  1. Quick question. From time to time, I decide to do something very spur of the moment, like I wake up and say I feel like going to this State Park or heading up to do a hike somewhere and figure it'd be nice to try and do some geocaching so I go to set up a pocket query based on that activity. Sometimes I get the results emailed ASAP other times it can take longer (like after I've left).

It'd be nice if I could run the query right away, anyone else agree? I could understand if GC had an "allowance" of instant queries (like maybe 5 per month or something) otherwise everyone would probably instantly run their query, but does anyone else think this is a good idea?

  2. I just got the email as well. Obviously the guy is spamming. Maybe he had a bad experience himself or knows someone who did. IMHO, there is a shred of truth to what he's saying.

I personally don't do "urban" caches or even "suburban" and stick to the woods. It's the sad reality that people don't hesitate to call the police every 30 seconds and the general fear of LEO's.

    Common sense isn't so common.

  3. I joined a while ago and used to peruse the forums regularly a while ago (5ish years ago). Just getting back into reading the forums again and geocaching. I am surprised by how many discussions there are regarding rules, guidelines, moderators, reviewers, etc.

I guess it's a good thing, a sign of a growing game with lots of people but, as with everything, sometimes you wish things were simpler.

Have you noticed things change? Maybe for me it's more apparent because I was out for a while...

  4. I just tried to search the forums for "60csx case" and got a message saying

One or all of your search keywords were below 5 characters or you searched for words which are not allowed, such as 'html', 'img', etc, please go back and increase the length of these search keywords or choose different keywords.

This kind of doesn't make any sense to me?

  5. I have a Garmin etrex Vista HCx. As a basic member of geocache.com I cannot create a pocket query. Before I invest the money for a premium membership, I would like to know if my GPS can support pocket queries. Does anyone know?

Are there any screenshots available to show me what a PQ on this unit would look like?

Thanks for helping a newbie :(

Pocket Queries + GSAK (http://gsak.net/index.php) + Your Garmin should work fine.

If you want to get a "proof of concept". Download GSAK (free demo) and get a couple of waypoints into it and then send them to your garmin. GSAK 100% works with pocket queries.

  6. First the caveats:

    1) I am not an expert on Magellan's as I haven't owned one

    2) Even though it's redundant, I don't own the Explorist GC.

That being said. I looked at magellan's website:

    http://www.magellangps.com/exploristgc/#1

And it looks like it has a pretty solid set of features and does support paperless caching (meaning it can download the hints, description, past logs, etc) and it says it can store up to 10,000 geocaches.

Any unit you get you'll want to get a premium membership because it gives you pocket queries which allows you download tons of caches at once based on criteria you pick. I've always been a garmin fan, but it looks like a nice unit. Perhaps someone who has direct experience will chime in :P

  7. Which do you prefer...touch screen or toggle button and why? Tried a Magellan with that little toggle button in the center and did not like it at all. The Garmins seem to have a nicer toggle pad at the center of their handheld. The Magellan also didn't show a flag at cache (we've been using our Garmin 650 with lousy battery life!) so we didn't know which way we were headed and even after reading 26 pages of instructions, could not get the hang of it.

Soooo, we DID like the paperless part of it and have been looking at the Garmin 62s but that's a bit out of our Social Security price range. If anyone has a Garmin good working paperless GPS but is upgrading to a newer GPS, we'd be interested in talking price with you. Would also like suggestions on inexpensive yet reliable paperless GPS.

Once you narrow it down to a few units, the garage sale section might be the place to search around for used units people are offering up for sale:

  8. No problem, the 60csx is sitting right here so if you come up with other questions, post them up.

If not me, someone will surely have the answer.

You should also look into GSAK www.gsak.net

It goes great with the 60csx, as does getting a premium membership from geocaching.com

  9. I have a 60csx. I got mine recently but have been using them for years. They, as most garmins are, very reliable and well constructed. The 60csx is pretty easy to use and relatively snappy when switching from screen to screen. I have no regrets about my purchase overall.

That being said, there are two things that you should consider:

    1) The 60csx has a maximum limit of 1000 geocaches that it can store at once. That's either a TON or not enough depending on how long you're away from the computer and how you intend to use it

    2) The 60csx IS NOT paperless. That means you'll have to find some other way to carry hints, description, and last log finds. This may include printing, a PDA, or some work-arounds involving GSAK/loading points of interest. There are tons of threads on going semi-paperless with the 60csx but it has its limits.

Many of the newer units support paperless caching by design.

Those are the two specific things regarding the 60csx and geocaching. As far as boating, all units will generally do fine. Because you're out on the water you rarely have any overhead obstructions so getting a position fix is no big deal (I've sailed with various GPS units). If you're looking for more like marine charts, interfacing with a laptop, etc, then more research is probably needed.

  10. They should start closest, and work out, until there are 500.

However... If there are too many the PQ may 'freeze' and you get none!

If there are 1,000 in a 50 mile limit, I suggest making it a smaller radius, say 30 miles.

Once you have a PQ set with your preferences you can run it without selecting a day to run, and look on the search page to see if it gets you the results you want.

Edit to get what you expect.

Once things are as you want them select day to run and wait for it to be delivered.

(A PQ can be delivered with 1,000 caches -did you know? Or will your GPS only take 500?)

Perfect thanks, I don't know if there's 1000. I was just wondering how it works.

I thought I read, when I was setting up the PQ's, that it would only deliver 500 or less to me by email?
