  1. I haven't found a cache in a week and am getting the itch. This snow is killing me. Is there a snow plan? How are conditions on the island at this point?
  2. I've been stationed at Fort Lewis for about 2 months now. I'm just getting here from TX. Looking for a team to cache with as this will be my first Cache Machine. Jennifer may be taking our 2 year old down to the shore with her folks and family, so I can start as early or late as possible. KITCHEN PASS! Please don't pick me last...
  3. Is there a possibility of www.geocaching.com doing this? I'm sure they have the server capacity. It's loved by most geocachers. Even if they have to charge an extra 1 or 2 bucks to members, I'd gladly pay it. Maybe make it available to members/ subscribers? Another way to enhance premium membership. They might even pay you to be able to get the rights to it... My $0.02. -Mike
  4. SO now it's geocaching.com's turn to exploit the masses . I wonder how many hold stock in the GPS PDAs we will now all have top go out and get. The wheel was working fine; why did they feel the need to go out and reinvent it?
  5. Plenty of museums and historical areas can be marked on www.Waymarking.com. In today's poat-9/11 world, with each base having threatcon levels, it's ill advised to try to start hiding packages on base. Walking around with a GPS outside a G3 Operations shop is going to be difficult to explain to the MPs. Sure, if you want to try to get permission, I'm sure the CG/ commanding general will consider it; for about 5 seconds. Good luck with that. Don't even get me started on the USAF pilot I verbally beat two years ago on posting a pic of his GPS, coordinates visible, on an airfield in Iraq. That's just stupid...
  6. If you've ever logged a FTF less than an hour after the cache is posted...
  7. Been there done that. I actually have a T-shirt too. I've been in since 1999, my wife since 2001. I'm a vet of Kosovo and Iraq 2003. Jen is a vet of Iraq 2003/ OIF I and Afghanistan 2007, less than three months after she had our son. According to her profile/ or duty restriction, she wasn't even deployable yet. But they need her skill set so she went. Plus it was only a 2 month deployment (though she didn't know how long at the time), more of an open-ended TDY in a combat zone. Don't know how she did that. We're currently apart for a year, me stationed in Texas her in Washington. But we have friends who are in the desert for 15 months, so our sacrifice pales in comparison. We talk every night, I hear my son growing up, and I see her every three months. Like I said, we have it good comparatively.
  8. Great adivice 3 war vet. My $.02... First, the posting rules say do not post a cache on or near a military base. Since that has gone out the window... Don't do anything stupid. Caches should be, "Look for the coordinates on the back of the D-fac sign" or "Stage 2 is 210 meters on an azimuth of 270 degrees from the building you are now in front of". Basically, caches should be more of letter box and less N 49 36.123, E 35 45.789. I saw a picture on www.geocaching.com of a USAF pilot who had turned on his Garmin on the taxi way and had the lat/ long right there for all to see . Don't do anything knuckleheadish and we'll all be fine.
  9. My first post. I recently bought a Garmin 530 after owning a 120 I took to Kuwait and Iraq. I later found the sport of geocaching and the 120 worked great. I thought the 530 would be better. I am runnning into reliability issues. It's slower to pick upp sattelites. More important, the 530 is consistantly off by 20 meters or so, while the 120 is right on. I have recalibrated the compass. I found the defaults and made sure that when I'm under this speed for this ammount of time, it DOES NOT default to the magnetic compass. Any other suggestions? Mike
