  1. From what I am reading it is a problem in every area. I think they key is to try to release a few and see what happens. We have one we are sure is lost. I know a guy in our area is "holding" hundreds of TB. I am not sure why, or how, but I leave it be. If we are afraid of releasing them, the tb thieves win.
  2. I found out how viscous they are a few years ago. We were hiking near a pond and they had a nest near the trail. My little one was smaller than a swan, i think it was her first on the ground hike. I am the first person to protect wildlife, but I almost killed it with my bare hands when it went after the kid. I grabbed my daughter and ran, leaving my confused husband alone on the trail with two angry swans. Since we started geocaching this spring we have learned a ton about wildlife. Red wing blackbirds go right for your head. That is the only reason I wear a hat caching. It gives me some protection. Edited due to auto complete.
  3. Good evening, next week the family and I are traveling down south. We were going to hit the maze in Nashville, and do some touristy stuff. Our other stops are Dayton, Louisville and Mammoth Caves NP. Any caches we need to hit?!We love unique containers, short hikes(we are brining our bug repellent clothes and gear), and of course the kid loves bugs and trading swag. I have been trying to research by favorites, but I am open to suggestions. Also, any tips on caching down there would be nice. Different bugs or etiquette? Thanks in advance.
  4. I agree with the people who said go to an event. I felt very similar at first, but nce I met local cachers I felt better. Most are just playing a game and want everyone to have fun. It takes all kinds, and geocaching is no different. I love the events, and wish we could go to more, but my husband feels left out, since they all happen while he is working.
  5. Honestly, this is a game, and they are always going to be spoiled sports. It looks like the cache doesn't have a FTF yet. Do I think people would do it for an FTF, yeah, some people might. Live and learn I guess. Sorry to hear about the trees.
  6. Ok, thanks. Once we saw someone finding a cache and didn't go back, my dh didn't want to claim it because it was too easy. We recently found out our niece is friends with a local COs daughter. He knows where all of the locals are, I feel weird taking help. We never went back and found the one he told us about. It feels a little like cheating.
  7. There its a popular cache near my work, but the difficulty is a four. I have noticed lots of people saying they got help in the logs. What does that mean?
  8. The rain has been awful in Michigan, so the mosquitoes are horrible. We have forgotten to apply bug repellant twice, in think we are done forgetting. What kind do you use? On top of welts from numerous mosquito bites my little one picked up a tick today. My husband seems to think there is little you can do to avoid ticks. I think her repellant might have worked, because it didn't actually bite her, it just crawled around her pants for a while, probably ten minutes or so between where we were caching and the next stop.
  9. I didn't log that I dropped a TB before an event, and someone grabbed him from me. I also dropped one at a nearby cahce and that one was grabbed. How do I get these two TB logged as having at least visted the event and the cache? I normally take a pic that I don't publich the with TB number when I pic it up. Apparently I was proactive and deleted both of these pics. Can I e-mail the people who currently have them and ask for the code so I can log the drop?
  10. Can't he just go to the page for each one and grab them from her if he actually has them in hand?
  11. I am not stealthy at all. I have tried this one by my work numerous times that is in a dogwood hedge. It is also right next to a daycare. I often look for it at lunch, and I am sure someone from my company will drive past me staring at these bushes or digging in them someday. Though I rarely notice anything when I am driving. Prior to geocaching ourselves, we only noticed cachers twice, and we hike and camp a fair amount. Of course, both were large groups, probably events or education groups, so they weren't stealthy. I am scared of the ones at people's houses. I avoid them.
  12. Maybe you could get a coin or gem to dip and track your miles. I agree with the poster who said whoever finds the most gets to pick lunch. I try to get my daughter excited ahead of time. We are only 25 in, but I also try to split between micros and bigger ones each day. She isn't big into swag though, mainly because in Michigan we have been finding some seriously water logged caches lately. I am hoping that taking her to an event later this month will get her more excited, not that she isn't now, I have heard this complaint before though. I also make sure to tell people often that she found our hardest one to date.
  13. The rampant loss of TB was frustrating me at first, then I realized how easy you can get in over your head with these. My daughter loves finding them, but getting rid of them is easier said than done. Sometimes we end up cacheing on the fly and they aren't with us, then we end up at a bunch of little ones when we have them. I also worry a lot about the caches I place them in, because it seems like some people watch certain caches, and pick them up, at least by us. I also know, since it is my daughter that loves the TB how easy it is to misplace them. I try to have a place in the house where they go, but then of course we forget to take them cacheing. I am thinking if I place five out there in various caches, one should take. It is frustrating, but I really like the Blorenges suggestion. From someone who spent an unplanned week in the hospital recently and loves TBs, stuff happens, you don't know what is up with these people. I have the best of intentions anytime I pick up a TB, and I trust other caches to do the same.
  14. Thanks, I was definitely leaning in that direction. Of course the issue is, the Vista is at a store much further away. I could talk my husband into going to the store that is twenty minutes away, the 45 minutes away store is a tougher sell. I am looking at the shipping options now.
  15. Good Morning- A local shop has these two units on sale this weekend, the venture for $100 and the Vista for $150. Currently we are using our phones(Droid X and iPhone 4). Both work okay, but the battery life is poor. We also want to get our 1st grader into using maps and compasses. We are not going to let her touch our expensive non-waterproof phones while caching. I notice these are both weatherproof. How likely is that to make it through being dropped in a puddle? Thanks in advance for your help. Edited because I was thinking one thing and typing another.
  16. I am really stressed about placing it. 1. None of the caches that say they have bugs in my area actually have any, so I worry about it getting "lost" 2. My home is 30 miles farther from the detination then I found it. We were so excited to find it, I wasn't concerned about the goal. I just took it. I will not make that mistake again. 3. I have a couple situations that might get the bug closer to its destination, but both are months away, I am thinking it is better to get it moving then worry about strategy. What is the best strategy here, place it and hope no one pockets it? Wait and place it closer when I can?
  17. Both my droid and my husbands iPhone were pretty jumpy this weekend. We had luck, but both had dead phones after fives caches. Will be ordering a gps soon.
  18. Think outside the box, but don't damage anything. I tried to use hints and photos at the first few. Stick to traditional caches with a difficulty of 1 if you can. It is a lot of fun, once you find one you will start to get what you are looking for. Read descriptions, small containers are often hard to find. Nothing puts you right in the spot. Kids are awesome at this, but they have to get used to looking.
  19. Our very first cache was right on, since then it has been a few feet off. I wouldn't place with an iPhone 4G, just because I read that you shouldn't in the reviews.
  20. I have only logged a few finds and two contained business cards. I wouldn't be upset, and it puts an extra trackable out there, which I wouldn't mind, since we are always hoping for trackables.
  21. I am with you on enjoying the area. I was starting to get competitive, but I think I need to define what this is about for me.
  22. We weren't sure we'd like geocaching, so we paid the ten bucks for the app for my husbands iPhone 4. We have been having fun, but will be ordering a GPS unit soon. It works pretty well, but I think it is cheating a bit. We have Verizon, so our service is pretty consistent. I am not sure how well this would work if we were looking for less urban caches.
