  1. I use both my handheld and my phone. I get the phone battery thing!I will use the phone to get more logs than I have loaded on the handheld and also will post my logs at the cache site. This lets me keep realtime track of my bugs and logs. I do have a 310 that we use as a second unit. My son uses that on more than I do but if your still having trouble maybe I can help with a video or something. I will say I love the ease of my iphone just for the simple fact I don't have to push a bunch of physical buttons. Whaaa, I know!
  2. Well, what I found was that I could search for a member but I am not certain how I did it. What I can tell you is that once I hit search or whatever it was I would get the error message then after a small wait it would pop up. I did find who I was looking for. Thanks everyone
  3. How can I search for a particular member? I have tried to go to the "members" tab but all I get is [#10230] You are not permitted to view our online list. I would figure there must be a way>> I hope
  4. For me it depends if I am out for a several hours or not but lets assume I am headed out for a while Batteries I bring more than I ever expect to need Fully charged phone First Aid Kit (small) with duct tape, super glue, whistle, and small antibiotic spray amongst other items Water On the longer hikes I will bring a purifier. I have run short before and its a scary feeling Cliff Bars Good Pen I use the Fisher Trekker as my main Pocket knife Tweezers Mirror Multi tool Pepper spray Cache repair stuff. Nothing bulky Gloves There is stuff I have not listed so this is my bare bones list. Whenever I head out my thought is that in the event I get hurt and need to set up for a while I am able to make myself fairly comfortable without over doing it.I typically hike alone.
  5. The bag I go to most is the Osprey Daylite Accessory Pack.$40-$50. Its a great, no frills lightweight bag. Extremely comfortable and one of the best designs on the pack for keeping breathing space between the pack and your back. My only gripe is the zippers sometime get caught in the flap but I'd buy another if needed. For hikes less than an hour round trip I go for my Maxpedition Remora. A real sturdy and very well designed toss around bag. For those park-n-grabs I remove the shoulder strap
  6. Got mine today! real, real nice coin. Thanks so much
  7. $80.00. PayPal only. Includes USPS priority shipping to US only. The unit is in flawless condition. It is a unit I lend to friends and family when they come out with us but we just don't seem to be using it much anymore so it's time to list it. It includes everything that came with it including the box. I figured I would offer it to the geocaching community before I go to other sources. PM me if your interested. Thanks Everyone.
  8. I feel as though I should pipe in here. My experience, just my experience is that any NiMH battery will dump fast. I use this type of battery in all kinds of high end cordless tools and they give you hardly any warning they are getting weak. They seem to just dump out. I have to assume if you are using these in your GPS the same applies. I use them in mine and it's the same. I feel it's the batteries not the units.
  9. You have some great advice! Although I am new to caching I have tinkered with several carrying methods. The system I found that works best for me is a small lightweight backpack. I use thick freezer zip-lock baggies to organize. I also don't zip them shut so the air can squeeze out of them. I even have a small bag for my tackle stuff that I sometimes toss in. A quick tip: if you use this kind of method I found that if you pack the bags into your pack with the baggies standing on end it disperses the bulkiness and makes the backpack very comfortable to carry. A general list that I carry on a regular basis, 1) first aid kit. serious injuries only. Alcohol wipes, tape, superglue, bandana, this kind of stuff. No band-aids! 2) cache bag including cache repair stuff, swag, batteries (including extra cell phone battery), that kind of junk 3) bag with a cook kit. very small. It contains fire starting stuff and a home made alcohol stove. I like to hike and sometimes will enjoy a warm, bad tasting cup of coffee on the trail. 4) binoculars. I have been fortunate to have seen bear, bald eagles, and many other animals. 5) in the H2O pocket (sleeve) I keep a poncho and some napkins and wipes. 5) in the small outer pocket I keep trackables, pens, note pad, flashlight/headlamp, bug stuff 6) a bottle or two of water and a 2 Cliff bars. 7) I ALWAYS keep my keys in my front pocket, a whistle around my neck, and my phone on my hip. If for whatever reason I have to discard my backpack have these on my person. For me, this works great. Sounds like quite a bit but even with a small backpack it only fills the bag up 1/4 to 1/3. When I first started caching I was excited and over thought everything. I was packing all kinds of crap. Thinking, and rethinking. It just got to be a hassle to work with and quite frankly sucked some of the fun out of the experience. Now, I just carry the basics with a few comforts. I can barely feel the pack on my back and for some of those quicker hit's I just sling it on one shoulder.
  10. ARRRG Every time I find something I like it changes! My first impression is it is very slow and I am not thrilled about the change. I will try to get use to it. I don't have much of a choice. Or do I? Bummer
  11. Thanks for the information. I was looking in the wrong spot. Your right Cachaholic. My apologies. I found a post from over 2 weeks ago tucked inside another thread. t4e, the reason I want to wipe these out is because I let my membership run out by accident so when I downloaded a bunch of caches I did not get all the info on them. For that reason I want to just wipe the thing out and start fresh. I never really know where I may end up caching so I like to keep a few in the bank. Take Care
  12. Can anyone tell me how to remove caches from the unit without doing any kind of reset? I would like to remove all of them not just a few individual caches. Thanks!
  13. One thing I didn't mention. I had a real problem with the joystick on the Explorist. It was difficult to use one finger without pushing it in.
  14. When I bought my first GPS (etrex HC)I didn't want to go head first into a gps because I was not sure I would continue caching. Probably not a bad move but I soon decided to look at paperless units.I picked up a Magellen Explorist 310. WOW, what a difference. If you can afford to get a unit with paperless caching it is by far the best way to go. I am certain many others feel the same way. I also downloaded an app for my phone which I use to log while I am still at the caches, if I am doing a bit of unexpected short distance traveling, and for google satellite maps. The Explorist 310 has done me just fine. It get's the job done. Well yesterday I did it. I decided I really like geocaching and expect to do it for many years so I went out and bought a Garmin 62st. Man, I love this thing. The compass is the bomb and although I have yet to cache with it I did some accuracy tests around town and the thing has been spot on. As a first gps it may be a bit intimidating but as soon as you get to know it the thing is real easy to use. In my opinion if you can afford the higher end units go for it. You won't be dissapointed. If your not sure you'll continue caching or do not want to spend the money they all work. Keep in mind that if you follow a path similar to mine the units do tend to hold their value as long as you keep them in good shape. I have no regrets on the path I took because it was a fantastic learning curve. I hope this may help some of you. Take Care
  15. I had to do the same. If I remeber correctly you just seach BB app world for it and download the real version. I really like cachesense. I took me a while to get to know it. Now that I understand cachesense I use it as my primary gps. The biggest thing that bugs me is that it sucks the life out of your battery so I return to my magellen 310 for longer hikes.
  16. A couple weeks ago I went to do a cache down a bike path and just off in the woods a bit. I decided to do it at night. While signing the log I noticed a flashlight glaring through the woods. I just played cool because at this time I am by myself and have NO idea who it is. Signed the log and walked 1/4 mile down the path. As I went to the jeep he threw his lights on and drove up to me. I took my time getting in the car so he would know I am not in a rush. He asked me if I was working! HUH? 10:00pm at night and my car is parked in the middle of nowhere at the end of an unlit bike trail and the best he can come up with is "are you working" Anyway, I get it. Maybe he was joking. I put on a stupid smile, put my head down and said "I'm geocaching at night" He said, "good enough. Have a good night" and left. I have a feeling I will have more stories soon. This was within my first 10 caches.
  17. Just for kicks I checked out the information. The cache has been there since 2005. Although it does look as though TB's have been taken and not logged it doesn't look as though it was muggled much at all. Just a matter of opinion but with over 1k logged visits I feel it's pretty safe. We did have fun sneaking this one.
  18. Thanks for placing this thread in the right place. I wasn't sure whether it was a trackable topic or general cache topic. Thanks for the advice from everyone. I feel better now. The cache I have in mind is loaded with muggles which will make it fun and challenging!
  19. So I see that there are a ton of trackables that have specific missions. I live 45 minutes outside a major city and visit it frequently. I know of a cache I have logged that is a great trackable hotel. Do people often place trackables in caches they have already found? I think to me it almost sound like cheating but It may be in my own mind. Anything for the cause I guess.
  20. Got my name from the Smokey And The Bandit movie. Loooove the car!
  21. OK, this is embarrassing. I just logged anther cache find and noticed the drop down menu at the bottom of the page. I forgot it was there. A new b mistake. Won't happen again! Thanks
  22. Thanks MrsB! I had already thought about doing that so I don't have this problem again.
  23. Yikes, I better watch my terminology! I tried just about everything and including editing the post. Finally I deleted the entry and when I went back to log it correctly I realized I no longer had the tracking number. Oh well, live and learn. I thank you for your suggestions. BTW it was Mount Lebanon Diabetes tag or bug. I guess it did not have a bug on it therefore it's not a bug? I'll catch on.............. Thanks Everyone
  24. I placed a bug in a cache today. When I go to log it as "placed" it only gives me the options of "discovered" or something like write a note. What has gone wrong or what am I missing? Thanks Everyone.
