  1. This past weekend I competed in a geocaching race competition call MOGA. It was basically setup as a punch competition where you run around trying to get as many punches in the least amount of time. The event used to be a mega but has recently downsized.

There was some talk about other geocaching competitions like this. Does anyone know of other geocaching racing competitions? I thought there were several other events in the US but the only one I could find was the Texas Challenge.

  2. Thank you so much for updating Wherigo kit! Sounds like exhausting work. We all really appreciate the work that goes into keeping the website working. Kit has made Wherigo accessible to the geocaching community in such a huge way.

I am looking forward to seeing the updates to WF too. Thank you again.

  3. I propose we create a petition for Groundspeak to update the Wherigo website and also allow the community to move forward with the Wherigo foundation. I have noticed most of Groundspeak’s actions seem to be based upon what is popular in the community so if we could get enough people to support the petition than maybe they would finally allow some changes.

  4. Hi GeoElmo6000,

That does indeed sound like exactly what I am looking for. My photo links all look something like this though:

So I am not sure where to find the "img.geocaching.com/cache/large" extension for my photos.

I goto my cache page, hit edit, scroll down to the bottom and hit "upload image." Is there a separate location where I should be uploading to? How do you get that extension on your photos?

    Thanks for your reply.

  5. Hello,

I am trying to find a way to share an image on my cache page so that the picture is at full resolution. When I upload the image to geocaching.com, the website lowers the image quality so it looks a little fuzzy. When I upload the image to an outside image hosting website, for some reason the image appears as "crunched" or shrunken on the cache page (will upload pic).

The image was made in photoshop and I have tried uploading it with a width of 670, 800, and 669. Does anyone know why this image would be altered? I have tried uploading to 5 different image hosting sites now and they all display the image in the same way.

The second pic is how the letter should appear.

  6. Thank you Ranger Fox! I got it worked out using the first method mentioned. I ended up with a function that checks through a long list of if/else statements to check for each photo. Once the first photo is shown it turns that variable to false. Next, the function is called again and it goes to the next photo. This process keeps repeating until eventually all variables have been set to false and the photo reel finishes. The tricky part was figuring out how to reset everything so that the player can go back and review everything again. I ended up creating another function and another set of variables which go through and reset all of the original variables for the first function.

I have not worked with an array before so this will be a new project for me to learn once this one is finished. Thanks again for your help!

    • In your mind, what is a high-quality geocache?
      • My favorite type of cache is one that takes you on an adventure. A 10-stage multi that takes you around an island in Florida. Rappelling into a ravine to find an abandoned train. A shipwreck along the Mississippi River. I love a cache that is challenging, brings you to a cool location, and has a really cool container to find.

    • In your mind, what is a low-quality geocache?
      • Guard Rails, LPCs, and DNA tube caches, and retail store parking lots for hide locations.

    • What steps can the community take to improve geocache quality?
      • Our local community has really died off in terms of putting out new hides and involvement within the game. It would be really cool if there was some kind of incentive program to get the local players more involved. Maybe something like a geocaching Olympics which highlighted/awarded hiders and finders throughout various regions. It could be included in the newsletter and perhaps even driven by some of the project GC stats. It could also be tailored to some of the various ways that people enjoy the game: county finders, challenges completed, goals, landmarks, great hides in an area, well-known series or geotrails, finding difficult/ high terrain caches, and much more in this type of idea. I would also like it if various local hides were promoted and highlighted. There could even be regional newsletters for all of this.

    • What steps can Geocaching HQ take to improve geocache quality?
      • I would most like to see the Wherigo website be updated. Almost every Wherigo I have done was of high quality and included elements of adventure and story that come together for a really fun interactive experience. I would love for the Wherigo website to be updated and for some of the long nagging issues to be addressed. I also think Wherigo has potential for some really cool features that could be added as well.
      • I would also really like to see a new geocaching icon types. Challenge caches and perhaps something like an EC but for architecture. It would also be really cool if there was a limited release of lab caches that people could use each year. Something like this could even be monetized to help bring more money to Groundspeak.
      • A virtual tour of Groundspeak that players could go on and get credit for via lab caches. With 360 image technology and google tours, Groundspeak could easily set something like this up. It would be a really fun way to explore HQ, interact with the workspace, and also get credit for some smileys.
      • I really love the Groundspeak podcast. Would love for this to continue and to hear more episodes.
      • Lastly, I think the geocaching promotions like Mary Hyde, Planetary Pursuit, and now HIdden Creatures have done wonders for the local geocaching community. I would love to see more promotions like these and perhaps even more projects for the local community to participate in.
  8. I am creating a Wherigo for the hidden creaturs promotion. The idea is that the player will discover creatures by taking a picture of them. I want the player to be able to review the pictures that they take of the creatures on the camera, but I want the camera to only show the images of the creatures the player photographed. Does anyone know how to do this in uriwgo?

I have the item "camera" and the command "review pictures" already set up. I Just need to know how to implement the above issue.

  9. Did anyone get interviewed by Groundspeak regarding Wherigo? If so, what was the interview about? I received an email from them last week regarding a survey which appeared to be about Wherigo. I was not selected and so am really curious to see what the survey was about.

  10. They might be switching out the server for Wherigo.com. I have heard before that part of the geocaching.com website actually ran the Wherigo.com website. If they are trying to separate the two, it might be a step towards something cool in the feature for Wherigo.com! I know its all hypothesis but you never know!

Four of my wherigos still aren't working either but I have faith that they will fix it soon.

  11. The error seems to be specific to certain builders. I have tried to upload wherigos from earwigo and urwigo and these result in an error. When I upload a Wherigo built in Wherigo kit I am able to successfully upload the cartridge. I just emailed copies of urwigo, earwigo, and Wherigo kit cartridges to the support center.

  12. I am still unable to upload Wherigo cartridges. I get the following error. I have tried uploading a number of my cartridges which I previously created/uploaded to Wherigo.com and none of them are able to upload.

    wherigo upload error.jpg

  13. This monkey island Wherigo has something around an hour of music. The music files are started based on various events in the cartridge--leaving/entering zones, new messages, and interactions with items/characters. Although not continuous, I think it does make for a very nice effect. Would just need to make sure to also include stop sound events as well.

  14. I tried uploading a new cartridge this evening and each time I press the upload button the page refreshes and nothing happens. The same happens if I try and upload a new version of a cartridge. Is anyone else having this issue?

  15. This is a pretty old post but I discovered a way to upload all of the corrected coordinates from gsak to geocaching online. I installed this macro.

Note, you will need to add a corrected coordinates column and set all of the caches in the database to have the corrected coordinates flag (I had to use a separate macro to do this for all of the caches in the filter).

Once all of the corrected coordinate flags have been added, I click on "corrected coordinates" bar in gsak under "waypoint" and then choose the "CorrectedCoord2GCcom.gsk" at the bottom of the window as a post-load macro.

  16. I tested it this morning and got sound on my iphone se, sony nexus (android), and on my garmin oregon (with the .fdl file).

Best I understand it is this: the way the cartridge was originally set up, the .fdl file is not readable by the phone or emulator but since it is a valid media type and it was the first media listed, the players read it but can't do anything with it. The way the cartridge is setup now, they read the .mp3 file first and we get mp3 sound. But if I switch over to my garmin and choose the garmin download type from the Wherigo.com website, the mp3 file is stripped from the cartridge (when it is being downloaded on Wherigo.com) and the first sound on the list now becomes the .fdl file.

  17. Ahh I apologize, I had forgotten that .fdl is a valid media type for Garmin. I have not messed around with uploading multiple sound files in urwigo or using .fdl sound files. If anyone else has experience with this please chime in.

I may have found a fix: reverse the order of the media assignments in urwigo so that the .mp3 file is on top. I did this and was able to hear the sound file in the urwigo emulator and on my phone. I have not tested it out yet to see if the .fdl sound plays on my garmin device though.
