  1. We have a new garmin gps 62s unit. Used it once, and after figuring out how to load caches with gsak onto it, we were fine. However, we are very nearly to the point of returning it the REI because we cannot figure the blasted thing out. When I download caches into the unit, I give the file a new name. How do I see the different files ON the unit? Can I select between them? I want to be able to verify that the file loaded correctly before heading out. I've tried the owners manual PDF, looking at old posts... clearly, I'm missing something. I'm also trying to use the in unit filters - but even after we apply a filter (mainly to get rid of micros - we have a little kid and those aren't any fun for her) the micros still show up. OR, NONE of the caches appear on the unit. I'm so dissapointed in the Garmin owners manual and available resources. We got this because we lost our house in the Bastrop TX wildfire of Labor Day and we're really wanting something fun to do as a family. If anyone lives around here and knows how to do this, could we please meet you at a park so that you could give us the stressed out idiots guide tutorial? Thanks.
  2. Thank you!!!! I found that info no where else... Perfect. I now have a hope of geocaching for my birthday soon!
  3. I am not new to geocaching, but have a new Garmin GPS62s unit that I can't figure out how to get caches on to. I thought I had loaded them via gsak, but when I go to the geocaching folder on the garmin, it says that no caches are loaded. Can some one give me the dummies directions for this please? Thanks...
  4. I'm not a first time cache maker... have hid several in fact. I just placed a new one on Sunday, nothing fancy, just a standard puzzle cache... no other caches for at least a mile away... I've gotten no emails or notes on the cache log from the reviewer.... I did send a note to the contact@geocaching.com address asking what to do next... Just wondering if this is normal? I've usually gotten responses within a day. I know that these folks are all volunteer so... Thanks!
  5. Please let me know if you have one for sale or trade... I lost ours in a move and now can't find where to buy one new at. Thanks for the help!
  6. So... I should mention that a new geocacher entered the world 5 weeks ago! She doesn't have her own geocaching id yet, but will eventually. I hope. If we ever cache again... So, here's the question. Has anyone ever geocached with a tiny little cacher and are there any tricks of the trade? I've already figured out to get up at an ungodly hour so as to be out the door with the sun... cache only in the cool (I live in Alabama) and make my husband carry the diaper bag. Any other tips? I seriously am loosing my mind if we don't get out soon. We didn't cache much while I was PG due to the cold and my big belly and hubbys job being insane. I'm at the point now that if I don't do something that I did pre-tiny cacher I'm going to loose my mind. I miss my addiction! Thanks for any help!
  7. Wow, I'm slow. Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me about the gc number. Is it possible to have a cache with multiple owners? That's more what I was thinking for one of mine... If I have to, I'll adopt it out, but would prefer to just add an owner...
  8. OK, already hit a couple of snags... 1) on the new pages, where is the GC number listed for the cache? 2) if I want to add a person to the owner and remain an owner myself on it, how do I do that? (I will get back to the area periodically and this is a particularly personal and important cache to me.) Thanks!
  9. I'm moving out of state in 2 weeks too! I've found adopters for 2 of my 3 caches that are staying, still looking for a third person. No doubt I will find one, these are fairly popular caches. Thanks for the timely post on this topic!
  10. My dermatologist prescribed Zyrtec for my PI. I get it BAD. If I take a single Zyrtec pill it will make the reaction go away and it doesn't come back. I can take it up until the point that the blisters form - pre-blister bumps and it works like a charm. I've also succesfuly used Allegra and I have no reason to believe that the over the coutner drug Claritin wouldn't work as well. My reactions are so severe that I have faint scars on my arms from the rash and hubby has killed all of the PI in the neighborhood (cats would bring the oil home to me, lovely creatures). Since I found my magic pills, I havn't had a reaction in many years. I KNOW that I have been in the midst and touched the PI - I'm a botanist so trust me, I know that I've been in it. Try the pills, easy and cheap and they work!
  11. While I understand your frustration, I don't understand leaving the game over it... I am an owner of a 4 stage multi... and if you havn't done it, there's no way to know where the stages are and they are not anywhere close to the first stage. It is part of the game unfortunatly. I have solved that problem by doing all of the caches in my area... but at one point was close to putting out a cache in a great park, only to do a hard puzzle cache and found the final hide in that park! It does make me wonder if there could be some sort of pre-approval process for location only that we could implement with the reviewers so that you could verify that the area was OK to hide in before going to the effort of hiding the cache. As it stands now, we're supposed to have the cache ready to go before submitting it for approval. If we had a location pre-approval, then situations like yours wouldn't be so common.
  12. I got this unit at a garage sale for a $1. I've no idea if it works, but it looks nice and is in a leather(ish) case. There's no data card or power cord, or stylus for that matter. I'll give it away to whomever is willing to risk the price of FedEx shipping (from Texas). Thanks!
  13. AW - Part of being a parent is teaching your kids the reasons for playing by the rules and that the rules are often there for reasons that may not initially be obvious to everyone. Take this as a learning opportunity for the entire family and give it a positive spin. More family time together, another chance to be out in the park as a family, a chance to improve the hide and make it harder for the other cachers to find, a brief lesson on playing well with others... Your family sounds lovely and you are very lucky that they are willing to go out there with you! I could only wish that my father would have spent as much quality time with me when I was little. First hides are always hard - but anything worth doing is rarely easy. It is part of the fun of caching - knowing that the real reason you're out hiking around looking for a box in the woods has nothing to do with the contents of the box and everything to do with journey to find it. Enjoy the journey, both to the caches that you find and to placing your first cache. I know that in the end, you'll be like the rest of us, fondly remembering the time it took to get there. Have fun!
  14. I voted... but I think that this pole is only for the people who go onto the forums... my mom and sister both cache, but will never see this poll simply because they don't know how (or why) to do the forum thing. Still, I think the results are representative of what I've seen at events... even in a college town.
  15. I don't care about the numbers. Really, I don't. What I do care about is looking back through my old logs and remembering the caches that I have found and what fun I had doing it and who's found them recently. Today, I figured that my count total should be over x ammount... and after logging my new finds, I realized that it was at least 10-15 finds lower than I remember it being! Is there any way to tell which of my logs have been deleted? Do I get a notice if they're deleted? I swear, I only log the caches that I have actually found and don't do anything against the rules... seriously, hubby and I are very boring people. I really doubt if there was any valid reason for my logs to be deleted... Thoughts? Helps?
  16. Aside from not having as much time as anticipated for caching this weekend, the PQs that I requested did all come through... just after I left. =) Not that big of deal, we found some fun caches anyways. Thanks, Jeremy, for checking into this and for working on the download off of the website option! I'm sure that will help on the server strain... Though, a question regarding this improvment. Will we still have the option of receiving the queries by email, like for scheduled weekly pqs? I hope that everyone had a great weekend caching!
  17. Well, as of now, I have recieved 3/5 pq that I requested, but of course, not the 2 that I really wanted. Oh well, I printed 18 caches out... most of which are non-micros and in parks since we'll be taking the Monster dog. This is the first problem that I've had, but I agree it is frustrating. I think I'm moving my automatic pq request up a couple of days so that I have a greater chance of getting them next week. Hope that TPTB figure this out soon...
  18. I did finally get the email I sent to myself through Groundspeak. But, sadness, no pq yet. Also, no emails saying that there have been replies to my posts on the forums, either. I havn't been out caching in a long time, the holidays have been really busy for us (and a job interview for Wile E. too)... we were looking forward to getting out and releasing a couple of new bugs. Looks like I'll be printing off the caches before leaving work. Oh well, back to the days before I was a premium member!
  19. The pocket queries were generated almost an hour ago, yet they havn't arrived in my email yet. I also sent a test email through gc off of my profile page, and that hasn't arrived yet, either. Email sent to my address is arriving, so it is not my email provider (google). We're wanting to go out caching this weekend and are leaving in a few hours. Any ideas of what is going on? Thanks!
  20. Garage sales are the best. I often get new or barely used items for a quarter each. That tends to be what I spend on swag, though it is nice stuff. Last weekend, I got a new pack of staionery for a quarter. It will go into a waterproof cache. It varies every week... sometimes I score, other times... As far as making things, I frequent a local bar/laundromat (makes doing laundry so much more fun!) and am friends with the owner and bar keeps. They are saving a weeks worth of beer caps for me. Plan on gluing magnets into those (the unique caps at least, no coors or bud...) Am doing the same with wine corks, those as I am cheap, I don't hang out around places that go through a lot of different types of wine. I don't like to buy new as I don't want to add more stuff to the earth... and I'm cheap. Garage sales and crafts are great!
  21. There's one where I work that I just won't go find. The owner is a cacher who in over 5 years as a member of this site, has logged less than 20 caches. He states in the cache description that he watches the cache via a webcam, supposedly to keep the maintance folks from taking the film canister. He has a less than warm fuzzy attitude (on the cache description and on his personal info page) and personally, the camera thing just creeps me out. It'd be one thing if it was a web cam for security reasons, but a personal one?... ick. There's another one nearby that has never been found, and this is an area with a few FTF hounds. A couple of people have attempted it (not me) but either couldn't find or wouldnt' find it. The owner doesn't have many finds either (one of the finds is the creepy cache) and there are a few local cachers who wonder if he is a sock puppet account of the creepy guy. I really really hate micros in the woods. The last one I found I asked in the post why a full size cache wasn't placed there, it was the perfect spot. Unless the micro is really clever (I've hidden one like that myself) then I'm just not interested in finding another bison tube hanging off of a branch or down a hole in a tree. I do wish that there was some level maintance by GC on caches... Some of the icky ones that I posted a SBA on seem to be owned by cachers that have long since left the game. I dunno, maybe an annual check in, are you still wanting to keep the cache out there kinda email? I just hate going to find caches that are full of mold or aren't being maintaned anymore. Those really are my least favorite of all really.
  22. So, issue nearly solved... I had the brainiac idea of contacting the person who grabbed out of the cache (the one in AZ) and asking her not to place hers out - even offered to mail her a new bug of mine to release into its first cache as a trade... She declined the offer but did agree not to place the bug in question. I've asked her to put the bug back in the cache that I had it in... the mileage will be very screwy for sure, but at least it's back out and running. Thanks for the help, wish I'd have thought of this solution at 5 am this morning!
  23. I had a TB of Tommy Trojans that I placed in a cache in TX last weekend. The TB is Rozz Rocks TBJ05P and I found it in a cache in KS over Thanksgiving. It wasn't listed in that cache but stranger things have happened... So, I was checking on caches I'd recently found and noticed that the TB wasn't in the cache I'd placed it in. Curious, I checked the log and a new cacher in AZ found it in a cache out there and grabbed it! Noticing that it had been "lost" and then reissued back in May, I realized that the "lost" TB (I think the one that I found, the word "copy" isn't on the tag) had resurfaced and that there are now 2 copies with the same TB # on them floating around the country. I tried emailing Tommy, but apparently his geocide included closing the email address that is connected with his account and the email was returned to me. So, what's a cacher to do? I have a bunch of new tags coming in soon (I hope!) and would be willing to put one on this guy and let him loose out here again... Thanks for any help that TPTB are able to give.
  24. I have the 600 and struggled with different software for a long time... I finally gave in and used the software that came with the unit. It quickly puts the coordinates into the unit (just remember the 200 cache/file limit!) - but it does't do anything else. I use GPSonar for the hints/description on my PPC and the combo works well for what I need/want it to do. Plus, it's all free (or you already own it). It's not a cache manager so don't confuse it with GSAK... but it is easier to use (at least to me) and most importantly, it does work. It changed how we cache and resulted in finding more caches in different places without having to print out and input manually a thousand different caches. Good luck!
  25. So, I hate to bring up a sore topic, but in the quest for knowledge... what are the issues with cemeteries in SC and Tennesee? Sorrry, but just hadn't heard about that before. Here in TX, at least my part of TX, there's not a lot of geographically interesting areas... so we end up with quite a few cemetery caches. I have no problem with them in theory, but tend to get bored as most are micros and don't lead me to anything interesting (usually)... That said, they were a great break from driving during our Thanksgiving trip and even brought us to one of the graves of Billy the Kid! I'm indifferent to the attribute thing... I've found a few good caches in cemeteries and I've found some miserable ones... So, I really don't think I would use an attribute to filter them out or seek them out either. But, there are sure to be history buffs who would love to find some hidden places... I could see it go either way really. If TPTB were interested, they could do a trial run in maybe one specific state and see how much it was used/abused... whatever.
