  1. I have been tasked with putting together a proposal for a custom coin 1.5"-2" with color logo on at least one side and moto on the other. I know this is not geocoin related, directly, but I figure who better to make a recommendation than those who have made custom coins their hobby/passion. We are looking at a one time order of 50 coins (I might be able to talk the boss into 100 for a big enough discount). I have tried to talk him into wooden nickels for the price but he wants the coins he sees others have. Any suggestions would be appreciated and I will try to get my hands on a couple extra to toss into a cache or two as trade items. Thanks in advance.
  2. Ok, after seeing everyone post about how much easier it is to have a premium membership and be able to just pick your cache and dowload it to the GPSr, I upgraded and got myself lost in technospeak (which I don't speak). If anyone is feeling generous enough to help, I would appriciate your time. After buying the premium membership, I attempted to hook the cable that came with my GPSr to my computer and found that there is no 9 pin com port on the thing. Is there a way to adapt for Firewire or USB port or even put caches on a SD card? If not, I guess I'll need to address my lack of a com port first. If there is a way, could someone walk me through it? I already downloaded GSAK. I tried to search for a similar topic but after about 45 minutes of reading without getting answers, I have resorted to posting. If this has been covered, just steer me in the right direction please.
  3. Seriously. I just moved from Las Vegas and the security and police take hiding anything on hotel property VERY VERY seriously. Unless you want to be a news piece on a blown up cache, make sure you clear everything through security at the hotel, BEFORE you hide anything.
  4. I also use a Magellan Meridian Gold. Put in fresh batteries like whistler said and make sure that the unit is over the cache like you would normally hold it. Don't set it on the cache with the screen up. The only time I have had a bad reading was when I set it on the metal cache. Hold it for about a minute, write down the coords and walk about fifty yards. Come back, from a different direction and repeat to get coordinates. I do that four or five times and have always had one set of coord come up at least three times. Good luck.
  5. and safer. Actually I did two at the same time. One in battery acid and the other in bleach. The acid ate all the plating and turned the bolt black but did not have the corrosion or rust that the bleach developed. Here is a question along the same lines: How about brass tubing?? How do you get it to tarnish? I tried bleach and acid and neither had much effect even after an over-night soaking. This is really odd. When I was in the Marine Corps I could not get my brass to stay shinny for an entire day, now I can't get it to tarnish. Go figure! If you are using copper tubing that is intended for cooling apps, like refrigerators, it should have a lead coating. Try boiling it in a water/vinegar mixture for a few. After that, it is easy to tarnish. My only experience with the stuff comes from brewing beer so it was important to remove the lead but far less important that it shine. This did the trick.
  6. Along these lines, I guess I would be in the garbage removal game, if I gotcha meaning.
  7. I'm not sure who you've been talking to, but you should expect your cache items to degrade over time. And people will leave 5 $2 items for a $10 item, that is exactly the degradation. When I trade up, I'll usually leave a bunch of $2 dollar items far more often than a couple higher priced items. Sorry. Nothing to be sorry about. I must not have stated my point clearly. I'm saying, I don't expect you to make up a $10 for $10 trade in any way shape or form. If you take my $10 item and leave somthing interesting or useful to another cacher, I'm OK with that. Even if your item retails for only a couple of bucks. If you feel generous and leave several items, great, if not enjoy what I left. I left my items as gifts for the cachers who find them. All I ask is that you leave a gift for the next guy. I do carry a couple of items in my cache bag that are in the $10-$20 range just in case but I don't expect everyone to do that. I hate finding caches with broken junk as much as anyone. Luckily I have a 5 year old son who can find value in a range ball with a gash in it. But, I think, a big part of that falls on the cache owner. How many years (and finds) can you let a cache go without checking it. I would love to see USED mc-toys go away. I just don't think that is a realistic expectation. Please, visit my cache and have fun. If all you have is a used Mc-toy, put it in and sign my log.
  8. I am obviously in the minority here but I think that most of the poor trades (not two $10 charms for a quarter but the "T: new pack of Uno Cards L: used McToy" type trades) come from ignorance. If I had not come to the forums, and a lot of cachers don't, I wouldn't have understood what was a good trade from a bad. These forums have seriously shaped the way I trade at caches. I realy don't think most of these people think these are bad trades. They are not going value for value but item for item and view the swag as prizes. I'm not completely convinced that it shouldn't be expected that a cache would degrade over time. I am preparing to place a cache that will be relatively easy to access and I don't have a single item going in that is under $3. I have a couple of items around $10. I don't expect you to put in 5 $2 items to take my $10 item. I expect that the cash value of this cache will be reduced over time. Hopefully, though, the social value of this cache will increase. With any luck, people will leave interesting notes or items in the cache. Now, I do always try to trade even or up but that is very subjective. I take a pack of $.50 tissues that is just right to save me from having to let my son blow his nose on my shirt on a cold day (has happened) and leave a $3 monster truck toy and feel that is a pretty even trade. At the end of the day, WE trade because it is fun for us. That is the same reason we will upgrade a cache when the mood hits.
  9. This cache uses one but it is largely protected from the elements. It was also pretty rusted and the lid did not seal well when I was there. This area gets some snow but not too bad. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...52-9e4786ecfaa4
  10. I just opened up my GPSr. It does not have crap in it. Maybe that's the problem. If my GPSr had crap in it, I might not enjoy this game much either.
  11. Thanks for the help. I should have noticed that myself.
  12. I have recently activiated my first TB (TBQ9BF) and I have put a photo in it. When I visit the TB page the photo is listed but not displayed. I would like to have it display like in TBJ05H and TBJP70. Anyone out there want to give a clue to the clueless?
  13. If you hide it, people will find it. Like someone pointed out. If a boyscout TB offended people, and it did, anything can/will offend someone. They day people stop being offended this will be a very boring planet. I think Corp of Discovery had it right. As long as I don't have to join your church or something like that to log it, I'm cool with it.
  14. I was in our local subway last week and got my stamps. They changed color but that's it here. Maybe we are just a little behind.
  15. Iowa, Mind if I make a few changes and maybe use this. I belong to an ATV club and in early June we are having an "introduction to Geocaching" day. I don't know how many will attend but it would be nice to have something other than three or four ammo boxes and a GPSr to show.
  16. Anything I found in a micro would be a big surprise to begin with. Arond here, at least, they are usually just log book and sometimes pencil. I don't know how large a diabetic strip container is but these are some suggestions. Maybe a gift certificate or a Subway sandwich stamp card with the stamps on it. A free 6" sub is a pretty well appreciated prize by most. I've also heard of people leaving a lottery ticket or a FTF certificate. Realy, just having new cache is reward enough to most.
  17. Neet idea. I love anything a little different. I think if you put a sticker on the book or books saying it is not a trade item but a reference, they would stay around a while.
  18. As a general rule, I think ammo in any form would probably be frowned on by most in the caching community. That being said, almost every cacher I know, proudly carries either a knife (small) or multi tool with knife blade that they pulled from a cache. They are prohibited but I seen them a lot around here.
  19. I don't have an explorist but I put my GPSr in a zip lock bag in rain, snow or muddy conditions with no negative side effects.
  20. My 5 year old son LOVES this game. That being said, we absolutely cannot do micros or virtuals. He can get excited about some serious geojunk but not a rolled up piece of paper in a M&M minis tube.
  21. Got my first ever geocoins today. 5 Nevada coins and boy are they sharp. Can't wait to let one loose. (In a good way!)
  22. cyclometh, I think that's the way everyone should play it. I don't care about your personal politics or agenda but if I did, I just would avoid your cache(s) or use the old TNLNSL. More to the point, I'm willing to go out on a limb and claim that this group of 10 year olds, probably didn't make the BSA policy. Heck, they probably aren't even aware of it.
  23. Wow, someone seems a little excited there. I can't imagine what your kids did to deserve that. If that letter was addressed to the BSA national office, that's fine, but to think that a positive reaction and change could come from posting that log is a little strange. Just out of curiosity, did he/she move the bug after scolding you for introducing kids to geocaching or is it now stolen?
  24. That's cheating, but at least its not stealing. Since they were all listed as in his possesion, I assumed that he had taken the TBs and was holding them. We only found one of these but it was one of the more interesting things we have found. I'd hate to think someone was purposely collecting these things. I had to explain the rules to my 5 year old son and even he realized it would be wrong to keep the jeep.
  25. If i'm reading his profile right, he takes the jeep TB and holds it without logging the cache or anything. So he is documenting his thievery? Wow, he is cool!
