  1. I also have a dell (laptop) running xp. I also went through what you described, by d/ling gsak installed it, run it and it just sat there and said not responding. I waited a few minutes and the program started running. I assume that it was doing something internally, and took a while to complete whatever it was doing. It runs now without the delay it originally had. Same thing here on a Dell running XP. Weird thing is it did OK for a couple of days, but now it is not responding. I've reloaded it a couple of times and it's currently not responding. Any advice? Please see this post I also had one user fix this problem => It looks like (for me at least), that McAfee Privacy Service had something to do with it. After I deleated that program it works fine. Thanks!

  3. I got the 60C a couple of months ago and was bummed to learn that I'd have to pay $75 to get the upgrade. I'm using a mount that I got at Target for cell phones that attaches to the car vents and have been down lots of rough roads with no problem. Was about $10.
  4. Although this is an old topic thought some may be interested. I recently bought a Garmin GPSMAP 60C and thought, "heck, if I bring them into the store I could get one at wholesale". I contacted Garmin and they told me I'd have to but at least $10,000 (wholesale) worth of their products, and sell at least $20,000 a year to bring them in. As a one store location if I could bring in another $20K a year I'd be very interested. But the chances of me selling that many GPSrs in my type of store is pretty slim. Sorry, thought I'd be able to offer some of the local geocachers some deals but it isn't likely to happen.
  5. I've got a SportTrak Pro with updated firmware, a cigarette plug, original manual, and MapSend Topo CD that I'm considering selling. It's a great little unit and I've been very happy with it, but being a techno geek I'm considering a GPSMAP 60CS. I've been offered around $130 from http://www.freshtracksmaps.com/gps-tradein.htm. as a tradein (I didn't know you could trade in a used GPS till I found their site), but am willing to consider higher offers. It's in great shape (Power button is a little worn ) but otherwise in great condition. I'll consider all better offers (it would be a great starter for most folks), and for the commercial folks out there, I'd consider the best price for the GPS 60SC with or without a trade in. Seems most sites have it around $400. I'm not convienced I want to sell the SporTrak yet, but just going shopping. I'm a little supprised at the prices I've seen here. Most don't seem like a garage sale to me .
  6. If you're going to do it in a State Park, avoid Umstead (although it's an easy one in the area) but try Eno River instead. Eno is receptive to caching, Umstead IS NOT! I believe the parks would be more than willing to work with you on it. But it's doubtful you'll ever get a cache in Umstead.
  7. Sounds fun. Too bad I gotta work every weekend!
  8. I tried to visit two new caches (GCD5FB and GCD5F8) and when I downloaded them to EasyGPS and tried to upload them to my GPS (Magellen SportPro) everything seemed OK. But when I headed out to find them they weren't in the GPS. I went home, and tried it again. They still didn't upload, although the EasyGPS software thought they did. I uploaded some other caches afterward and they worked OK. Finally I had to put the two caches in manually. Anyone else try to upload these yet? The good thing is that these were close to home so it wasn't a big deal. I didn't even bother to check if they were in the GPS before I left since it's been so easy, so I'll know better next time! Anyone have a clue on where the problem may be?
  9. I placed a cache in NC Stat Parks after they made a rule. It's not too bad except it requires the approval of the Park Superintendent (and in one case there will be none), and a $25 fee. My choice will be to locate it just outside the boundry or do a virtual in the future.
  10. Many areas have been through the "restricted geocaching" rules and regulations. I've been watching the posts since NC State Parks had to make rules (which is where my former ranger status comes from). Now it looks like Arkansas parks have made a rule. The problem is that parks don't understand how the sport works and there are some cachers who may place a cache in areas that they don't want. County/City parks have seemed to be easier to deal with than state parks. Did you know that caches are banned in National Parks? So on the local level you'd do better to walk in and talk to someone and get their support, so then you may not have to deal with all the rules. While Phantom caches sound like a lot of fun, if you iritate these folks, it may just make the restrictions worse.
  11. Thanks for all the replys so far. But I'm probably not going to have a car (unless I rent one for a few hours), and will be doing business for most of the daylight hours (unless I get a car). I know how lovely the desert is (lived in southern Arizona for a couple of years), but unless anyone out that way wants to take me for a ride, I'm stuck in town. Looks like I'll fly in at night and out in a morning with a convention (except for nights) in between. I'd love to hook up with someone local who wants to give me a ride, but since I don't know anyone out there it seems unlikely. I noticed a few virtuals in the area such as http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=26855 which seems close to where I'm staying. Nearest by real cache is http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=42941. But I'd love to hit some out in the desert if anyone wants to be my guide . Advise to hook up with a local is great, but what am I to do, talk to a dealer in a casino? I'm sure that would go well . Thanks again for all the advise folks. If you're out NC way, let me know!
  12. At least they don't charge you a fee for the cache. NC State Parks charge $25 for a permit to place the cache. They are supposed to be good for 3 months, but mine has been there 4 so far. I placed it near enough to the boundry that I'll move it outside the park when they decide to make it expire. Although I don't like the permitting process, being a former ranger I do understand the need. Some folks would place them in sensative areas and parks are generally trying to protect certain areas.
  13. I'm gonna be at a Trade Show in Vegas in late March and want to hit a few caches. I'll be staying at the Las Vegas Hilton near the convention center and don't want to rent a car if I can avoid it. I hope to gather up a few travel bugs to bring out. Any advice on caches that I should hit? If I need a car (and I will only be able to use one for less than a day, and probably at night), further advice? Unrelated to caching, what should I not miss while I'm in Vegas?
  14. Sorry but after talking to the folks who sell them, I couldn't offer them at the same price you can buy them for direct without losing money. Anyone willing to pay more just to pick it up locally ? Yeah, I sure wouldn't. Wish it would have worked out differently, but they have some different plans coming up and it may change soon so I'll let you know if I can get them.
  15. Yep, that's me. I'm trying to figure out which things to bring into the store. My wife vetoed GPS's! But thought I might try TB's, and stickers, and if there's any interest in some of the other stuff like the compass or anything. Plus it'll give me a chance to visit with the local cachers since I have trouble going to any local gatherings. I'm still working out the details but will try to have it in by Christmas in case any needs to give someone a gift idea .
  16. As an owner of a retail store in Raleigh, NC and someone who enjoys Geocaching, I was thinking of bringing in some of the geocaching gear to my store. Stuff like Travel Bugs and stickers. No T-Shirts since I don't want to stock clothing. No GPS's because my wife would kill me and my store wouldn't be the place most folks would look for them (but I could test out which is best honey!). Part of this is so I'll be able to get the items locally for myself . Would anyone be interested, or is buying them off the website good enough? Any special items you want me to stock?
  17. Yes TB LIA is Travel Bug Lost in Action. I had emailed all four of the folks who had my Travel Bugs and 1 responded that they had placed it but forgot to log it, and a second has intentions of moving it soon! Glad to see that some are on the road and I;m not the only one out ther with missing travel bugs.
  18. I bought 4 TB and got them going as soon as I could. Within a month all 4 had been lost. One to a local geocacher who won't resond as to where it is!!! One was a person who logged their first cache and TB (so they probably did something else) I think it's a great idea and fun, but dadgum, I'm not passing out trophies that I pay for. Most of them still log onto the website. Can we ban them from the website?
  19. Take some Duct Tape and wrap it around your hand (sticky side out) and use that to remove them. Works for me.

  21. I bought 4 TBs and released them within a few weeks of each other, and after a couple of months all have disappeared. I emailed the folks who picked them up last, but got no response. Can we banish TB sitters? Every time I've picked up a TB I've assed it on or emailed the person who asked me about it. None of the folks that picked mine up (and I asked about them after they held it for a month) ever responded to me. All of these folks (one picked it up on thier first and only cache), have been on-line again, but never answered me. I guess if they want to hang it on their mantle it's OK, but at least tell me since I paid for it.
  22. Well a few have made it to my cache in Eno River State Park (after I fixed my coordinates which I entered wrong at first . But I want to warn you that even though I used to have a few friends in the park system, some parks (like W.B.umstead) are a little resistant to it . Since it's mostly up to the park superintendent, if you want to place one in one of the NC Parks, I'd test the waters first and call them to see what they say. It may save you a lot of time. I will say that my experience at Eno River State Park was great and hope anyone in the area gets a chance to visit the cache. The fee seems a little out of line, but I understand why they are doing it. On the other hand, I guess my other ones in NC Parks will be virtual, or out of their borders .

  24. Actually snakes don't bother me much in this area. I lived in Arizona for a while and rattlers or Gila Monsters could be a problem. The eastern part of NC you have to deal with Cottenmouths who are a little aggressive. Copperheads are generally not out to get you, (they look like the Brown Banded Water Snake to some folks, but Copperheads generally avoid water) and they are the only venemous snakes in our area. But Brown Recluse Spiders, Black Widow Spiders, and any bug that your allergic to (bees, mosquitos with West Nile, Ticks, ets.) could be a problem. But to tell you the truth (I've been bitten by Brown Recluse), in this area, if you're a healthy adult, it shouldn't be a problem. Get to a hospital and get fixed if there's a problem. So don't let your kids stick their arms in the hole first . Even though snakes don't bother me, I can still jump higher than Mike Jordan when I see one on the trail (even if it's just a stick lookalike, dadgum sticks!).
