FYI - Since you found that PMO (Premium Member Only) cache, you are still allowed to submit a Found It log on the cache.  You can go  HERE, enter the GC Code in the first text input box, then click the "Log" button to the right. You'll then be able to enter your find and that find will appear on your profile.

    Very cool post!

  2. I bought a GPSr after I started caching on my phone.  I loaded it with caches before a trip to Hawaii thinking it might come in handy.  That was about 6 years ago.  Still have never used it out in the field because my phone always seems to work better.

  3. In most cases I wouldn't even be worried about the container.  It would be more about the cache page on my profile and possible favorite points and all. If I did get ill and be gone for a few years and come back to find my caches archived and containers gone it wouldn't be as big of a deal as if I signed back on and the hides were gone from my page and there was a new owner!!!

  4. Are you are getting your coords that way off of google earth.  You can go into the settings and click on them until you pick the right ones.  For some reason, for me anyways the default one is wrong and I always have to go change it.

I am not saying to get your coords from google earth but that is where I have seen them in the wrong format the most. If you are going to keep caching it is best to change it so you can use it as a tool for hides.

Curious, don't you think not allowing cachers to log an archived cache is, in effect,  locking it?   :)

If you look at my original post I was saying this would be better then removing the coords but I don't think they should be locked or the coords removed. I totally agree with you and dprovan.  I just think removing the coords from archived caches is really a crazy idea.

Remembered that you often mention caching with your kids.  Have they always had their own accounts?  If not,  why wouldn't that kid who remembers that special spot visited with Dad now not able to log it when creating one?   We know only a handful of people who created kid accounts.  Most let their kids decide for themselves if they wanted to continue with the hobby.

I wish I had created my daughter her own account and maybe someday she will make her own.  It would be so hard to figure out what ones she was at now.  I also don't want archived caches locked.  I don't have a problem with logging a archived cache if I have found it.

I'm not the first person to ask here, but for some reason the question keeps getting ignored: What problem? Lots of talk about whether it would be better to routinely lock archived caches, or eliminate them from the database entirely, or just mask their coordinates, but I don't understand why anyone thinks any of those things are needed. The problems people are talking about seem insignificant compared to the various run-of-the-mill ways archived cache listing with accurate coordinates are useful.

This is exactly the kind of minor complaints about imaginary problems that convinced GS to essentially wipe out challenge caches and completely change how problem caches are identified. Now I'm worried that archived cache listings will be similarly wiped out to fix these "obviously" terrible yet completely unidentified problems.

I was saying that would be the better idea then deleting the coords.  I was not saying that I think they should be locked.  I have logged finds on a few archived caches. There is at least one cacher I know who likes to go after caches that have been archived but are still there.  It can be fun at times.

Is the "exact" location of the archived cache necessary?    Would a 300 foot radius be sufficient to satisfy most challenge cache requirements?

I would think a better solution would be to not let cachers log a cache after it has been archived,  Before removing the coords from its history.  Not that I think we shouldn't be able to log archived caches for some reasons but I definitely don't want all the coords from the caches I have found to start getting removed.

There are other listing services and the cache may be listed on one of those.  I once found two magnetic caches on the same sign - one listed on this site and one listed on the geocaching Australia site.

I would say that the fact it was never found or signed would indicate it was not listed on another site but then again I am not sure if anyone looks at those other sites to go find it.

  10. My longest streak as of now is 2364 days.  It is what I really like about caching.  I am worried if I ever end it I might not feel the need to keep caching.  I probably would though.

My daughter and I went out caching and then made a hide.  One of the FTF's said "Thanks for placing this to help with our streak"  I asked him what that was.  He told me not to find the ones close to home if I wanted to find one everyday. I found this very interesting because I work 6 days a week in about 100 miles or so radius from my house in all different directions. I usually drive 200 or more miles in a day.  It is pretty easy for me to stop for a hide or two along the way.  Then my daughter lives kind of far away so I often go visit her on my day off or am going fishing.  I try to never find a cache close to home unless I have to.

There was only one day that I was deadly sick.  Luckily there was a multi cache that the CO had decided to end and made each of the stops a traditional. I had my mom drive me there and I made the short walk over to sign it. I am now to where I have to drive about 15 min to my nearest unfound cache but it is rare that I am off and need to do it, also the occasional new cache pops up.

I do feel bad when a friend publishes a cache and if I am not FTF I might have to wait a month or 2 before I go to find it.  Other then that it is really enjoyable.  If I had not found out about it at the start and found all the nearby caches it would have never been able to happen.  Hope you can make the year!  I enjoy it.

  11. Yea I definitely don't want  to be notified of visits. Some cachers could keep your TB for months and visit 20 caches a day.  I don't need to know that.

I do however see that some might, so I don't see why it couldn't be a option.  I just wish all of  our TB didn't go missing. Have a bunch out but rare to hear anything.

  12. I am as comfortable typing on my phone as on a computer so I don't have a problem logging my find on the spot.  Sometimes even a very long log.  If it is say a FTF and I don't have time to say all I want I might say "More Later" but once I update my log I also log a note saying "Log Updated" then I wait a few min to make sure the CO will get that email.  Then I delete the note. Not sure if that is a good way to do it but that is the way I have done it many times.

  13. There are many different things that could have happened. If it is just on the other side of the trail from one you found then it is to close to another cache to be published.  If it is at least .1 mile from the other cache it could be the end to a puzzle or multi but still would be odd no one else had found it. Maybe someone placed it not knowing it was to close to another cache or something and it couldn't be published and never picked it up. Maybe the CO of the nearby cache hid it as a back up so if there is a problem with his/hers they could just list the new coords and say it was replaced.  Weird thing to happen to someone so new.  Hope you can figure it out!

  14. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I do notice that one some profiles,  the one closest to home and the one furthest away are blocked from others. I'm guessing so others can't use it to figure out where you live.  Maybe it somehow messes this up.  I am going to share a pic of mine but if I come home to find my stock of ammo cans and bison tubes missing I am going to be upset!  :)

As another new user, with a small family, we'll also be using it fairly infrequently.

In addition to the monthly/annual subscription, I was thinking yesterday a 'by demand' option would be good too - where if you found you had a few hours to spare you could pay say $2-3 and it subscribes you to the more premium caches for say 24 or 48 hours.  This way we could perhaps have a cache day once per month and not feel like we've blown a whole month's worth of subscription on the 4-5 hours you might get to use it. (I have young kids so they can't trudge around all day).

    Just a n00b thought!

Not saying anything bad about the idea.  I think it is a fine idea.  I just wanted to point out if they did offer it at say $3 for 48 hours...You used it once per month,  you would end up spending more then if you paid for the whole year.  It only costs about $2.50 a month.

The other problem is that members could pay for the one time and then save all the info for the premium member caches and find them at any time.  This is something you might be able to do with your 1 month you have.

Have fun with the premium membership!!!

  16. Sorry this is happening to you.  There must be something going on if that CO has out over 100 hides, this sounds out of the normal thing to do.  I would contact GS and see what they can do.  Hopefully they can contact him/her to find out what is up. I am not sure if they do that or not but I would hope that is what they would do.

I see you often cache with someone else.  Are they deleting both of your finds or just yours. Maybe the CO thinks you didn't actually find them so is deleting them all.  Who knows. Hope you can get it solved.
