  1. Hello and welcome Will very much depend on your budget really. All the models will do the job well - the bits inside are much the same - but if you buy more expensive ones you will get things like mapping, colour screens and other extras. I also started with a GPS60 - perfectly good unit, but others such as the Etrex yellow or the Geko perform exactly the same. One advantage the GPS60 will have over some others is that it's USB - so if you plan to download directly from your computer to the unit (rather than inputting manually) then you don't have to buy a seperate cable.
  2. The golden ammo can was an idea that came from and was funded by the WSM committee. It was intended to be a symbolic item handed from UK Mega to UK Mega. It was never intended for anything other than Mega Events. I personally feel taking it to other events belittles the special value of the can and what it represents and think it's a real shame if it gets taken all over the shop like a regular TB - it will loose something of it's unique quality. When we as as a committee designed and made it, we were well aware that we would loose control of it's purpose once we handed it on, but I thought that I would reiterate the original intent of the can so that others know what it was designed to be used for. I for one will only look at it at Megas.
  3. Hi there, Of the hybrids I've found, only one from memory had a unique stamp - the others were very generic of the sorts that you could pick up in any high st, so it doesn't really matter what you choose. I think unique or unusual is nicer, but by no means essential. As for the log books, from memory I think I have only ever seen one in hybrids - but again I don't think it matters and if you prefer the idea of two then there's no reason why not. I have also seen stamps attached to the log book to prevent them becoming accidentally taken as trade items - might be a good idea if you want to prevent it going missing...
  4. A royal coin would be like marmite - people will either love them or hate them. And Dorset Gal is right - it would be easy for something like this to look incrediby tacky. Personally it's not for me - like many others I will be doing my best to avoid an media coverage of this which is bound to be excessive. I wish them well like I would any young couple, but I don't want it all rammed down my throat for the next 6 months. Anyone up for an event on a remote island somewhere on the day of the wedding??
  5. As Birdie suggested it on an other thread (and I thought it was a nice idea) I'll get the ball rolling..... Long walks Great views Nice big fat ammo cans stuffed full of lovely swaps, bugs and coins The smug feeling you get when you find a cache that everyone else has DNF'd for months All the great friends I've made across the UK since I started caching Camping events Peach jars GSAK
  6. I've never had powerlines making any sort of difference to my GPS signal. What sort of unit are you using ??
  7. Do you mean like the Colonel H. George Cachington coins? They were appearing for a while - nobody knew who he was except coins were being left in random places for cachers to find......
  8. Having your caching trip interrupted cause you've got to take your other half to A&E
  9. Look out for Weston Wanderer caches - some lovely original cache containers. My all time favourite cache is in the Norfolk Broads - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=8c7e0a15-e943-42d4-9af8-00b6a391b056 - takes a bit of planning so maybe not one for a short trip, but if you have a sense of adventure you'll love it and certainly wont forget getting there!
  10. I know it's common sense, but please only ring the police if it's appropriate to do so. We don't want to be bothered with phone calls if it's just someone going for a walk in the woods etc..... If your doing something that might cause a 3rd party concern for your welfare, then it might make more sense to have a by stander on hand to explain what's going on or simply not bother!
  11. Stu that is the BEST time to go night caching!! I will be dragging you and Dawn out at the next event now, whether you like it or not - LOL!
  12. If you see a little black mini tailgating you round Swansea don't worry - it's just me trying to get your signal LOL!
  13. You've been bookmarked! Will hopefully go and find it later today
  14. I might bump into you at Pilton then Madyokel
  15. When I started caching the first few micros I found had swaps in - tiny beads, shells or little badges. Not the case anymore, but the idea of a cache being a collection of treasures held true at the start regardless of size.
  16. Yes - it's already being discussed here in this forum thread.
  17. I have just made my list (of one) public, so if anyone wants to add to it let me know. I'm aware of at least 4 that are in the planning so I'm sure it'll grow quite quickly.... If anyone knows of any more then just PM me through my profile.
  18. You have mail...... Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com UK Geocaching Information & Resources website www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk Geocaching.com Knowledge Books Woohooo!!!!!! Wonder who'll be first to find it though??
  19. Been out and hidden mine this afternoon. Hopefully it will be published soon
  20. Are any of the lackeys or mods able to answer this?? Lots of cachers have asked the same question on feedback with no reply. Yes or no either way, but the silence on the subject is very fustrating!
  21. Fab idea, and after some chats behind the scenes, I for one am really pleased that thekennelat79 had taken the plunge and got this up and running. For those of you who would prefer a physical amnesty drop off then I have recently hidden an amnesty cache for trackables. Still in the reviewer queue at the moment, but hope it will be published soon. Hopefully the two systems will complement each other and mean that we can get those TB’s and coins back out in the wild where they should be.
  22. Falling is fine - s'long as you remember to put a trampoline at the bottom!
  23. Without wanting to get drawn into an argument I have to say that I find the negativity towards the chirp disappointing. If you want to find a scuba cache you have to train to dive, get the necessary medicals etc and then buy/hire the kit to do it and pay for any licences. Same with climbing. Same with absailing. Same with boating. Same with kayaking. Same with caving. Same with Wherigo. You want to find a chirp and you don't have the kit you phone a friend and plan a pleasant joint caching trip with friends. Or you stick it on your iggy list. Yes it's commercial, but it's hardly as restrictive as any of the above. Enjoy it or don't, but complaining on here ain't gonna change the fact it exists!!
