me that my premium membership had been automatically renewed.
  19. From the local news channel after a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious package placed underneath a planter in a high street in Yorkshire. The cacher had been spotted by a muggle who reported it to the police who called in the bomb squad who blew up the cache. So I looked on the web and found a hidden world all about me.
