  1. First time I have even a glimmer of a chance to go geocaching in two months, and I choose the day this bug appears. I have the same problem. I can see a mouseover/tooltip with the cache name, but can't click on the cache to get details.
  2. Wow, I hadn't thought of fishing line. I did read about the "floater" caches but don't think that's the case here. Well, I'm not giving up yet, at any rate. I'm reasonably certain one of them MUST be on the fence because the description says its accessible from the other side too. The other is at a locked gate. I even spent some time examining the lock and chain.
  3. LOL! These are in a park I pass almost every day, so I would feel them mocking me anyway.
  4. There are several local chain link fence caches that are driving me bonkers. They are NOT in the cap on the fence posts, nor in any kind of "sticker" magnet. Can't find any fake bolts or magnetic nano cylinders. Is there a secret to chain link fence caches that I don't know? Some of the log entries say things like "easy find," which does nothing for my self-esteem.
  5. Thanks for the tips. I removed all the exluded attributes except "Needs Maintenance" (I've found too many soaked mildewed logs to want to mess with those) and I think it's solved the problem. Things are showing up again that had been missing.
  6. I run a pocket query for geocaches centered on my home location, that I don't own and haven't found. I've excluded some attributes like Scuba Gear and >10 Km Hike, but nothing that should exclude basic around-town caches. For some reason, a number of caches are not being returned—caches that are in the middle of the search radius, sometimes right next to another cache that is included. Some of these are caches I've logged as DNFs, but not all of them, and other caches I've logged as DNFs are appearing in the PQ results. What could be the problem>
  7. Ok - as I anticipated then. In the meantime, try switching off Glonass if you have it on. I did see some sticky behavior when I tried Glonass enabled today. Maybe the calculated position is an average of Glonass and GPS position or something. After all, they have written "improved GPS response..." in the bugfixes, not GLONASS response. And indeed GLONASS is not enabled by default. Duh. Before I started, I had enabled WAAS but not GLONASS. I tried turning off WAAS and will see if it helps next time I go out. (And foolish me, when I saw the option I wondered, "Why WOULDN'T you want WAAS?")
  8. Well, I did read about the sticky issue, and watched a video of a sticky eTrex 30 alongside another Garmin unit, and it does seem to be just my luck that I have a sticky eTrex 10. I emailed Garmin support, though the forum threads didn't leave me optimistic about what kind of response I'll get. Other than the sticky issue, I think this unit will be adequate for me, if not ideal. Remember I'm coming from the Geomate Jr. so I'm used to "bare-bones" geocaching tech!
  9. I ran a 500-cache PQ that was 2.25MB, and it solved the problem. I can access all the descriptions and logs now. I'll experiment with adding more files to find the functional limit. The monochrome screen was actually one reason I chose this model, since I thought it would be easier to read in sunlight. The stock photos of the unit used in marketing seemed to show a basic trail map, so I made a bad assumption rather than researching the issue more thoroughly. The other reason I chose it was the price point, as my geocaching budget is tight (and rather hard-won from the family budget). Thanks for everyone's input!
  10. Thanks. I will read about the "sticky" issue. The file I loaded was 4.5MB. I didn't add the separate waypoint file, but who knows how much excess data was there. I'll try a smaller PQ. If the map really is this useless, I'll be disappointed, but it's not a big issue because my Geomate had no map, and I loved it anyway (until I couldn't update it anymore). I also found another thread that I think will help me with the UI issues I was having, which may help. Don't know when I'll get out again to try it, though, because of the holiday weekend. But, while there aren't many things I prefer to geocaching, Easter is one of them.
  11. Today I got a Garmin eTrex 10 to replace my Apisphere Geomate Jr. (which I was never able to update since the recent problems, and which has since become waterlogged and dead anyway). Just got back from a fruitless geocaching trip. I have some questions: I was able to load a 1000-cache PQ onto the unit, thanks to another thread in this forum. But I cannot figure out how to access data other than cache name, GC code, and location (and even switching between name and GC code is clumsy). How can I access the descriptions and logs? I get a low-memory warning. Do I just have too many caches loaded? Basemap: really? There doesn't seem to be a map at all other than a dotted line marking my trail. No roads, trails, or landmarks show up, although caches do. (Not very helpful without roads, etc.) I am not picky about wanting a fancy map, but this non-map is useless. Also, once I'm in the map, how to I exit back to the menu? Position updating: I may not be using it right, but there seems to be a problem with real-time updating of my position and distance to the cache. Sometimes I can wander 10 or 20 feet and nothing changes on the screen. This never happened with my Geomate (even when it had trouble getting an accurate signal). It is impossible to find ground zero when you have to guess whether the cache distance/direction on the screen is current. I really, really appreciate any tips or help that anybody can offer. Thanks!
  12. So the problem is not with my browser, but with the site itself. Thanks, that's actually helpful. I was planning to get another GPSr at some point anyway, guess I'll be pushing that up on the priority list.
  13. Yikes, forgot some details. I'm running IE7 on Windows Vista 32-bit. I tried downloading Firefox (I actually use Chrome, but it's not compatible with mygeomate.com). I got Firefox 11, the latest version, which is not compatible, apparently, with the software add-on. I guess the Firefox compatibility is only for old versions of Firefox. I suspect a problem with IE but can't figure out how to fix it (could not reinstall IE7 nor IE8).
  14. I am not able to update my Geomate from the update website. I read previous posts explaining how Apisphere was purchased and the Geomate is no longer supported. However, as the posts suggested, the website mygeomate.com is currently up and running. Not knowing about the problems with Apisphere, I bought a new update kit online (I had lost the old one) and tried to update my unit. The entire database on the Geomate was wiped, but the update had a "problem" so a new db was not uploaded. Now I have the problem that every time I try to access the website in Internet Explorer 7, one of the following happens: 1. Either I the software add-on is not detected (even though I manually enable it every time), or... 2. If the software add-on is detected, then I cannot use the menus to select my region and cache list type. The drop-down feature does not work. I saw that Pocket Queries are supported now, but I have a basic membership. Is there any hope for me without buying a PM and/or buying a new GPSr? Because currently my Geomate is much worse off than it was before I tried to update it. It's been wiped it's not even a very good paper weight because it is not very heavy. I am very sad I spent money on the update kit that killed my loyal Geomate.
  15. THANK you! That is exactly what I wanted. I couldn't find a link to site for mobiles, and "www.geocaching.mobi" just redirected to www.geocaching.com. Happy caching!
  16. I use the Geomate Jr. from Apisphere. I find that I really like its "minimalist" method: just turn it on and follow the arrow to the nearest geocache. I like being able to be impulsive about geocaching, and I like not knowing quite what to expect when I get there. Now, we all know that there are many geocaches that you really can't find without a hint or two. When can't find a cache that the Geomate pointed me to, I would really love to be able to access full cache info including description and hints. Trouble is, I can't get geocaching.com to work with my mobile. Is there a solution to this? Would this problem be solved by downloading Pocket Queries and putting them on my phone, and if so, how do I do this (besides upgrading my Basic Membership)? My mobile is a Samsung Touchscreen M800, and my carrier is PlatinumTel (USA). It's a prepaid "virtual network" using the Sprint network. The phone is GPS-capable but GPS is not supported by my carrier. It has a basic mobile-phone browser and I can access many other sites, but can't get beyond the landing page at geocaching.com. If you're not familiar with the Geomate, it's the least expensive GPS unit available and is dedicated to geocaching. As often as you feel like it, you download the most current list of basic traditional caches. When you turn on the unit, it selects the 20 nearest caches, and points you to them using nothing but distance and a directional arrow. The only additional data you have are the GC #, D/T, and size. There is no text whatsoever (unless you count the GC #).
  17. Is there a way for a person other than the cache owner to remove a "needs maintenance" log? I saw on the log that a cache I was planning to visit needed a new container, so I brought one with me and swapped it out. Problem solved, except that the cache (GC1HF2T) still has a "needs maintenance" attribute. Any way this can be removed easily, or is the only option to email the cache owner?
  18. Uh, I wasn't there, but a rotten egg is pretty unmistakable. So is a dead/discarded agg that is on the ground instead of in the nest. If there were a developing bird inside, the OP would have found said developing bird. The "microscopic" stage for an embryo is very brief: it becomes a perfectly formed miniature of a baby in a matter of days. (Same is true for all vertebrates including humans.) The yellow in the egg is the yolk (mainly fat and other nutrients to feed the developing chick), not mysterious "enzymes." The embryo makes its own enzymes just like any other organism. Lots of people are understandably concerned about the fate of baby birds because they are helpless (just like human babies) and become beautiful creatures, but it should be remembered that mortality among baby songbirds is very high. And not to sound like a cliché, but that's just nature.
  19. 1.) Archived caches do not show up on the geocaching maps. 2.) The caches that are pre-loaded into the Geomate Jr may have been archived between the time they were loaded into it and now. 3.) You can find archived caches by doing a search for: --the GC code, if you know it --the cache owner's name, if you know it --the username of someone who previously found the now-archived cache, if you know it If the that information does not help the OP, then I guess I didn't understand the problem(s) she's encountering and looking to resolve. Okay, I think the Geomate does have the GC code, the catch being that I have to get near the ghost-cache's coordinates for it to show up on the list. (For those not familiar with it, the Geomate picks the 20 caches nearest your location and lets you scroll through the list. The ONLY way to "search" for a cache is to get near enough for it to appear in the list.) So I think I'll be able to find out what I'm looking for, if I check the Geomate next time I'm in that part of town. For the record, one of my FOUR finds so far (yes, I said I'm a newbie :] ) was a newish P&G that wasn't in the Geomate at all—I found it just using the coordinates, which is possible but awkward with the Geomate. And to answer another user, no I don't have a smart phone. I don't even have much leisure time to go geocaching thanks to my wee children! OTOH it's an activity I can enjoy with the older ones.
  20. No, actually people are understanding me right. I already figured out how to work around the problem with the out-of-date Geomate until I get an update kit—look up caches online first and make sure they're still there and have recent finds. I'm just chagrined at how much time I spent looking for some that were in the Geomate but are not listed on this site, and wanted to make that time seem at least a little worthwhile by finding out the histories of those caches. (If you can't find the cache, at least find its story!)
  21. For Mother's Day, I got a Geomate Jr. without the update kit. I'm definitely going to have to remedy that, especially after a couple of fruitless searches for caches that aren't listed anywhere on Geocaching.com. It's apparent that without the update kit, I can't just turn it on and go on a hunt without pre-planning online before I leave home. In the meantime, I'm wondering if there is a way to look up archived caches and try to figure out WHY they are in the Geomate but don't show up on the map or in search results. Thanks!
