  1. TerraServer doesn't have topo maps of all areas of the USA. Try another location.
  2. I transfer data between USAPhotoMaps and my Magellan Meridian at 115,200 baud with no problem.
  3. I'm sorry you had that problem. What I presumed everyone would do with new versions of USAPhotoMaps is un-zip it to the folder the current USAPhotoMaps is in (replace the old files with the new ones). Thus the map data files would still be in a folder below USAPhotoMaps.exe. Your question about copying the map data to a CD is answered in Advanced Help (towards the end of it because it's slightly difficult and can't be expected to be accomplished by everyone). Doug Cox
  4. There are two programs that do that: USAPhotoMaps (http://jdmcox.com/) and ExpertGPS (http://www.topografix.com/)
  5. USAPhotoMaps downloads topo and aerial photo maps from Terraserver, and can display routes on them, among other things. http://jdmcox.com/
  6. quote:I keep getting a X in the square boxs where the photos should go. Anyone know whats going on? The X's mean there are no available photos on the Terraserver website (or topos if you're trying to download them). USAPhotoMaps only downloads photos at 1 meter or 8 meter resolution, and topos at 4 meter resolution.
  7. The SR-71 is in an outdoor museum across the highway from Davis-Monthan AFB at N32.139347° W110.868108°. I used to fly the F-102 (those delta-wing airplanes are either F-102s or F-106s).
  8. USAPhotoMaps also downloads Terraserver aerial photos and topos, but doesn't have all the bells and whistles of ExpertGPS.
  9. Here's another source for Puerto Rico maps on a CD: http://www.metropr.com/
  10. quote:Do other maps have more detail, more accurate, more POIs, or yes - all of the above? Yes - more detail, more accurate, and more flexible in some cases. I have to put in a plug here for USAPhotoMaps now (http://jdmcox.com/).
  11. You DEFINITELY CANNOT transfer map data to a Magellan GPS from anything but MapSend. The purpose of third party map software is to display, edit, and transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks on a better map than the MapSend map.
  12. Why don't you use USAPhotoMaps (it's free) to check your GPS. Take it outside to an easily identifiable-from-the-air location and mark a waypoint. Then attach your GPS to your computer and download that waypoint to USAPhotoMaps and see if it's where you were when you marked the waypoint... http://jdmcox.com/
  13. UTM would be more precise. Here's the math (for latitude, which has constant parallels): There are 60 nautical miles / degree There are 60 minutes / degree So 1 nm = 1 minute of latitude or 6080 feet = 1 minute or 1853.184 meters = 1 minute (1 m = 0.3048ft) or 18.53184 meters = 0.01 minute UTM is precise to 1 meter without a decimal place. (I hope I didn't make a mistake)
  14. Is there any interest in a program that could transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks to/from a Meridian SD card? I'm thinking of adding that capability to USAPhotoMaps. It would be pretty easy, since the data on the card is in exactly the same format that's required for a serial transfer.
  15. Wait. USAPhotoMaps only downloads the active tracks (I thought the saved tracks were so abridged that they weren't worth keeping)...
  16. Well, it's possible you have a sub-version that wouldn't receive tracks. Get version 2.05. It works for me - and if it doesn't work for you, email me at jdmcox@jdmcox.com, and I'll see what I can do.
  17. I wrote USAPhotoMaps and I have a Garmin GPS 12Map and I just now downloaded some tracks with no problem... What version do you have?
  18. I just got mine from Amazon for $69.99, and it works fine.
  19. I got mine! Now I can make sure USAPhotoMaps works perfectly with the newer Magellans.
  20. Check out this web site: http://myweb.cableone.net/cdwissenbach/map.html
  21. I thought about doing this when I was hiking and was wondering how far away a mountain was. Walking perpendicularly to it, I could get it's compass bearing in two places, and knowing those places' UTM positions I could figure out how far away that mountain was (knowing two angles and the included side length). But I'm pretty lazy.
  22. To give a good evaluation of them in comparison with each other, a person would have to have bought both (they're expensive). But Joe Mehaffey and Jack Yeazel's GPS Information Website at http://joe.mehaffey.com/ might have a comparison somewhere on it, or at least more info on both.
  23. You could use USAPhotoMaps (at http://jdmcox.com/), which downloads aerial photos or topo maps from the Terraserver Web site, and also can show elevations and contour lines if you download elevation data from a Web site (see Advanced Help).
