Hey folks, I'm fairly new to GPSr, I just got it a week ago and I have a few questions that I didn't seem to find elsewhere in this forum.
I've done a bit of geocaching, found my first one, could not find my last 3. A problem I ran into was inaccurate readings once I got in the vicinity of the cache (one second it is 5 meters ahead of me, 2 meters later it is 10 meters behind me). I assume this is fairly normal, especially with a dense forest and limited views of the sky, right?
I wanted to run a little test of my own, so I averaged my house as a waypoint over 20 or 30 minutes. Later on, coming back from a geocache, I decided to try to find my house using the waypoint. However when I walked to the exact spot I took the average at, the GPS said I was 10 meters away. Is this due to the position of satellites in the sky? In both cases my unit said I was getting an accurate location.
Do you get more accurate readings when you are receiving signals from all over the sky (as if you were on the top of a big hill) than when you are mainly getting signals from one part of the sky (as this hill were blocking a major portion of the sky).
If so, is there a way to estimate how far off your readings are? For example, if you were receiving signals only from the east, then perhaps your reading is more easterly or more westerly than it should be???? Just wondering, maybe this is all hogwash.
Okay, on an unrelated topic, I assume WAAS is not available here in Europe, but EGNOS is. With a Garmin 60CS, is EGNOS available?
And my last question, thanks for the patience. The Garmin webpage says that the CitySelect Europe v.7 is available for my 60CS, and no other European maps. If I were to purchase another map for Europe, say the metroguide or another kind that is much cheaper, would these maps load onto my unit using MapSource and function correctly on my unit (sans autorouting).
Thanks!
Ryan
