  1. Sorry to spoil the fun but I beleive it is an Amecrian Indian God called Kokopelli. Here is and extract from a URL: In ancient Indian legend, Kokopelli the flute player was the symbol of happiness and joy. He talked to the wind and the sky. His flute could be heard in the Spring breeze, bringing warmth after the winter cold. Kokopelli embodies everything pure and spiritual about music. He was also thought of as a fertility god and traveling prankster. He would visit villages playing his flute, carrying his songs on his back. Everyone would sing and dance the night away. In the morning, when he left, the crops were plentiful and all the women were pregnant. There are many stories of Kokopelli. One is that he is responsible for the end of winter and the coming of spring. Native American legend has it that when the Kokopelli comes playing his flute the Sun comes out, the snow melts, the green grass grows, the birds come out and begin to sing, and all the animals gather around to hear his songs. Kokopelli and his flute bring the Spring out of the Winter. So to summarise its a bloke who plays with his flute a lot ;-) Cheers Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 2. I also dropped my Etrex Summit while geocaching in Munich. I was gutted when I saw I had cracked the LCD. On my return to the UK I contacted Garmin saying I had dropped it and the LCD was broken and they replaced it under Warranty with no quibbles at all. Very impressive (Or perhaps the Summits have a weak LCD?) Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 3. Finally we have stopped moving backwards. Let's see if we can get the car in first and get the clutch up. First Task- Get some admins on board. It sounds like we have a volunteer for the South of England. We need a volunteers for the North of the Island (Worded Carefully here). Second Task- When the dust has settled and the poo has stopped flying look again at what started all of this. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  4. If we have any admins left can we get this idiot off the boards please. LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  5. I appeciate that the term Northerners (As far as us soft bellied prawn cocktail eating Southerners are concerned) applies to anthing above the Watford Gap Services on the M1. But perhaps we should phrase a cache bash in Scotland as the Extreme Nothern where they eat haggis cache bash in future ;-). I respect the proud heritage of the extreme North of our Island and also appreciate that you Scots do not like to be too closely associated with the Wine/Lager quaffing Southerners (or Newcastle Ale quaffing slightly Southerners). Lets face it we are all on the same Island. It's just a bit more scenic (and cold) where you are. 6. quote:All I would like to see is that the effete, namby-pamby southern toff clique down there who feel the need to get involved in all this (necessary, and I do appreciate it) work are aware that different conditions apply up here and bear us in mind. I hope that statement was meant in jest Pooter. If not I will have to be equally isulting about the Scots. The only fear I would have then is a bunch of Claymore wielding woad painted kilt wearing loonies chasing me down Yep you are probably right about there being a different set of rules for Scotland. Land Access rights are a lot different with Scotland but I am sure if the EGA (English Geocaching Association- I appreciate your comments about the Assocaition name) works out then some bonnie wee geocacher in Scotland can take up the mantle. One last thing- If you Scottish Geocachers are objecting to the 'United Kingdom' in the Association name then why are you posting on the United Kingdom Forum . 7. Hi. I am from the UK and have created a Word Document regarding some of the finer points of Geocaching. You can get it from a link of the from page of my (Non-Commercial) Website: Lassitudes Retreat Hope it helps Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 8. Thanks to all you x-Admins! I do not blame you for your actions one bit. There is only so much BS a hard-working admin can take. I wondered when people were going to start archiving their caches in protest. I seem to remeber that being used as a weapon in previous disputes. Forums are not good places to sort out problems like this. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 9. In your position I would do the same. Lets see what happens as local authorities learn about Geocaching and start prohibiting it from their land. And let us all sit back and reflect on how easy it is to destroy so much hard work with a few posts on a forum. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  10. Well I have done over 200 caches and the only time I met another team was when T&J 'ambushed' me at one of theirs. I had spoken to Tim on the phone that day and said I was off to this particular cache next and he decided to set a trap. The only problem was I cocked up the final cache location and took ages to find it so he (and June) had to sit around for quite a long time . I saw the car of the aforementioned infamous cacher whilst doing a cache near Ascot. All I remember was his Mercs numberplate was GPS somthing. In my opinion both of these incidents do not count as a chance meeting so I can honestly say that I am pretty sure I have done the most (Over 200) caches without being seen. Furtive or what? I am not counting caches at meetings. For goodness sakes you are bound to meet somebody on those! Cheers Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  11. I can compile all the photos on to one screensaver. This is likely to take 300MB or more though. I thought it should be kept a bit smaller. Perhaps I will release a 'Hidden Treasures' Gold Edition with all the pics from the current releases of Hidden Treasures. For those Geocachers in Scotland and Wales I would really appreciate photos from you as you have (arguably) some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Cheers Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  12. As some of you already have the previous incarnations of my geocaching screensaver you will know what this is about. For those of you who do not: Periodicaly I compile a set of digital images from my photographs taken while Geocaching. These photos give an impression of the area of a Geocache and do not give away the location of the cache. If any of you have photos taken while Geocaching that you are happy for me to include on the next release of the screensaver please Email them to me at the following address: chris@franklin.fsbusiness.co.uk. Please ensure: --The photos are of scenery only. --The photos are of the highest resolution possible (Do not reduce them) --The files you send me are named: <Geocaching.com waypoint> <cache name> by <your Geocahing team name>. This saves me a great deal of time. --The photos do not give away the exact cache location. --The photos are of Cache locations in the UK and Eire. I will make the screenaver available on my website (The last version was 100MB) and will post a CDROM to any team who submits a photo and provides a postal address. I will also place CDROMS in caches as swaps. I do not ask for any money for this. It is all for the love of it and will cost me money in postage and CDROM media which I am willing to foot. When I have about 50+ decent pictures I will compile the new release. I currently have about 20 pics. Previous releases are available for download at WWW.lassitude.co.uk (Non-Profit making Website) Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. 13. I think I am convinced that the IPAQ is the way to go. I am fed up with waiting for Garmin to prvode Topo maps for the eMap so I will probably be selling the eMap when I get round to buying the IPAQ/EMTAC solutiuon. I suppose I had better start saving up.... I wonder if HP will rename the IPAQ to IKARD? Thanks to all for the assistance. 14. I have been looking at getting a PDA as my next big waste of money. My old Handspring Visor is looking really dated now and really has little use when Geocaching. I have some questions for those of you who have used high end PDA's for Geocaching: It seems the iPaq is the most popular PDA in Geocaching. I have lots of Sony kit so I have Sony Memory sticks and don't want to have to a whole bunch of new media. However if I was to buy a Sony CLie PDA I would want the following options: A ruggedised water resistant cover Some good O/S mapping software. I am not sure if Tom-Tom/MemoryMap and GPXview are available on PalmOS but I would want the same functionality of these aps on a Clie. Last but not least I would like a Bluetooth GPSr that has the track functionality (i.e. Leaves a breadcrumb trail that you can save). I believe the EMTAC does not do this. If anybody has experince with a Sony Clie or PalmOS based PDAs using the above could you offer some advice? 15. There is one exception to clues that are total spoilers. If a cache is rated at the more challenging end of the difficulty scale then the clue should not give the cache location away. This prevents people getting easy scores on the more difficult ones. I know this is a pain if you are not local to the area and have made a special visit to the said cache but lets face it if they were all easy where is the challenge? Perhaps the more challenging caches should have some sort of warning: 'This ain't going to be easy and tyhe clue won't help a great deal' I did a cache in Camberley this week where the team who placed who placed it must be on another planet ;-) and although I manged to get the gist of a very small part of his cache description when I decoded the clue I had no idea what it meant and it was no use to me at all. Anyway I found it by being methodical and very lucky. That was a very enjoyable find. 16. Put a vote and a review on there. Don't know what Geocaching.com will get out of it but if they want our support I am happy to give it. 17. Based on some of the other rulings by moderators in the UK I would think this set of TBs although is inventive and amusing to most adults it is inappropriate content for children. It could probably be explained away by parents but that is not the point. The problem is if this is allowed then do the boundaries of acceptibilty move with it? 18. Thanks for the help. I have Installed Watcher on my Laptop and am looking forward to a week on the Norfolk Broads and hopefully a couple of cache visits while we are there. Really wuite impressed with Watcher. I have also installed MobiPockets PC Ebook Reader as a backup. Thanks for the help. 19. I am wondering if anybody knows of a way to getting cache descriptions softcopy that I can read on my Laptop? Geocachings palm query gives you the description in PRC format which is only useable (as far as I know) on a Palm device. Has anybody else found a way of getting the data in a flat text format? (Without Cutting and Pasting!!!) Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  20. - I will put this one in my diary. I want to hit some caches in this area so I will make a day of it. I'll pop in for an hour or two and then hit the road to do some more caches. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  21. I do not beleive you could have missed me off of the list Moss!!! Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  22. quote:I have seen many adders killed on paths when walking by the misguided and fearful, no snake is intentionally going to harm you, but if you are bitten when you try to handle it or provoke, it it your fault not the snakes. Yep I know a few misguided poeple whos immediate reaction to seeing a snake is to try an kill it. Adders will try to get out of your way when they hear/feel you coming. On colder days they may prefer to stay under cover as because they are cold blooded they are a lot less mobile if they are not warm. If a cache is placed deep in the undergrowth (i.e. Not near a path) then this has got to increase the risks in an area where Adders are very common. Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  23. I visited a cache today near Newbury and was greeted with signs warning of Ground Nesting Birds and increased Adder activity. When I got to the cache location I saw two (or more) Adders within 10 feet of the cache. They were obviously more scared of me than I was of them (Just) but this incident has led to me posting a note (I have informed the cache placer as well). If you have placed a cache in an area which may have wildlife about they are all thinking about reproducing right now. Female Adders will become protective, nesting birds can be easily disturbed. Areas such as this (Nature reserves) will often have warnings asking people who use the reserve to stick to the paths and be sensitive to the needs of our furry / feathered / scaled friends. If your cache is in a reserve then you should think carefully about where you placed the cache. If there is a danger of Geocachers disturbing things then the cache should be moved or archived. I know this sounds a bit overbearing but you try standing in the middle of a leafy area with Adders all over the place. That is one experience I will not forget in a hurry. Also please do not use plastic bags to wrap your cache containers in. These will not last long as rodents will nibble them. There is also a chance that the same creatures will become poisioned or entangled in these bags (Not to mention Adders hiding in them!). Thanks Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  24. Must say what I was really looking for was Topographical information for my eMap so I could see countours and land features other than roads on the display. Garmin were supposed to be in negociation with Ordnamce Survey last year to get the information to produce a Topograpical map set for the UK. Not sure where they are now but they mumbled somehting about the tail end of 2003 for a product such as this. I would not bet on it as I am not sure the processors in Garmin GPS units could ahndle that sort of detailed data. My eMAp is slow displaying roadmaps. Cheers Chris LASSITUDE- (noun) Tiredness and apathy: a state of weariness accompanied by listlessness or apathy[15th century. Via French from Latin lassitudo , from lassus 'weary'.]
  25. I found the cache in question tonight. It was in a tupperware container. I think if there were a number of spent balnk cartridge cases in an Amoo box cache it would be another matter. However these spent blank shell cases can be found all over the woodland areas surrounding Aldershot (Where the army practices). I would surmise that it is not a paricularly inspiring thing to find in a cache and to the uneducated could be a bit of a concern but as far as I am concerned I do not see a real problem. I don't thik this short of thing shot be encouraged as cache contents though.
