  1. I'm going on a 4 state trip and juggling how I want to load the topo 24 and the metro guide and the regular topo cause I don't want to bring my laptop....everything I want adds up to 150MB. I'm really considering taking a big loss and just upgrading.....2 questions... How is that 1GB Sandisk card working....slow? how much were you able to sell your 60CS for? Thanx in advance for any replies.
  2. I have a 60CS, with updated firmware....I've never had to calibrate to use the compass features. I just did a sight and go to test after not calibrating for over a month, and having used my unit every other day (I hardly ever use my compass here in the city)....works fine (although my projected site was off but that's most likely cause I was standing next to a large building (can't be next to buildings or cars...also other strong compass's)) Point is unless they made changes for the 'X', then calibrating is not your problem.....you probably had the compas off by accident (like stated above)....on the compass screen, hold down the 'page' button till it turns the compass on.
  3. If I get City Select for my 60cs this summer (now) will they give me the update to Navigator 8. if not, what is the upgrade pricre usually?
  4. forgot, these are all in 1 week trip... Grand Canyon Death Vally Monument Vally Sedona (sedonya...I gotta check the spelling) Petrified Forest Flagstaff four Corners Las Vegas Hoover dam and I think it's called The Painted Desert...or something like that.
  5. I was wondering if you guys had waypoints to share of points that I 'MUST SEE'. I have all the guest services and standard visitor locations that mapsource provides....I would like you to put me where you stood when you had that ultra breath-takeing view. Also I know it's not politically correct to carve your name or initials in protected areas but everyone does so.....If you have waypoints of your marks, I'll find them (if I can) take pics and upload them....(a signature geocache) My trip is in august (I know, I'm a little early but I'm excited)
  6. ................... ................. .................. ..........uhmmm...........what?? The language barrier might be a little too deep on this one....it's cool, I'll just get the GPS for Dummies, Thanx. Cheers
  7. I changed the language from within Word then swiched back to U.S English. I still don't see any language change...the doc did look promising....you wouldn't happen to have the older english copy, do you?
  8. thanx for the response, I'm not as novice as I thought (got 75% right answers) I think I may have given the wrong impression, I'm looking for a guide that focus's more on the 60cs's interaction with nature...I should probably get the GPS for dummies book because I'm sure it will also break down barometric pressures, altimeters and how they work with figuring information on a gps....I was just hoping for something a little more focused on the 60C series
  9. I am a very basic GPS user who would like to learn the more advanced features. Are there any tutorials out there that really break down the 60CS and all it's features and how they would be used. The manual tells me how to turn different features on and off but for example if I reset my elevations data by the end of the week it wil say stuff like ..max elevation 9000 ft.....I live in Queens, NY......I did not go up 9000 ft. My unit is not broken because is shows the proper current elevation...I'm just not understanding where it gets different values. I basically nee a '60CS for Dummies' with a little general sience thrown in.
  10. I've used a GPS for everything BUT going into the woods so far. Prior to my new GPSMap 60CS I had a GPS III Plus that I have used to travel to different countries over the last 10 years so I could get back to the hotel if I didn't know the language. I just recently learned about Geocaching which propmted the new purchase. Quite honestly, I still have not found any one to go caching, hiking, camping or Backpacking with me and that's because I live in 'The Hood'. Generally when I ask people around here if they want to go camping or treasure hunting (I don't say Geocaching for the obvious reasons) they usually just pause and look at me as if they are waiting for the punch-line. The people at work are co-workers, not friends. When I do work up the nerve to go to Bear mountain I will most likely be going alone. I don't have a circle of friends to set me straight about proper 'woods' etiquette, That's why I asked here. Sorry to stir the stew. I'll try to find a camping forum for any further questions like this.
  11. I'm not really sure what a sock puppet is where you are, but here that's what teen boys use to avoid making a mess. And I assure you I am not one of those and I'm also not a troll. I thought my co-workers were a little overboard and was ready to chalk it up to being from New York. From the looks of things, it's about the same all over except, what I didn't expect was that people seemed to be more concerned about other people more than animals. I was not 'for' or 'against', mine was a question of genuine concern. I'm an EMT in the Fire Dept and spent most of my 13 years in Manhatten, In the 90's I use to have at least 2 gunshot victims a week. Some dead, some alive, some on thier last breath, and a lot of the time we get on scene before PD. I work in between the criminals and PD so I both, respect and fear Guns. Thank you all for your input.
  12. This is not directly Geocaching related but most people who geocache also go camping and hiking, anyway...... I'm new to nature, I'm a city boy. I called the Bear Mountain staff the other day for info so I can start hiking and camping, they told me that they do have black bears and a few other potentially dangerous creatures. Later, when I told my friends at work I laughed and said I should bring a gun with me thinking I was making a joke, come to find out that 5 out of the 9 campers present DO bring firearms with them. I know New Yorkers are generally paranoid, but I work for FDNY and we are not exactly the scared type. What do YOU do for safety in the woods? Firearms, bear-spray, a Bible.........? And how would you feel if you knew that some of the people around you had guns?
  13. I'm interested to know what's best also.... I set my GPS compass to magnetic north because everytime I switch from my real compass to the gps compass I have different readings. I have the same problem with 'lat & lon' -or- 'UTM'.
  14. There are 8 different series (types) of maps: -Topo 24k (very detailed topographical maps, limited coverage) -Topo 100k (Not as detailed, but covers all the States) -MetroGuide (all the streets, stores, resturants, entertainment, etc (with phone numbers)....but no auto-routing) -City Select (I believe it has less listings than Metro guide but adds Auto-routing) -City Navigator (both listings and routing in a newer format.) -Generic World Map (major roads for all the countries) -Blue Chart (Ocean stuff) -Lakes & Fishing (specialized lake stuff) Some series have multiple sets available for different coverage areas. You can load multiple maps at the same time into your 60CS, have them layered and turn them on/off dependings on your needs at the time. All this info is there on the Garmin 60CS page. The manual has some pretty good tips too.
  15. This site (Geocaching.com). All of the caches that I've seen here are in both formats. Take a second look. They are stacked, UTM on the bottom. That's what made me ask.
  16. Some sites I see use UTM and some use Longitudes and Latitudes. Is one better than the other? Why? And is there an overall standard for the world that all countries agree on.
  17. Here are the differences. These are 'Prnt Scrn' scans from the actual program from me. The first pic is the Topo 24k The next is the regular Topo at same area and same magnification...(looks like more info here but........) The third is 200 ft on the Topo 24k and the last is the map with the regular Topo If you want I can post two more for comparison over the non covered areas of the 24k, you will only see the raw base map. On the first pic you can see the squares where there is info available for download. you can also check this link at Garmin to see the scalable map. http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSourc...o24knpeast.jsp#
  18. Just be aware there are 2 Topo versions. The Topo 24k is much more detailed than the regular Topo (I think it is 4X more info) BUT WAIT!!! The regular Topo covers all of the US and the TOPO 24k ONLY covers national parks. ALL OTHER AREAS ARE BLANK. Even if your STATE park is huge, it's not covered.
