  1. The big thing I like about using the Nuvi loaded with the Nuvi GPX V2 macro, is that I get an audible warning 250 meters from a cache. Now that I have an Oregon 600, I also sometimes just use it in Nuvi mode. I like your idea of having a user shortcut button to do a quick switch; I need to look at doing that for mine.
  2. I use a Nuvi 2595LMT for navigating to the general area, then use my Oregon 600 to find the cache. I use a GSAK macro (Nuvi GPX V2) to convert the cache and parking coordinates to POIs and load them on an external microSD card.
  3. The InReach products seem to be the main draw for the acquisition.
  4. I start caching in 2011 and am on GPS number 3. eTrex 20 (bought in 2011, still have it) GPSMAP 62s (bought in 2013, sold it last month) Oregon 600 (bought in 2015 for $250 CDN)
  5. Around here, we have an ammo can thief, so folks have stopped hiding the real ammo cans and now opt for the plastic Plano ammo boxes if they are going to hide one, but even those get stolen. I only have one ammo can hide; a long multi/night cache and it's tethered to the tree with aviation cable. It's only had 55 finds in just under 2 years and a with 18 favorite points. Lock and locks or soda bottle preforms (great for paddle caches) are my preferred containers for placing caches.
  6. What web browser and version of Windows are you using? Most modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge) have stopped supporting the plugin architecture (NPAPI) that the Magellan (and Garmin) communicator plug-ins use. Manually copying the GPX files to your device is your best option now.
  7. Is it legal? Sure it is. The ones I've found either require you to lower something like a hiking pole down the inside of pole to connect with the magnet on top of the container, or use a magnet on the side of the pole (if PVC or similar) to raise it up.
  8. I updated my Oregon 600 four days ago. I encountered no problems with the update and I noticed no changes or improvements to the Oregon's os. I updated my Oregon 600 the other day. While out caching yesterday, the GPS locked up on me several times, requiring a battery pull to get it working again. Each time it locked up, I was simply hitting the back arrow on the bottom left of the screen where you can pick description, hint, log, etc.
  9. Around the area I cache in, we refer to that as a shared FTF.
  10. I've had freeze ups using GGZ files. Most times when I have had an issue with my 600, it's been while viewing a cache description. Other times it's been when entering the next set of coordinates when doing a multi. I'm still running firmware 4.60. I also had similar issues when viewing cache descriptions on my former GPSMAP 62s, so it's likely a common issue in shared firmware code.
  11. There is an Android app called GDAK. For the OP: mapnik is a form of OSM (OpenStreetMap). Go to the link on4bam posted (OpenStreetmap for Garmin) and select the map for the UK. Another option that is UK based is Talkytoaster
  12. I have a cache that requires the use of UV lights. As a helping gesture, I placed small UV lights in the each of the caches...cachers took the lights. If you are going to provide tools, go cheap or find a way to secure them so they don't grow legs and walk off.
  13. Oddly enough, it's not mentioned on the product pages. What are GGZ files?
  14. You don't know The Rat or you wouldn't have written that. If there is anybody who is NOT in it for the numbers, it's The Rat. I think the next Cliff Knowles victim has been located
  15. Glad I'm not the only one. Haven't had a problem since getting glasses a few weeks ago. Best one for me was getting a cache in the low crotch of a tree, standing up and then walking right into a large branch. Almost knocked myself out...had a headache for a few days after that one.
  16. How many caches are you loading at a time? I suspect what you are seeing is the result of a GPX indexing failure. The GPX file IS on your GPS, but the device is having issues indexing the GPX file or files that are on the device. I found with my eTrex 20 that once I put more 1200 caches on the device, the chances of an indexing failure increased. For that reason, I put the caches on a microSD card, so it can be removed in the field to resolve the problem.
  17. Very true. When I was actively using the eTrex 20 for caching, I found that if I loaded more than 1500 caches on the microSD card, the chances of an indexing failure increased substantially.
  18. Since you're a premium member, using pocket queries is a more efficient way to get caches on to your GPS. Since the plugin no longer works correctly, simply click "GPX file" and then manually copy the GPX file to the GPS (that's all the plugin did anyway). The OP indicated they were interested in the eTrex 20x, which is the updated version of the eTrex 20 and has not been discontinued.
  19. It's not working for me at the moment with IE11 or Chrome on Windows 7 Enterprise.
  20. When I take a TB, I keep it for several weeks. I have GSAK and CacheSense configured to have the TB visit each cache I have found. Say I pick up a TB locally, take it on several caching trips and travel 600 kilometers in total. Because none of the caches I found during those runs were big enough to drop the TB, I end up dropping it near where I live. Without those visit logs, it might only show it traveled 10 kms, when in reality it traveled 600 kms. Kind of defeats the "travel" portion of a Travel Bug.
  21. While walking on a winding trail, looking through the dense undergrowth to the side: It's only 100 feet through that...or a half mile by trail. Decisions, decisions... Something I usually say before doing it: "Straightlining it to the cache is not always the best option". Then I go straight for the cache, and discover I should have taken the longer route.
  22. I started with an eTrex 20 (still have it and use it on occasion), then moved to a GPSMAP 62s, and now use an Oregon 600. I intend to sell the GPSMAP 62s once I get my wife an Oregon or maybe an eTrex Touch 35.
  23. Even mature Garmin products have that issue. My GSPMAP 62s and Oregon 600 lock up under certain scenarios and require a battery pull to resolve them. I think when Garmin did product wide firmware updates recently, they introduced some new bugs while addressing others.
  24. After finding a cache, I go on my Etrex - menu - log attempt - found - find next closest. The issue I have above is when I go menu - log attempt - did not find - find next closest - etc. On the Etrex interactive map the caches I've logged as "did not find" appear as open chests rather than a traditional (for example) icon. Sorry, I meant how are you logging your finds from your GPS to the Geocaching.com web site? GSAK, field notes, etc.
