  1. We don't let the snow stop us. Sometimes we don't find the cache, sometimes we do. The level of difficulty does go up a bit, but sometimes others footprints help a bit. Last year we had a couple DNF's along with a bunch of finds. There hasn't been much snow yet, but we have still been going out the couple weekends that there were a few inches. Just dress properly, be prepared, enjoy what nature has to offer us and have fun!

  2. I want GCABCDE!

    That's funny.

You could try for GC12345 as well.

Since I am obviously avoiding actually working today, I started wondering if there were ever words made with the GC numbers.

I found GCRAZY, but it is archived now.

I found one last summer: GCHEVY

    Surely this is not normal?

But my main question is - Does Jeep allow the same cacher to use the same travel bug to enter their constest over and over each month?

If so they could discourage people who hold onto the jeeps by disallowing multiple entries by same person and same jeep.

It shouldn't be the norm, but unfortunately it is...

Jeep only allows you to enter the contest if you found it in a cache and then place it in a cache (at least that's what i remember the rules to be).

The problem is that people keep them for the numbers, and think it's "cool" to bring 4 or 5 or more to an event for only people to "discover" them and then take them home until the next event...I was at an event last weekend, and someone had two of the green ones, and a yellow and white one (they gave away the yellow and white one to be placed somewhere i guess), I asked them in a round about way if i could take one to place, and they politely said 'no', so I cringed and walked away....IMO sad...

  4. Is there a better way??

    Marc

I don't know if it's better, but here is what I do.

I usually just open up google earth do a search on the particular town (or address) i would be visiting, and get the coords from there, and use that to do a search on.

  5. ...on the other hand - if the cachers used a GPS, or some other means of locating and logging a geocache - whether posted on the website, reviewed, or approved - they did, in fact find a geocahe.
So by this context gc.com being a listing service, me finding a terracache (which is really just another name for a geocache) during a gc event, than I could log it in the event, since it's not listed on gc.com, but I found it during an event.

You are making the assumption that the event cache owner would allow you to take this action.

And if it was fine with the owner does that make it OK to use this website's resources to keep track of caches listed elsewhere?

I would like to add to the last question above by briansnat:

    Or not listed all?

If some one is concerned with how many caches they have found and use the website as their means for keeping track of them I see no problem with it.

I keep my own log book at home for other finds and temp caches.

  7. Well I was at the event questioned by the OP. Both me and my brother attended and we each wrote 1 attended log. I personally don't believe that there should be more than 1 attended log for an event. You can only attend an event once.

There were a bunch of temp caches set up for the day. I didn't do any of them b/c I had enough permenent caches around town for me to have fun and keep busy for the day. If I would have done any of them, they would have been notes...as an after thought, I probably should have done a few and made myself and example of what I think is right.

I heard a few people talking about multiple logs to newer people, and I just cringed and walked away. Maybe I should have voiced my opinion, but I've only been caching for 12 months, and didn't want to cause any issues being one of the new guys.

On another note, I had our first event, a CITO, last April. We worked with the park ranger (who geocaches) to place 3 new perminate caches for the event. No multiple logs.

edited to add: Geocaching.com is a listing service, if your caches are not listed on the service, why would you be able to add that to your gc.com found numbers? IMO, logging an event cache for temporary caches would be like me logging a cache twice b/c I found the Letterbox 100 ft from it, or logging a cache twice b/c I found a terra-cache that isn't listed on gc.com.

I tell you all this because I need some help, and with several of you being dog experts, I know I'll get it.

CR does not want a dog. Period. I would really like a dog, but I am not a big fan of slobber and smell (this dog stinks)! Is there a way to get him to slobber less?

I have two cats. I brought the dog in, and as long as I am in the room, he will lay on the towel I put down for him. He is very interested in the cats (who are avoiding him), but knows I want him to stay on the towel. How do I get him to stay put when I am out of his sight?

    ...

If I could get the smells under control, I might have a shot at getting CR to let me keep him.

    Sissy

Not much you can do about slobbering...It's part of the dog. I have a Boxer, which has big jowles <sp> and she slobbers quite a bit. We just keep a couple old rags/towels around and wipe her off when the slobber starts running.

As far as the smell. It probably needs a bath...or 2 or 3...

We have a cat too, and they tend to not "like" or trust a dog, but with time, they seem to get over it.

Having the dog stay put when you are out of sight is tricky. You need to start with a command (i.e. Stay) and a hand gesture helps too. I use my palm facing the dog, like the old "talk to the hand..." gesture.

Once you get the dog to sit or lay down and use the Stay command, back away from the dog, and if it trys to get up, go back to him and start over. Now when you leave the room, I usually just hide right around the corner and when I hear the dog get up, I show myself and say "NO", and start over again. Some dogs, it can take 1hr or less (like one of my dogs) and others can take weeks of practice (like my other dog). Rinse, lather, repeat...HTH's.
