  1. Yeah - perfect. I just think it would be sweet for hikes as people tend to mark those POIs. Wow - thanks! The three new waypoint types are added. I ran through your trail submissions, and recatagorized the waypoints. I think they look much better now. Thanks for the suggestion! Here's a link to one of your trails http://trailregistry.com/trailregistry/sho...tedTrail=127132 -Geoff
  2. The trails look great! I love it when people put in decent descriptions! I'll work on that this week. To be clear we want: 1) Sign Post - Icon: Some sort of trail sign. 2) Junction - Icon: Yellow street sign w/ 4way intersection 3) POI - Icon: Magnifying glass? Exclamation Point? -Geoff
  3. Shameless plug: Upload all that data to TrailRegistry.com. Then include the link to trailregistry in the geocache description. -Geoff
  4. TrailRegistry.com just got a little better. I added a feature where you can now show any trail on google earth. It looks really cool if you change the camera angle so that you don't look directly down on the trails. Anyway, have fun all. TrailRegistry -Geoff
  5. I haven't read the entire thread, so forgive me if I'm off base... If we are trying to get waypoints along a trail... TrailRegistry can be made do this type of thing pretty easily, it currently will find all waypoints within 0.2 miles of a trail, and includes them in the trail guide. tweaking the algorithm so the user can specify distance from trail/road, etc is pretty easy. http://www.trailregistry.com/trailregistry...ineraryId=79795 Unfortunately for long highways, the algorithm is brute-force, so it might take a while. But it probably wouldn't be that bad. If geocaching wanted to do some sort of data sharing, I could provide this feature for them. I do think our two websites could seriously benifit from each other... -Geoff
  6. Thanks... I'll definately change that color, I agree, it's too hard to see.. I'll have to make it red or something. I'll add in the Texas info as soon as someone adds a Texas trail (Hint, Hint). -Geoff
  7. whoops, I forgot the link: http://www.trailregistry.com Click on any trail, then click on "Google Map" above the TrailRegistry map. -Geoff
  8. Hello All, I just finished updating TrailRegistry.com so that users have the option of viewing trails and waypoints on google maps. I think people will find this pretty usefull epecially if they want to see thier tracklogs in Satelite or Hybrid mode. Also, I've added a quick hack that will overlay Topo rings on a Google map. It's slow and buggy, but also pretty neat. Go to any trail in TrailRegistry, and click on the "Google Map" link above the TrailRegistry map. Also, I'd love to get some feedback, I know you all (geocachers) are the people that get the most benefit out of TrailRegistry, and I'd love to hear your comments and feedback. -Geoff
  9. What format is the trail currently in? It really doesen't matter if the trail is split or not.. I tend to go back into the system and clean up trails donated by users. Part of the normal clean up process is splitting long trips into individual trails, or joining small segments into full trails. -Geoff
  10. Easy GPS will work.. The problem with the free version is that it deals with GPS routes, and not GPS tracks. The difference is mainly that routes have fewer points, and therefore, are less accurate. It will work tho. I believe Expert GPS will do track logs. I think you can also use GPSBabel. TrailRegistry also supports g7toWin format... Though it's not quite as easy to use. If you have a GPS program that allows you to import tracks and waypoints in GPX format, than you can simply click on the download link at the top of any trail page in TrailRegistry, and you will get the trail as a Track, and all the waypoints along the trail. -Geoff
  11. Are people interested in downloading trail maps to thier gps before going out Geocaching? -Geoff
  12. Howdy all. I maintain a web site most of you may find usefull. It allows users to create and share maps from GPS track logs. The site currently uses trail data from many sources including the USGS, GPS track logs. Please give it a try: TrailRegistry TrailRegistry currently has many many trails in New York and New Hampshire, and a smattering of trails in the rest of the US. Anyone can add trails to the database by uploading a GPS track log in GPX format. Please check it out, and tell me what you think. Thank you, -Geoff
  13. I'll be supporting other formats soon, and I'll also convert them myself (You'll still get credit for the trail) if you mail them to me. What other formats should I support? http://www.trailregistry.com AT GA>ME 2001
  14. I'm trying to build a website of hiking maps. Currently I'm using data from the Appalachian Trail Conference, the USGS, and GPS track logs. If you have a track log of a hiking trail, please consider donating it. To read more about the site, go to http://www.trailregistry.com/trailregistry/about.jsp More importantly, I'd like to know what other GPS users think of the site. Please, I'd love to hear you comments and criticisms. Thank you, -Geoff http://www.trailregistry.com AT GA>ME 2001
  15. I posed the same questions to Garmin Support, and here is the response. I now have on on order from REI. -Geoff ---------- Thank you for contacting Garmin: Yes it uses the same cable as the eTrex series, Yes it will give altitude as a part of the tracklog properties, Yes it does have the same transfer protocol as other handheld Garmin devices. Please understand that the 201 will give you these features, but the 101 DOES NOT have ANY interface options with a computer! So you Must get the 201 for these features. Thank you and Best Regards --------------------
  16. I've put toghether a website that has interactive maps and guides http://www.trailregistry.com The maps on my site come from USGS maps, and donated GPS data. Currently the GPS I'm using to map trails out is a Garmin Vista, which IMHO is an awesome unit, unfortunately, at 350$ I can really only afford one. I have friends of mine who offer to take my GPS hiking with them, so I need to buy another GPS unit. I see that garmin is now offering a Gecko with WAAS for 150$ (Yay!). But before I drop down the cash on this unit, I need to know somethings about it.. I'm hoping someone out in geocache land has one, or knows somehting about it. 1) Does it use the same data cable as the other etrex units? 2) Will it give me a track log in 3 dimensions? I _need_ altitude profiles. 3) Does it use the same protocol as the other etrex units? Specificly, will I be able to use g7ToWin to download the track logs and waypoints? Any help would be great, Thanks, -Geoff
