  1. I haven't added data to the "Untitled" file on the computer, just created a folder within the drive. The "Untitled" folder is buried deep in the mac where the working sd card is listed as a separate drive. I have my mac set up to always show hidden files and the "Untitled" folder is within a hidden folder called Volumes. I'll try the formatting option in Utilities and see what happens. I just don't remember having to do all this to the working card but I could be wrong. This really should be a simple fix....
  2. I'm trying to load a new SDHC card 4gb with PQ's of different areas I will be traveling to on to my 450. When installing three different cards (same manufacture), the cards won't show up on my computer as a separate drive, in fact its hidden under Volumes and unejectable. I am using a Macbook Pro. When I reinstall my current 4gb card (same manufacture as the new ones), everything works just fine and it shows up as "UNTITLED" separate drive. I've tried to search regarding this topic but haven't quite found someone else with the problem. There's been a question as to whether the card needs formatting but I thought the device would do that upon installation.

  4. http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Geocaching This has everything you need to know about garmins and their geocaching abilities.
  5. On the 450 you can tap the map screen to any of the geocaches it shows and navigate to it from that screen.
  6. Worst thing I've found so far was not one crackpipe, but two!......took it and disposed of it. Ironically, two weeks later I found another one in a different cache......very strange.
  7. you can create a profile (for free) at www.mygeocachingprofile.com and have all of your stats uploaded to your geocaching.com profile. The profile includes county maps of all the states.
  8. Hah, I sense that was a shot at the Mac....w/e I added the google translator to IE and it's able to translate the page...I'm probably just going to print out the sheets for each cache as I'm going to be in a pretty remote area of PQ. Not like I'm going to be loading tons of caches, but I still would want a solution as I do travel quite a bit.
  9. I'd love to use GSAK however I specifically us a mac and GSAK isn't currently available for that platform.
  10. Hello, tried searching in the forums but didn't come up with anything on this. Have a Garmin 450 and will be in Quebec in a few weeks. The GC's I want are all in French and I'm looking to convert them to english before I place them on the gpsr. Google chrome will convert the listing to english however the Garmin software will not work with chrome and I have to use Internet Explorer. Anyone have any tips or browsers that will convert this? Also, just because it's converted on the browser doesn't mean it will be converted to the gps? Thank you, Hank
  11. Took a pine needle in the eye at night a few weeks back and was two hours from home, had to pretty much drive with one eye as the affected eye wouldn't stay open and watered for over an hour, saw a doc two days later and discovered that I had a fungus that was infecting the eye. Had to be on drops for 5 days, so the answer now is, yes....safety glasses I wear when hiking day or night. Most can be purchased for under $5 a pair.
  12. Lots of good ideas and most methods will work, however it sounds like the CO just has to be persistent in the cache maintenance. Mother Nature will win out in most if not all cases.
  13. Found a handheld Yahtzee game in a large cache as I was the FTF...play it everyday and take it on the road with me....so much for phone apps....this game is great.
  14. I use a garmin 450 along with the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA's.....I cache everyday and use a smartphone as well. Probably turn on the Garmin anywhere from 1-3 hours per day and have to change the AA's in it about every three weeks or so. Seems to depend on whether I'm in an urban setting using the phone or rural with the Garmin or in an area with a lot of skip where I need to compare both devices. Put it this way, I've been caching with the Garmin since late July and I've gone through 12 AA batteries total. Just purchased 16 off of amazon for $28 w/free shipping. Pricegrabber.com or Bizrate.com are great sites to compare online pricing for any item you are looking for....hope this helps.
  15. Specifically hit up cemetery caches yesterday.....why...just because.
  16. I've been putting small packets of silica gel into my containers that absorbs moisture and it seems to be doing a good job of keeping the paper logs dry as well. These are the small packets that you'll see inside of new products (i.e. electronics, small items). I'm able to obtain these through work and thought I'd give it a try, just wondering if anyone else have ever used these or if there are any other methods that work. Obviously if the container is poor all of this means nothing.
  17. I'm interested to see what you find as I'll be in the USVI next summer. I was in the Turks & Caicos about a month ago and did some research before I left and found that a majority of caches were only accessible by boat from the location I was staying, a few on the main island were disabled and one was in a resort that was only available to residents. I ended up finding only a few actual containers and attained all the criteria needed to complete a few earthcaches. I would've liked to rent a boat and travel around the islands but couldn't due to time contraints. There was also a cache placed in 2009 that hasn't been found yet and may be due to its remote location as there are very few logs. Good luck and have fun.
  18. I've been using C: Geo first then had a problem with cache names not appearing on the "Nearby" menu, downloaded C: Geo Opensource and that fixed the problem. Now about a month into the Opensource app, the "Live Map" will always load quickly, however the "Nearby" menu can take 3-4 minutes to load, when it had opened within 30 seconds in the past. This is an issue if I'm in an area where my GPSr isn't programmed for and I'm looking for a cache to grab on the run. More often than not, it's nice to read the full description of the cache than what the "Live Map" offers which is minimal info. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issues with the Opensource app? I've cleaned out the internet cache, turned off apps, etc. and am still experiencing this.
  19. POISON IVY!!!! and my reluctance to where pants in the summer, I guess that's my own problem but I still hate it. Also, driving/hiking to the cache location only to find the inevitable geocaching trail leading directly to GZ. Kind of defeats the purpose.
  20. I've been using the 450 now and it's worth every penny. The ability to store 5000 caches, durability, ease of use....etc....just read the reviews on it and you'll see. The one on sale at REI is the 450 not the 450t which has the topo maps installed. I use the 450 just for geocaching and I couldn't have found a better unit, if you are a hiker then the 450t may be a better option because of the preinstalled maps. I also just got back from the Caribbean and was able to install maps of the islands I was on and it worked great. Uploaded some caches that were on the islands and it worked flawlessly. There are plenty of sites where maps are available for free, some ask for a small donation, so if you search hard enough you'll be able to get most of these maps for nothing. Garmin charges a pretty hefty fee for its maps. Also, using pocket queries on geocaching.com you can search caches by a specific route and upload to this device. I'm planning a trip this weekend and just finished uploading the caches for my route. I also bought my 450 off of craigslist for $200 so getting it brand new for $250 plus the rebate is great!
  21. Yes, I know there is a topic relating to the slowness of the site, but I've had no problem navigating the site as a guest, I just can't view the premium caches, log my finds/dnf's, upload new caches. Everytime I attempt to log on, I get infinite lag.....but I am able to log on to the forums? The android app is my other option however I'm out of the country and haven't turned my phone on.....any suggestions, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem on my end. I've used Safari, Firefox and Chrome and all three have failed.
  22. On a vacation this summer I was at a rest area in Chamberlain, South Dakota in July when I went off to find a cache (every rest area has one right?...I think it's now part of the TOS!), anyways it was getting dark and I was trying to find GZ in the woods, long story short I ran into a branch which sprung my eyeglasses off and shot them to the ground while being eaten alive by mosquitoes, I mean they were terrible. I'm in shorts and a t shirt being just devoured and sweating profusely. I was in a stream and the terrain was uneven and it was just too dark to see 5 feet in front of you. I normally wouldn't care about the glasses but they weren't cheap and had nifty detachable frames. So, I posted a note on the cache page GCE411 asking to be contacted if they were found. Unfortunately I was about 30m from the cache and obviously from reading the logs had taken the wrong path in to the cache site. So maybe if you happen to be on 1-90 going East in the Chamberlain area you might have a peek for me......
