  1. Yes, that seemed to do the trick. She signed in with FB login, changed name in settings, updated password and logged out. New account created under new name with logs saved. Thanks!
  2. Have introduced friend to geocaching and she is picking it up very quickly. She downloaded app on phone, and logged in using Facebook. So her FB profile name shows as Geo User. She wants to sign up her own Geocache account, but not lose the finds/logs she already has. Is there a way to create "new" account from FB login, or disconnect the one profile from the new one? Thanks, UncaBee
  3. Oh I absolutely agree, and am always prepared to explain, show the cache container (if I've found it), show off the GPSr and how it works. I've talked to many people about it when questioned and have had several interested audiences. The problem I perceive coming for us as a group is that the bomb-scare and perv-park issues are a small percentage yet highly publicized. And the more often it happens, will reinforce the negative attitude rather than educate about the sport. It will make it very difficult to carry on our innocent activity in the wake of more and more people looking at *everyone* as a suspicious lurker. That's what we need to try to prevent. UncaBee
  4. Wasn't there something like this on The Amazing Race once? Only the final was a combination lock, not a keyed type. (That way you don't have to keep replacing them.) They had to collect the numbers from the hint caches and then figure out what order they go to unlock the lock. The only issue might be a non-cacher stumbling across a padlocked ammo box and not understanding and calling the authorities. There have been a lot of instances of the bomb-squads taking a serious run at unidentified and misunderstood cache boxes in the news lately. UncaBee
  5. Ah Ha! I finally found a topic where this fits. Tonight on the local news, there was a report on Pervert's Park, which apparently an amature investigator shot a ten minute video and posted it on You Tube. News feature: http://www.cbs6albany.com/video/?bcpid=113...ctid=1731287434 This is a high profile public park in the 12304 zip code and there are about half a dozen caches in there now. The report claims that men are seeking out hidden places in the woods for "deviant" activities. Now the local police have opened a full-fledged investigation. I know that I have felt weird, and many times gotten "the look" from passers-by when coming out of a wooded area from caching alone. Now, as a group, we have one more thing to worry about when being approached by the authorities or citizens. As an older man, I know it's difficult not to be conspicuous hanging around parks and areas where children gather when you don't have one with you. I think the police would continue to be understanding as long as you have your GPSr in your hand. Although, my concern would be vigilante "bashers" who are just out looking for trouble and can't tell a cacher from a deviant and don't want to take the time to listen to your explanation. Could be serious danger/harm involved. Or would it be worse to find a couple of deviants unknowingly having their way right at the coords of the cache... UncaBee
  6. One time we found a cache in an area that was about to go under construction, like only a day or two away from being dug up and destroyed. We immediately notified the cache owner who did not live in the immediate area and requested permission to move the cache out of harms way. The owner was quite agreeable. We found another location about 100 feet away that was very similar to the description of the orig site (base of hollow tree type). We sent new coords, photos close up and of the general area. The owner updated the cache page and the next time she came to the area she checked on it and all was well and she really appreciated the heads up. The key point being that we notified the owner BEFORE moving anything and worked together to relocate the cache. I think there is a sidewalk now where the cache used to be. UncaBee
  7. Thanks for a good reminder on guardrails. I started caching in late fall and haven't had a bee encounter yet. (Deer Ticks, that's another thread...) There are a lot of guardrail caches around here. I used to work as an electrician at a lumber mill and one thing I learned there was that you NEVER opened an outdoor electrical enclosure with your face right in front of it. Not only because of the electrical danger, but because bees and wasps love to make homes in these warm & dry spaces. A rainproof enclosure protects from falling water but there are usually small holes in the bottom and a bee can get into an opening much smaller than you think. You opened the box with one hand and held on to your Raid can with the other. I am always wary of any kind of enclosure now because you never know what's in there. And the Paper Wasps up here in the Northeast like to build into hidden corners of wood and metal structures. Sunglasses or safety glasses could be a good idea when probing because wasps will go for your eyes. I was afraid of bees as a kid but as I have gotten older I have learned to live with them, as long as we stay on our own territory. If they cross the line and start nesting on my porch, it's war... 8. Hi, I hope this isn't off-track. I was thinking of a sub-catagory or something like what you are talking about here of fire houses that still have the old alarm ring mounted out front. I'm not sure if it's called an alarm ring, but those big (4 or 5 feet) iron rings that hung out in front of fire houses in small communities and they would run out and bang on it with a hammer to signal the alarm. I think there is still one in front of the Fuller Road Fire House in Colonie, NY, http://www.fullerroadfire.com/Main/FRFDhome1024.htm near where I live (go to site and click on History link to see a pic), and I was in South Portland, Maine over the weekend and I saw one up in that region. You don't see them much anymore and rarely in cities. I am not particularlly interested in managing this type of catagory, but it sounds like Rescue557 may be someone with some interest in it. Just a thought. Thanks, UncaBee Albany, NY
  9. I like mystery novels and bought some at my library's fund raising book sale. They sell off some of the older books that are not moving. After I read them, I thought it would be a neat idea to leave them in caches, like a geo-library. I like to hunt cashes on vacation and if I found a book that piqued my interest, I would probably trade a book, read it and trade again. I think other adults would do this. I see some other people listed books in their posts. Mostly, I'm in it for the hunt and find, though. That's the fun. PS to Criminal: I'm sure if the porn industry could make money at it, they would have already come up with a geo-porn.com site.
