  1. I just take home some nalgene cryotubes from the lab.
  2. I adopted a tupperware cache that sat right in the runoff zone for a large WV hill. This cache had been moldy/wet for months and months and muggled repeatedly. I replaced it with an ammo can and relocated it about 30 feet away, better hidden and out of the runoff. It's been nice and dry and muggle free since (admittedly, only 2 months so far). But I didn't change the name or anything. Since it was a new container in a new spot I invited previous finders back. I felt that the move was warranted because of muggle/water issues, but this had been a very popular cache and I didn't want to archive/hide a new one, just give the "oldie but goodie" a little TLC and updating.
  3. Wow. What a hate-filled, vitriolic reply. I got a 72 hour vacation and my comments deleted in the scouting TB thread, and I didn't even call anybody names.
  4. I recently thought of using a nalgene cryotube (I use these for multi-stages) only gorilla gluing the cap on. You would be unable to open the cache.
  5. As the OP I feel the need to respond to several references to not "needing" a gun in bear country. To each his own. Of course lots of people hike without a gun and are just fine. I have never drawn my revolver on a bear (and hope I never do). In fact, the only bear I have ever killed was with a bow and arrow during bear season. But I like to carry in the woods. Just a little insurance. As for my ability to draw quickly when I need to, that's what practice and range time is for. I'll take my chances drawing in time over having nothing. I expect I'm more likely to need my revolver to fend off a feral dog than a bear... but for the sake of posting in a mixed forum I thought that would explain my carry motives better than "to shoot wild dogs". WB (who has never drawn his weapon for defense, but is ready if he ever needs to).
  6. Mmmmmm. Sushi. I haven't been for sushi in months. Now I have a craving. Thanks a lot. LOL
  7. Just wanted to say thank you to everybody for their input and advice. I got my PDA this afternoon and downloaded cachemate, and imported my 60-mile geocache database. Looks like I'm off and running. I will play with it and explore the various utilities such as logging aids/etc. Looks like a powerful little program. $8 well spent. Thanks again, everyone!
  8. That's the beauty of being a law-abiding citizen with a CHL. Doesn't matter how "suspicious" you are, you are still within your rights. I have been stopped by police once while legally carrying. The officer was very polite, asked if he could have the weapon while we talked, then returned the weapon to me (along with a warning to slow down). The whole thing couldn't have gone more smoothly.
  9. Yes, my tentative plans are to hold it at Cooper's rock in the spring. LOL! Actually, I would have to schedule it around turkey season (as I shall be using my GPS for other things...) so probably after the last week of may. I'd rent out one of the big pavilions, and make up a bunch of BBQ, burgers and dogs. Having never hosted one of these before, I'll need some help in the planning/execution. Is it bad form to ask for a donation to cover supplies? I know the pavilions rent for about $100 a day, and if I make up 30 lbs of BBQ, it'll cost about $100 in meat/wood. Would asking folks to kick in something in the $5-10 range be out of line? There are 4 caches IN cooper's rock SF, and then there are about 60 or so right around Morgantown, so there's plenty of caching to be done (except for me... I've found 'em all. LOL!)

  11. Love my Sportrak map. Will I upgrade eventually to something better? Sure. Anytime soon? No.
  12. I've tried it. I DNF'ed it. Wandering Bears could not have a more appropriate descprition. I placed (GCT99N) GeoBacon in response. Wandering Bears found it - check his reply to me in his log. He has placed several in the area and they're all fun finds! We're definitely glad he's out there. Awww, shucks. Thanks. The cache is there, I promise. LOL! And I even added a hint! The hint is a bit cryptic, but if you don't take it at face value you ought to be able to find it pretty easily.

  14. Keystone, I didn't know you used those... I've deleted it off of one or two of my caches and left it on the rest. I'll leave them in the future... I was just trying to "tidy up" as you said. No biggie for me, and if it's a courtesy to the reviewer I'll be happy to leave it.
  15. Got a Palm VIIX (factory refurb) plus all the goodies (docking station, leather wallet, etc) for $25. Will update when I get 'er up and running, or come back crying for help when it doesn't work... LOL. Thanks again for your help. I wouldn't have thought I could do it this cheaply... that's why I hadn't even bothered looking yet.
  16. Quote from the web site "Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery" OUCH!
  17. my home is gmail. LOL. webmail is blocked by the firewall here at the lab. I'll set up a rule tonight.
  18. yeah, I've thought about that. That's probably what I'll end up doing...
  19. Cool. I appreciate the responses. I think I know enough to jump in now. I've found an 8MB Palm VIIx for $20 NIB on ebay...
  20. Thanks for the input so far. Is the size of the memory an issue with pocket queries? How much do I need? Also, I assume that I don't need wireless connectivity and that I can just interface thru my pc...
  21. Would it be possible to associate multiple email accounts with our geocaching account? I ask, because I cannot access my home email from work, and vice versa. Therefore, I can only get geocaching-related emails at home. Is there a way to associate two emails with our notification set up? Thanks, and sorry if this has been asked before.
  22. I thought I would start a new thread, rather than hijack the current thread on this. I'm a pretty tech-savvy guy, but I have never used a PDA and it is one technology with which I'm unfamiliar. I don't know the different manufacturers/OS/etc. Since I have heretofore managed to function professionally without one, I don't need the newest fanciest PDA, but I want one that I can run cachemate on and go paperless. I browsed ebay for some cheap used PDAs, but it's a little overwhelming not knowing which ones I need... I know cachemate needs Palm OS 3+, but most of these auctions don't list the OS. So I guess I just need a little help finding a nice cheap setup that I can get my feet wet with. Also, I know that Target, etc. carry some reasonably cheap PDAs by Panasonic etc... Does anybody know if these el cheapo PDAs will run cachemate? thanks for your help.
