Firstly make sure you are not seen prodding and poking about for the cache. This is quite tricky in a lot of cases. A lot of the time this is when you are most likely to give the game away. Before you start digging through the undergrowth circle around a couple to times to verify your GPS is giving a good reading so you do not waste time looking in the wrong place.
When you find some likely locations- And lets face it once you have done a few you tend to be able to identify most likely places (In Evergreen trees, tree stumps, under logs) Then have a quick look while your pal/wife/kids/significant other keeps a lookout. It pays to properly read the cache desription as sometimes this will give you clues as to what type/colour of container you are looking for and its dimensions.
Removing the cache is usually the easy part. Again have somebody keep lookout and grab it quickly as you can. Then conceal in under your jacket and walk away from the site. Try to find somewhere at least 100 ft away that gives you a view of the cache site in case another cacher turns up (Unlikely but increasingly possible thesedays). If you identify somebody with a GPS who is obviously looking for the cache than let them know you have it and suggest to them you will hide it again to allow them to search for it. That's better than giving the location away.
Opening the cache is not the real problem as they often are in tupperware boxes so resemble packed lunches. This is also a good opportunity to have a drink to make the process of opening the cache more like you are stopping to have a snack. Even if you do raise suspicion all you have to do is wait for the person who is eyeballing you to go and then hide it.
On a couple of occasions I have given up on a cache beacuse there were too many people about. If this is the case bite the bullet and give up the search. To reduce the risk of this happening read the notes on the cache page before you attempt it. If other people have commented on how busy the area is visit it early or late or when it is raining.
I have never given the game away but if I did I would think two options are open to you. Re-hide the cache in a safer location and take an accurate waypoint measurement using the 'Average' option on your GPS or take the cache with you (If it is local to you. In both situations inform the person who placed the cache as soon as possible and return to cache to them or provide new location information.
One last thing. Ignore Pids comment about nightime caching. I tried it last week in a dark wood and it scared the hell out of me. I have said this before and will say it again Pid is totally nuts and any advice he offers should be ignored

But seriously I was a little obsessive about the hobby last year. I could not cope with more than a few days without doing a cache. During the winter months I have given it a bit of a rest. In fact this weekend I have done 6, more than I have done for a long time. The problem with racing around every spare minute you have doing caches is that you loose touch with why you are doing it in the first place (Not to mention loosing touch with your family and friends!).
I have also come to terms with the fact that caches are going to appear faster than I can do them(Unless I win the lottery and never have to work again
).In Summary there are two approaches to this hobby. One is similar to an Alcoholics approach to drinking the other is like a wine connoisseurs approach to drinking. I like to savour the hobby rather than drown in it.
Of course I could be talking a lot of twaddle!!

I don't know how many caches you have put out but why not do a real hum-dinger of a cache in Yorkshire. Spend some time planning it and bask in the praise everybody gives you for such a good cache!!

If you are willing to hop on a train then I would suggest you do the Tomb Raider - Mission I cache (GC2843). It is in Brookwood Cemetry (Where a lot of the Graves are for allied forces lost in various wars) and some really stange tombs. It's a massive cemetry and is realtively easy to get to from London. All you ned to to is get a tube(Subway I think you call it!) to Waterloo and get on a train that stops at Brookwood station( Takes about 45 minutes from Waterloo). Brookwood station is right next to the cemetry. It's got to be one of the best caches I have done.
There are a few 'real' caches in London. Most of them however are vitual caches. I have only been caching in London once so there are probably other people better qualified to give you tips on caches worth visiting.

Nice to see so many people at the event. Sad I could not talk to everbody. Soon as that clue for the cache was mentioned everybody left like rats down a drainpipe. BTW- Is that cache part of the event cache or can it be scored as another ;-) ???

Although I do not have children I always ensure that what I put into a cache reflects that a lot of the time children may be first to open it.
So I do not put any of the following in caches I find:
Knives- It is up to the parents if they feel their children can have penknives. Don't put them in caches.
Adult material- Already covered. Lets try to keep the young cachers away from this stuff until it is appropriate for them to see it. The reason this stuff is top shelf is to prevent the vertically challenged youngsters from seeing it. Most newsagents put this sort of stuff in plastic bags that conceal the dubious covers.
Matches- How would you like to see the wood your cache/the cache you have just found burnt down?
Fireworks- Pretty obvious why not really.
Foodstuffs- Tins of stuff is acceptable but they all will have a sellby date so it is not a great idea. Any soft packaged stuff could get tampered with by non cachers. There are some sick people about.
Drugs/Pills- This can be a innocent as paracetamol. Any pill is a no-no. Putting illegal drugs in a cache is so wrong I do not know where to start.
In summary anything a child could misuse or injure themselves on should not be put into a cache. If I find any of these items in a cache I will remove it.
Lastly using caches for profit is a surefire way of getting you barred from geocaching.com.
Well there we go. If all you new cachers stick to these guidelines you will not go far wrong.

The Reading Evening post did an article on Geocaching today and referred to the forthcoming 'Inside Out' prgram that had Geocaching in it. My friend says the prgram will show photos from a camera contained in a local cache. Which one is it? I'm just curious.

I have got 38 photos to add at present. Not too far off being ready to build it. I have a few choices here.
1: I can add the new photos to my first screensaver and re-produce it. If I do this it will probably grow to about 100Mb.
2: I can produce a second screensaver with just the new photos
Let me know what you would prefer.

I agree that there are not many photos of caches in the North which is a shame as some of the best scenery in the country it up there. If there are any potential contributors who have photos of Caches in Wales, The Northern counties of England and Scotland I would really appreciate photos. I really want to travel North to do some caches but unfortunately I have little time at present as I am in the middle of a house move and looking for a job as my company has started laying people off.
As for putting it on GeocachingUK- No problems with me if Mark has approximately 50Mb free and you guys have Broadband. If you have broadband and want to download a copy then let me know and if Mark can't do it I will get some webspace.
If you want to redistribute the Screensaver then all I ask is that you make sure you copy the whole CD contents, check it for viruses and include the paperwork as well.
I currently have 15 photos for the Hidden Treasures 2. I want at least 50 before I release it. The photos can be of anything that can be attributed to finding a particular cache. Views are great but I havent got many Urban cache pictures yet..

My first TB was placed at the O pond on 1st April and was picked up and logged by a cacher but still has not been dropped off. Am I unreasonable to be a little annoyed that it has not yet been placed and after a number of very poilte enquiries to the team who picked it up?

Hidden Treasures screensaver-
The screensaver is now ready. I have placed copies of it in a number of caches in South Dorset. Anybody who has contributed to it can obtain a copy be emailing me a postal address and I will be more than happy to send a copy. If you did not submit and want a copy send me a begging mail of look out for it in a cache near you. I may even make a screensaver TB.
I will be producing another screensaver with further submissions so please feel free to send more photos to chris@franklin.fsbusiness.co.uk.
Do not worry about reducing the size of the photo.
I am unable to post the screensaver on my website as it is over 50Mb and BT STILL have not put up ADSL Broadband in my area.

I am also assuming you did not stamp on it after you through it to the floor. I must admit I have been sorely tempted from time to time ;-).

I have two units. The eMap I use in the car to get me close to the cache. The road mapping is very useful, but I find it frustrating that when you zoom out on it all the small roads disappear, which means you have the choice of a small map, full detail without being able to see the waypoint on the scrren or a large map with not enough detail to show you the road to the Cache. Incidentally Garmin do not offer Topographical maps (only streetmaps) for the UK at present though this may change next year. I purchased the Summit to give the wife some enjoyment (and me some competition) when we go caching and for the electronic compass. It is great. When I stand still the arrow pointing towards the waypoint stays. This is a real help when you have poor reception and you have to keep waiting about for the GPS to pick up the signal.
I very recently purchased my Summit from gpswarehouse.com. They price matched globalpositioningsystems.com who were about £10 cheaper on the Summit. I have searched high and low for cheaper sites than these and have failed to find one. Try to purchase from globalpostitioningsystems.com as they have a retail outlet and their own brand of acessories such as data cables and car mounts which cost less then Garmin branded stuff. Both online stores charge £6-50 for insured delivery. Both sites are in the UK. I have used both sites and they were reliable and quick to deliver (when item is in stock).
I rated the following things when choosing the Summit as a GPSr
-Electronic Compass
-Same Cables as my eMap so no new cables were required
-Waterproof (The eMAp is not).
If you by a Garmin with Mapping you will only get streemaps until sometime next year when the UK Topo maps are **supposed** to be released by Garmin. You'll have to ask someone else about Magellan units.

My 'Roaming Roman' TB has been in the hands of team Nia since April 1st this year. I am not particularly happy about it but have kept my mouth shut (until now)and dropped them a mail from time to tim to try and find out what is happening. I never get a reply. Judging by their account access they are still in the hobby.
Team Nia if you are reading this please let me know what has happened to my TB!!!

I just got a chain Email that looks like it has been sent to a number of other Geocachers. I don't know how this has happened as Jeremy (The God) Irish takes particular care in not letting our Email addresses become public domain. Anyway, this Email promises $245 per recipient if you forward it because IBM and Microsoft will monitor your forwarded messages. If you get this mail do not bother as it is total crap and its only purpose is to create Internet traffic. Do yourself and everybody else a favour and delete it. Replying to the sender is not a good idea as the senders address is probably spoofed (fake) as well. I hate junk mail!!
