I've sent out a few more than that, and one is still active. It's bouncing around Europe. Occasionally it visits an event, and then I get a bunch of logs from people who discover it.

I've also noticed if they make it to another country they have a better chance!

  2. I had one bad experience replacing a log for a CO. I still don't understand his reaction as I don't know him in person but have found many of his cache and talked with him about glue he had used for one of his hides at one time.

Here is the situation. I find a cache far from my home of his. It is also out from his usual area.  It has a gum wrapper as a log with a few signatures on it.  I read back and someone had found the cool container open and empty.  The cacher had left the gum wrapper as the log.  My daughter and I decided to take it back to the car and added a nice official log in a nice fitting zip lock bag and also added in a handful of nice swagg so it would be cool again. After our vacation I was looking threw my finds and see it is disabled. He said he would check on it. I understand this but I left it probably better then it was originally hidden,  100% then just having the gum wrapper.

I posted a note that we had fixed it up with a good log and some cool swagg so there was no need to disable it,  He should go check it out when he has a chance but as a cacher with a couple of hundred caches out (and many favorites) that this one is in good shape to be found. He responded that it is a CO's responsibility to maintain there caches and not ours and it would stay disabled until he could check on it. Kind of made me feel bad that we took the time to fix it up especially using some of our good swagg and short vacation time.

I still feel a bit awkward finding his caches now. I definitely don't fix them up in any way. I can only hope that when he did go check it that he was at least a little impressed on the nice log and swagg we left. It was found a few times between when it was disabled and he checked it so hopefully the good swag wasn't taken.

One of the things that contributes to this is many cache descriptions contain nothing useful about the cache.

Yep.  If something grabs me in the first line or so I might read it all.  Like this one the other day.  Where they placed the cache was at a spot there son was in a serious car accident.  It gave details about all that happened and also the up to date on how he was doing.  It was long but I got sucked in and read it all on the spot.  But most that are really long and I am in the field, if the first few lines just seem pointless I am not going to read it all.

  4. Welcome to the game!  My advice would be to give your phone a shot.  I have been playing for 7 years and have always used my phone. So unless your phone has other issues it should be fine.  I actually bought a GPS after starting but was so used to my phone I have never really used it.  Instead of spending $ on a Gps I would save that money to someday upgrade your phone.

As far as the kids go, I am a fisherman. My daughter never really enjoyed fishing.  When we found geocaching she loved it and it has given us many many years of enjoyment and crazy adventures.  I really recommend it.  She has just gone off to collage and we still go out caching all the time!

I hope you and your kids enjoy it as much as we do!

  5. Sounds like a fun idea.  Obviously it wouldn't be published for all geocachers (And wouldn't be even if you wanted to)  Just try and hide it in a way that kids that are not intended to find it don't.  I am sure they are good at that. Maybe in a library book or something.

Too bad. It sounds challenging to me.

Nomex is a awesome reviewer.  If he can publish it he will.  This came up with a challenge I made up years ago.  I was able to come up with cachers who could complete it and he published it.  Other times he can't.  He has always been fair and helpful to get my caches published.

One time I was struggling with a Wherigo. I kept getting blocked by puzzle finals. I must have messaged him 20 times.  He was always nice and responded quickly.  I am sure it had to be annoying but he never let on and soon had my cache published!

  7. My guess is this CO is putting a lot of work into trying to make caching fun for others. I bet they are not thinking they are annoying anyone. I wish more people were putting out new caches in my area. If they are putting out more then they can handle in time it will correct itself. I am sure it will take longer, if people start dropping off throw downs but eventually it will happen.

  8. A funny and embarrassing story about our first time.  We had read up on geocaching and planned a day out.  Our first look (later found out it was missing)  We found a box on a door at the car wash it was hidden at.  It had some paper and other stuff in it.  We signed the paper and left some swagg. Went on about our day and actually started to find some caches.  At the end of the day we went back and cleaned out the little box we had left stuff in.

  9. I don't know if you have looked for a local facebook page.  When something like this comes up we will usually post it there.  Most of the local CO's are members.  Someone will usually email the cachers and if no response someone will go check a few of there finds to see if they signed any.

The bad words in logs doesn't mean to me that they didn't find them.  If they just started they might not understand it is a bad thing.  If it was me I would just shoot them a email (if they are verified users) and say something like...  Welcome to the game!  It is very fun.  I see you are new, I just wanted to point out that my kids and other kids play this game and it is to be kept family friendly. If you could you please remove any bad words from your logs it would be great!

If they are really caching and having fun with it I am sure they would just say sorry I didn't realize.  If they don't then  they are not someone you want to deal with anyways and report them.

  10. It would be entirely up to you.  You could plan your party near a cache that you know is cool and there.  You could plan it near a trail with several caches to go for.  I am sure you could find a few phones for the kids to use.  If a couple have the phones with coords and the others could just look.  My daughter planned something like this out with a group from her rainbow thing.  She didn't pre-find them. Well 2 were missing so there was no find.  Then at the 3rd they found it and it was a nano.  The log was also full so no one got to sign it.  I don't think they were impressed.

The only other thing I can add is try and make sure the friends you bring are cool.  There have been several posts on here about a younger kid who loves geocaching.  Then they decide to show one of there friends who doesn't understand caching.  The friend then takes the cache.  The one like your 12 year old ends up feeling bad because they showed it to them and then they destroy it.

Most of all just have fun with it.  I would think knowing the cache was there and somewhat a fun find would be a good idea so the kids think caching is cool and not end up finding a cache that is full of water with a moldy log that can't be signed.

  11. I'm sure it says somewhere that the CO is responsible for checking the log against the online log.  But it is really up to the CO.  When we first started I might have checked a few.  Now if I replace a log it would be rare for me to take it home and check it.  The only time I would look is if I thought someone didn't find it and was logging it as found.  Then I might take a look but other then that I don't.

I guess I might as well ask this now rather than start a new thread since it’s basically the next logical follow up and my likely target audience is already following this:

For an existing puzzle cache, already using the native app, how easy is it to switch to Certitude? Do I just deselect the native checker while editing and then follow instructions on the Certitude webpage? Or add the Certitude Checker first? I just don’t want to do things in the wrong order and “blow up” my listing, lol

I think you can have both checkers.  Guess that wouldn't help if you wanted to audit the log and some used the new checker.

  13. Very cool of you to do! I agree with everyone else that you would just have to buy a variety pack.  I have a drill adapter I use at work that seems to break every few weeks of use.  If I take it apart it has a few good quality O-rings inside of different sizes.  They are usually still in good shape as well.  I take them with me and sometimes will add them.

  14. What I do is get the coords from my GPS.  Then I do check google earth just as a quick reference.  If it is way off then I know I might need to go check again.  Usually it is pretty close.  If it is across the street or further off then I go double check but always use the coords you get from your GPS.

I guess if it is only a matter of 10' you could split the difference if you are wanting it to be as close to the map and coords, 5' off for either wouldn't be a crazy big deal and might keep both kinds of cachers happy.  If it was more then 10' I would go double check it.

I am not interested in visiting the same place again but a "community" may not care, if there is any possibility to earn a find. Have you thought, that geocachers will retire and to newcomers every cache is a new one.

I am with you and very impressed that you have not archived a cache! We felt the same way.  We didn't archive a cache we placed for the first 5 years. (Well one on accident and then had it published again) That one always bothered me and I asked a reviewer if there was something I could do to not have it on our profile. I hated to look at someones hides and see that there were many archived.  Kind of felt like there wasn't much planning put into it.

Then after the 5 year mark I started noticing that there were fewer new caches being placed in the area.   I have many friends who like to go find new caches and I do as well.  I have decided to go ahead and start archiving some as I feel it is needed.  Not that I have seen many putting hides near where I archived them but the place is now open for them to do so.  I am not going to archive any of my favorite ones but if it is not one of our first hides or one that is favorited a lot I am thinking of archiving them.

Again your way of not archiving them is awesome but just something I am starting to do now.

Edit: WOW!  Looking threw your favorite points you shouldn't archive any of your hides.  Well done! I need to take a trip to Finland!
