  1. I really do appreciate all the offers! I think we are going to order 8 of them and put them together and send them out. As soon as we get them all together, I'll start contacting people from this thread and try to spread them out all over! Thanks again!!!
  2. That is what I figured. I told him that something like EasyGPS or GSAK would probably take the place of the Garmin software and would probably be better. You know what they say about free software...you get what you paid for!
  3. I was talking with a friend over the weekend and he told me he had purchased a 60 CS out of the newspaper. The unit is in great shape and came with the box and everything. I guess he didn't know what all to look for, but the waypoint manager software wasn't in there. Is the software worth having? Are there any 2nd party softwares that will do the same thing? I haven't seen the software yet and I haven't gotten my new 70 Cx yet so I can't give him an opinion yet. I looked on the Garmin web site and it shows that you can send tracks from the software to the GPS. I don't know of any other software that will transfer the tracks from a map like it shows on the web site. If he needs it, is there a way to download it? It looks like you can purchase the software from Garmin, but of course if he can get it for free like when it came with the unit then that would be happier.
  4. I am in DIRE need of a copy of CD # 1 of the 6 MapCreate Topo 6.3 software. I need to reinstall the software onto my comptuer after a problem with the hard drive and I cannot locate the 1st CD. I have the other 5, but not the 1st one which is probably the most necessary. Is there someone who can provide this for me? Does anyone have any ideas on what else I can do in order to get this CD so I can reload the software back onto my hard drive? Please don't tell me that I will have to purchase an entire new set of CD's!!!
  5. You are right Eartha! That title might be misleading. Thanks for changing that! As soon as we get the ball going on this I'll be sure to let some of you guys know and get them out to people! Thanks!!!!
  6. I am a partner in another web site that deals with hunting and fishing. We have a couple of members who do GCing, but not very many. Since most of us are waterfowl hunters, we were going to try to get a couple of travel bugs out into the different flyways and see how far they go and to what flyways (alot like they do with bands on ducks and geese). Would it be taboo to ask others here on the GCing forum to put out tb's for us? We would purchase the dog tags and fix up the tb, all we would do would be to mail the tb to those who want to help and ask them to "release" them into their area. I wanted to check to make sure this wasn't against the rules or unethical before we got to work on it. Thanks!
  7. InvisiShield and ShieldZone are the same product.
  8. I thought the 76 came with a serial and I have a serial to USB connector, but now that I go back and look at the Garmin site I see that you are correct and it does have the USB cable. I guess the only way to tell is to wait until I receive the unit or unless someone else on here has experienced this ordeal. With seeing all of these other companies changing softwares and all this, I'm glad to know that Garmin still uses the Topo software that I bought a couple of years ago. Some people might frown on not updating the roads more often, but that is fine by me! Just a brief version download and it should be good to go for when the new unit gets here!
  9. So I have sold my Lowrance unit and have ordered a Garmin 76 Cx with the nice rebate. I have the Mapsource TopoUS from previously using my Legend and have been informed that if I want auto-routing then I would need the CityNavigator software. Here is my question...I currently have Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006. Will this get me the auto-routing feature by plugging my 76 into my laptop? S&T says it does auto-routing so I don't see why it wouldn't as long as S&T will recognize the 76. I just don't want to have to spend the extra money on more software if I already have software that will do the job. I won't use this feature all that often so it won't be like an everyday deal.
  10. I am so glad to hear that Mapsource Topo is the same. Now that I think about it, I think it was Magellan that changed their Topo software. I can't exactly remember. I'll start looking into the CityNavigator. I put my order in for my 76 Cx and it should be on its way tomorrow!!!!
  11. The unit is sold pending payment! Thanks for the interest!
  12. I think I'm going to sell my Lowrance iFinder Hunt Plus unit. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this unit. It works awesome, I'm just wanting to try a new unit. I have only used the unit for a couple of months. Unit comes with: -cigarette lighter cable -MapCreate 6.3 Topo software -LEI USB card reader -64 mb SD card (card that came with the unit) -512 mb SanDisk SD card (card that was purchased after) -InvisibleShield screen protector -Owners manual This Hunt unit is perfect for hunting or any traveling. It allows you to save hunting icons on roosts, scrapes, rubs, bedding areas or other areas to aid in scouting. This is not only for hunting as it is a feature loaded unit. For more information on the unit, you can view the info from Lowrance's web site at this link http://www.lowrance.com/Outdoor/Products/ifinderhunt.asp Here is a pic of this unit. The owners manual and the 64 mb SD card are not included in the picture, but are included with the unit. I purchased the Hunt Plus unit for $350 and the 512 mb card was another $35. I'm asking $325 for the unit plus shipping and insurance. Note that other GPS units are comparable in price, but you then must purchase the mapping software which will cost around another $90. This Plus unit comes with the Topo software! With the software, I broke 1 of the 6 CD's, but I was able to get a copy of that CD from a buddy that has the same unit. All of the CD's work fine, but I did want to make you aware that one of the CD's was a copy. The other 5 CD's are originals. You can PM me or email me at matt@hunterscentral.com
  13. I'm thinking about picking up a 76 Cx with this rebate. What is the topo software that Garmin uses now? I have MapSource Topo and Roads & Rec from my Legend, but if I remember correctly they use a different version now.
  14. I got mine a couple of weeks ago, but haven't put any out yet. As soon as I get some free time I'm going to work up a cache!
  15. I think I have the same thing....did it come with 8 AA and 4 AAA batteries? I of course charged all of my batteries when I got them and then put them in a baggie in a drawer. I pulled out 2 of the AA the other day and put them in the GPS and it didn't stay on very long at all. I then recharged the batteries until the light went off on the charger and then put another 2 in the GPSr. I turned it on again and it didn't even show fully charged. It showed about 95% this time. I have been quite disappointed with these batteries in the short time that I have used them. I really don't want to have to go buy another charger.
  16. My suggestion would be to become a Premium Member so you can get the Pocket Queries to load into GSAK and it would be much quicker and easier. I use Cachemate and GPXSonar both. They both do the same thing and as far as functionality I'd have to rate them the same as well. The only difference is that GPXSonar is free and Cachemate is $8. If someone could put together some info on how to work Cachemate without having to search the internet or their forums then it might be a little better. But from what I've seen GPXSonar will do the same thing for free.
  17. I started using Cachemate PPC and I want to use it to the fullest of its possibility, but can't find exact directions on everything it can do. Is there any way you can write a log in Cachemate and then load it from the PPC to GSAK or something else and have it automatically log your visit on Geocaching.com. Say for example, you visit caches X, Y, and Z and then go into Cachemate and type in your logs for the caches. Once you get home, connect your PPC to your computer and then sync it with GSAK and it will automatically log your find on Geocaching.com. Is this possible or am I just dreaming? I typically only visit 3 or 4 caches at most a day so I really have no need to type in a log for each cache for notes so I can log my find when I get back home. If you can't do this with the log in Cachemate then I personally don't have that much use for the log function.
  18. I have the Jornada 540 as well and used to use it for Geocaching, but now use my Cingular 8125. The only thing you can do for the 540 is to export the file out of GSAK in HTML and then open that file on the Jornada in the File Explorer. Of course you need to start with the PocketQueries you get from being a Premium Member so that you can open them all in GSAK.
  19. When I'm out using my GPS, I typically know the areas where I am. I use the GPSr to mark waypoints and the such. I also use it to follow trails. It always helps me get back to the vehicle, but I don't rely solely on the GPS. I've never learned how to use maps or compass so I always take mental notes of landmarks and lays of the land.
  20. Don't assume the sheriff was the one who entered the coords. I bet he got his 8 year old to do it for him!
  21. I'm glad to see that is all it was and not an example of someone relying on the GPS as a crutch and then realizing they didn't know how to use it. At least everyone is safe and sound now and they DO know how to use a GPS!
  22. I have found that the Lowrance units give you more bang for your buck and I prefer the antenna in my unit over ANY other unit I have owned. My iFinder Hunt has never let me down and has never given me any strange readings. I have gotten position fixes in my truck which was in the garage and even inside the house in a room with no windows. With other "Gargellan" units I have owned I could be sitting in a chair next to the window and still not get a fix. The only downfalls I have found with my Hunt is that I can't figure out how to find or use the tripometer. The other thing is that the tracks and waypoints don't save the time so figuring speed or location isn't possible, but that isn't that big of a deal for me. If I were to buy another unit today, the first thing I would look at would be another Lowrance unit!
  23. I run the iFinder Hunt and keep it in a zippered pouch on my 4-wheeler when riding. I have not lost a signal even when riding through heavy cover on in heavily wooded ditches. I have gotten position locks while in my truck which was parked in the garage. I have only tried this twice and it locked both times. I even got a lock when I turned my GPS on when I was sitting in the bathroom (its better not to ask questions!)! No windows in the bathroom. The east wall is an outside wall, but everything else is bordered by the rest of the house. I have even thought about tapping into the GPS antenna for the OnStar unit in my truck, but have absolutely no need to.
